Many typhoons have already battered the Philippines this year, and another two struck last week. Typhoon Nesat made landfall on Tuesday, bringing torrential rain and winds of up to 120mph to Luzon. Cabanatuan received 189mm of rainfall in just 24 hours with surrounding areas receiving similar amounts. Around 50 people were killed and 35 are still missing.

Official reports stated that more than one million people in Luzon were still trapped by flooding caused by Nesat. Before residents had a chance to recover, super typhoon Nalgae struck the Philippines on Saturday. Nalgae brought 150mph winds, and 365mm of rainfall fell on Deat in the 24 hours ending at 7am local time.

On the other side of the world Bermuda braced itself for the arrival of hurricane Ophelia, the Atlantic season's fourth hurricane. Ophelia strengthened to a category 4 storm as it passed to the east of the island, bringing downpours, thunderstorms and high surf. [GUARDIAN]

Meanwhile, through the last week, France and much of northern Spain were experiencing a heat wave, as high pressure over Germany led to a warm southerly wind across western Europe. The average maximum temperature in Bordeaux, France, is 23C for September, but on Wednesday last week the temperature rose to 31.2C. Similarly, Bilbao in northern Spain has an average maximum temperature of 24C for September, but reached 30.1C on Wednesday.
