To be brief, thread probably been done before, a simple refresh of the topic so:
What are your 10 favourite movies?
Can be in ranked order or just casually listed as some films you like.
Films to me reflect who the viewer is, if you know what I mean. SHOOT!

okay, my own personal favorite..some of these you may not have even heard of, but I will watch them over and over again
the color purple
loose cannons
revenge of the nerds
it's a wonderful life
casablanca
robin williams live on broadway (hell, any robin williams, he makes me laugh, and that is a rare and precious commodity to me these days)
mr. destiny
the 10th kingdom
the stand
second sight ( a real sleeper of a movie but great comedy with bronson pinchot and john laroquette)
EDIT: these are far from what I think are the best movies of all time by any means, just my personal favorites, and before I put these down I deliberately didn't look at any other responses. OH and I forgot another that I can watch over and over again..the Muppet Movie. Yes, I said it, don't look at me that way!
SECOND EDIT: see, now that I looked at other responses I realize that I left out Blazing Saddles..(Monty Python and the Holy grail reminded me of it, because I like that movie and would put it in a top twenty but much prefer Mel Brooks works personally, but that is just me)

Weird huh? I guess I never thought of all the different kinds of movies I do like. but I also like 1984 most classic black and white scary movies, the blob and such. My great uncle was in a lot of those kinds of movies. Last Picture Show was good. I could go on and on. I really like classics more than those made today. If I had to pick one recently that I like it would be Dodgeball. heehee

Brown people!!!!
Thats like remaking star wars without the empire. Or, planet of the apes with the apes replaced for gerbils. Or ET with the other kind of alien. Or Blackadder without baldric.
Seriously, don't they have any idea of the historical and political significance of that movie.
Hollywood has really gone downhill last years.

Hollywood has really gone downhill last years.and it's all due to being politically correct.

Why not Russia? It isn't unrealistic to believe that they could emerge victorious after this financial crisis. :dunno:
I thought Body of Lies did a decent job with the whole "Brown people" situation. There really wasn't a villain at all in that movie, except maybe Russel Crow's character. It even had an "inside job" by the Americans.

Mar 14th, 2009, 9:18 AM
if they decide to remake Red Dawn with a Sino-Asian enemy then they only need to steal from the book, "The Sixth Column" by Robert A. Heinlein (written in the late 1950's) about the invasion of the USA by China, et al.
movies such because people forgot that all the flashy graphics and cheesecake in the world will not make a movie compelling, a Good Story does that.
The Empire Strikes Back had a compelling story - every Star Wars movie after that, not so much (I mean, rebel Ewoks ... give me a fucking break).
back in the 1990's a few media types hit big by being 'young and irreverent' and so the industry turned to the young and irreverent and tossed out the middle aged, experienced writers in favour of the new 'youth paradigm.'
this is why every single comedy is trying to achieve the same level of sophistication as Porky's.
the writers with the good ideas are hidden away, or working on HBO series.
but this too will change once the next twenty huge CGI blockbusters flop due to lack of interest. Hollywood is notorious for working off their inertia as much as for being slaves to the lowest common denominator.
I already listed my fave films earlier ...
lycanox
Mar 14th, 2009, 9:57 AM
and it's all due to being politically correct.
Actually no, it has more to do with lazy writers.
Just look at the stuff that Hollywood has brought over the past few years. Its either a ripoff from a (comic) book. An attempt to make another movies on one old series like rocky. Or some kind of predictable drivel.
It has all become about making a few bucks with unoriginal ideas. No wonder Bollywood won the best film award.

Er, in no particular order:
*Shaun of the Dead (this movie is so clever and genius that it has to rank near the top. and if you liked the series Spaced, you'll love this)
*Independence Day (this was a true blockbuster, in the sense that the word seems to imply. Amazing film, IMHO. Has a nice end of the world vibe to it)
*The Matrix (fuck ya'll. this whole trilogy rocked)
*LOTR (so did this one)
*28 Days Later (wow. Just wow. This movie had a take on "zombies" well, the infected, that was so awesome and different)
*28 Weeks Later (greatest "zombie" chase seen of all time in the first scene. Wow)
* The Dark Knight (best villain of all time, except maybe Agent Smith. It's a close one)
* American Beauty (f'ing hilarious. Absolutely genius. Watch this film! The way the main character tells off and black mails his boss... when a movie has the line "That's right, I was choking the bishop, chafing the carrot, you know, saying "hi" to my monster! " when his wife catches him masturbating, how can you NOT want to see this film?)
* Fight Club (when a movie has the line "Fuck Martha Stewart" and "Bob has bitch tits" you know it's good...the movie says a lot about our modern day consumerism, our dependence upon today's modern conveniences and what it does to our souls. Plus Rosie hated it, which makes it great in my book! :w00t:)
*The Last Samurai (yeah, Tom Cruise... lame, but the era has always fascinated me, the struggle between tradition and change, and even if it was a tad bit unrealistic and historically inaccurate. As far as I am aware, this is the only big time American movie that deals with the conflict in Japan during that era. The actor who plays the character based upon Saigo Takamori is genius (Ken Wanatabe), although clearly the film doesn't realistically portray the corruption of the samurai class- but why would it? That wasn't the point)
Ken Wanatabe: You don't want to fuck with him...

Hollywood has some great ideas. Ever see the Saw Movies? Masterpieces in horror and torture! Afro Samurai movie was great also. Although I guess that's not Hollywood lol. Hmm, I loved 300, that's pretty recent and Hollywood. And some times a remake can be better, or as good, Friday the 13th remake I thought was almost as good if not equal to the original. I mean come on it had a twist beginning!
But yeah Red Dawn was perfect as it is. Any changes, no matter how small, will fuck it up. Especially since todays child stars are the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus. So you know its going to suck.

That wasn't the point)
Ken Wanatabe: You don't want to fuck with him...

the novel Shogun is more accurate in it's portrayal of medieval Japanese politics but I have a grudging 'like' of this movie, Tom Cruise notwithstanding.
but The Matrix is a HUGE RIP OFF. the Wachowski Brothers ended up being sued and losing to the Black Woman who Authoured the original stories. since you spoke in another thread about Copyright and the whole 'Pay The Artist' thing (I think it was internet file sharing which was at issue) I will put it to you, How can you Like a movie based on Stealing Another Person's Intellectual Property for Personal Gain?
I mean, if some kid downloading songs off the Internet is enough for you to cast moral judgement, I'm surprised you haven't 'revised' your take on this trilogy based on the fact it was a Stolen Child - it was something conceived from outright, conscious theft and it made the Wachowski's millions upon milions.
and if that wasn't enough - you mean to tell me that you Liked the whole 'Kiss of Life' thing at the end of the first movie? when I first saw it that was the scene that made me Hate the film - and I stood my ground for years against all turmoil until the Copyright Infringement Case was brought to light. sort of like being the only person in my clique who didn't like Seinfeld - but time has validated me in both cases :afro:

Uki... I remember watching V as a kid on the old TV with wabbit ears. That was a good miniseries, but I remember the TV series that ran for a season really sucked.
You should catch the reviews for a new updated version of V...giving it the same new look and treatment they gave Star Trek. It's supposed to be a midseason replacement. I thought the original miniseries was well done, and hope they do a decent job of it.

What does whether or not it was stolen have to do with the fact that it was a good movie and a good story (IMHO).
I like good stolen music too!

Yeah, that was pretty epically gay, no doubt. But it's the other stuff. No movie is perfect (except Primer).
BTW- did I list Tokyo Zombie on my top ten? Because that movie is EPIC.

Er, in no particular order:
*Shaun of the Dead (this movie is so clever and genius that it has to rank near the top. and if you liked the series Spaced, you'll love this)
A modern classic! And genius for the fact that it's true to what british people would do in such an event: Not notice it for a week and then go down the pub until it blows over.

No movie is perfect (except Primer).
so Citizen Kane, The Grand Illusion, Seahawk, Ran, Henry V (Kenneth Branagh's version) and Johnny Got His Gun aren't perfect ...
hmm ... I guess it is All subjective ...
