Earthquakes in various places

"The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke; by his power he churned up the sea" (Job).

"The waves of death swirled about me...  The valleys of the sea were exposed, and the foundations of the Earth were laid bare" (David).

"Your wrath lies heavily upon me; You have overwhelmed me with all your waves" (Jonah).

These biblical men of faith were quoted by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in an article published in the Times of London on January 1st, 2005 - in response to the great Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that caused the injury and death of tens of thousands if people in the closing days of 2004. Sacks asked the question "why does God permit a tragedy such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami? Why does he allow the innocent to suffer and the guiltless to die?"

There are some who believe that events like this one must happen before the final days of history come to a close.

One of the "signs of the end" predicted by Jesus in his Olivet Discourse of Matthew 24 was "earthquakes in various places." If it can be proved that the earthquakes are indeed increasing, say the literalist Bible scholars, it will indicated that we are living in the "end time" - prior to the battle of Armageddon.

Hal Lindsey, in his book 'Apocalypse Code', claims, without giving any specific data - that earthquakes in the 20th century "killed more than 2 million people - or half the toll of all natural catastrophes out together! But it's going to get much worse."

A problem exists in deciding what constitutes 'increased earthquake activity'. Do we go by the Richter scale, which measures severity. Do we count frequency? Or do we simply add up the death toll? An Armenian earthquake in 1988 killed more than 25,000 people, but on the Richter scale, was less severe than a 1991 quake in Soviet Georgia that killed only a few hundred people. The Strongest earthquake on record occured in Chile in 1960 but only killed some 10,000 people, in 10,000 people can be labeled "only". Although there were no instruments available to measure it, a quake in China in 1556 killed an estimated 830,000 people - making it by far the most deadly such event on record. There is no report of its producing an "end of the world" hysteria, but probably not many of those who survived has read the gospel of Matthew.

The tragedy dubbed the Great American Earthquake is the one that occurred in San Fransisco in 1906, although it couldn't hold a candle to the Good Friday quake in Alaska that resulted in far fewer deaths while measuring much stronger on the Richter scale. Meanwhile, for sheer marketing appeal, it's hard to beat the only earthquake ever to have been broadcast live on television during prime time. It struck the Bay area during the 1989 world series - which ironically pitted the teams of San Fransisco and Oakland. The series was postponed for 9 days.

People in California regularly talk about the quake they call the "big one". That's the monster earthquake most people think is coming soon... of course, no one knows when. Some claim that Las Vegas gamblers have established a secret betting line that involves both magnitude and date of the occurrence, but no one seems to be able to confirm the fact.

Has Jesus' prediction of "earthquakes in various places" come to pass? The question to this answer, as with so many other endtime predictions, is up for grabs.
