BSc = 3 years of university
undergraduate Biology. ( I've EARNED a BSc in Biology from McMaster
University 1988-1991 )

Major = 4 years of university undergraduate Biology. This is different from a BSc in that it involves one extra year
along with writing a thesis paper based on a minor amount of research.
( My wife has EARNED a Biology Major from McMaster University 1988-1992 )

Masters = 2 years of
university graduate Biology AFTER having completed a 4-year Major.
This involves a combination of attending advanced Biology lectures,
performing teaching assistant duties for undergraduate students,
supervising laboratory sessions for undergraduate Biology courses,
and performing in-depth research and laboratory work towards
writing a thesis paper. ( My wife has EARNED a Masters of Biology
from Brock University 1992-1994 )

PhD = 4 years of
university graduate Biology AFTER having completed a 4-year Major
AND a 2-year Masters. This involves a combination of attending even
MORE advanced Biology lectures, performing teaching assistant duties
for undergraduate students, supervising laboratory sessions for
undergraduate Biology courses, performing EXTENSIVE in-depth
research and laboratory work towards writing a thesis.
This thesis is NOT just a "paper". It is usually a BOOK.
My wife's PhD thesis was over 200 pages long and was
produced into a hardbound volume that was subsequently placed in
the university science library. At this point, your thesis is NOT simply
granted. Your thesis is INTENSELY scrutinized by a panel of PROFESSORS
who already have PhD's themselves and they have tenure at the university
that they are employed at. You are then required to attend a live defense
of your thesis in front of a panel of 3 of these professors who have already
scrutinized your thesis. This session is usually a few hours long and involves
many detailed and difficult questions from the professors. If, after this
extensive process, your thesis is deemed valid and proper, then it will be
accepted by the university and you will be awarded your PhD.
If your thesis is crap ( eg - somebody laughably tries to pass of
Intelligent Design as "science" ), then your thesis will be rejected and
you will NOT be awarded your PhD. If you are awarded your PhD, then
often your thesis "paper" will be summarized and published in a legitimate
peer-reviewed science journal, but ONLY after it has been peer-reviewed
by whatever journal accepts to publish the paper. At this point, your 4-year
thesis research results are accepted by the scientific community as a whole.
( My wife has EARNED a PhD in Biology jointly from McMaster University
and Queen's University 1994-1998 )

Post-Graduate Degree =
There are a variety of different degrees other than a Masters or a PhD that
one can get after 3 or 4 years of undergraduate university, such as
MD or DDS ( physician and dentist respectively ). I completed 3 years of
undergraduate Biology at McMaster University and was fully prepared to
simply finish a fourth year and obtain my Major degree. On a lark, I applied
to the Optometry School at the University of Waterloo to see if I could get
accepted early. To my surprise, I did get accepted early and subsequently
decided to forego my fourth year of Biology, settle for a 3-year BSc instead
of a Major, and jumped right into Optometry School. In the course of
obtaining an OD ( a degree of Optometry ), I had to attend 4 more years
of extensive didactic and clinical training in ocular AND general diseases,
lens optics and light physics. ( I've EARNED an OD from the University
of Waterloo 1991-1995 )

10 = years of university Biology Mrs.B.Nye has attended.
7 = years of university Biology B.Nye has attended.
4 = years of university Biology Jobe Maritin has attended.
0 = years of university Biology Niteblade has attended.

One of my faves was by Laz., but I cannot recall it, and He must of know how hilarious it was, because he deleted it from his post, shortly afterwards. It was once when he got justifiably pissed off at me, but he totally lost control and lost all good sense while fuming at me. I had in it my sig. for awhile. I may have it archived. Dang, I need to keep a collection of these.
