Okay, I've heard of the name before (I think in an Ozzy song) but I never had an inclination to research the person. From what I've gathered on several pro and con websites on the guy is this. He's a fraud, and a cult leader. Fancied himself as some sort of Sorcerer and magician. He also involved a lot of ancient egyptian gods into his pseudo religion. The whole philosophy of Thelema is contrary.
Most Thelemites hold that every person possesses a True Will, a single overall motivation for their existence. The Law of Thelema mandates that each person follow their True Will to attain fulfillment in life and freedom from restriction of their nature. Because no two True Wills can be in real conflict (according to "Every man and every woman is a star"), this Law also prohibits one from interfering with the True Will of any other person.
There is no way you can exercise "Total Free Will" without coming into conflict with another person. This ideaology is closer to Anarchy but they attempt to temper it with that little soundbite "this Law also prohibits one from interfering with the True Will of any other person". Its garbage and he was nothing but a cult leader; possibly a borderline Satanist. IMHO:smokin:

Hey two socks..I don't know if you opened this topic to ridicule people or because you genuinly want to talk Crowley.-Either way, here is some good info..
The thing that first comes to mind when i think of Crowley is this..While meditating at the great Pyramids of EGYPT, Crowley claims that the god THOTH visited him and told him that he was to become the BEAST..That his number was 666 and that his true name was HORUS.-He was an extreme "sexual" magician and in his day was noted as "the wickedest man on earth."-Another title that he went by was that of BAPHOMET, the main goat headed god of the KNIGHTS TEMPLARS.
Crowley was also a world class mountain climber and held many records.
This is from the great book THE OCCULT CONSPIRACY by Michael Howard.
Several well known occultists played a role in the psychic opposition to Hitler and the Nazis, including the controversial magician Aleister Crowley. His activities extended from acting as a spy in pre-war Berlin to playing a part in the 1941 peace mission by Rudolf Hess. Crowley however had displayed a distinct lack of patriotism in the First World War when he actively supported the Kaiser. He was living in Switzerland when the war began and had offered his services to the British government but they refused to have anything to do with him. In October 1914 Crowley sailed to New York, and in 1915 he became interested in German nationalism. A chance meeting on an omnibus with a mysterious Irashman named O'Brien led Crowley to denounce his British citizenship, tiear up his passport and call on the Irish people to support Germany by rising up against their English oppressors.-While living in the United States Crowley wrote pro-German propaganda for two right wing publications called The Fatherland and The Internationalist. He later claimed that he carried out this work as an agent for M16(the British secret service) and had been working for the Allied cause. The Secret Service denied all knowledge of this arrangement and denounced him as a "small time traitor" who acted from a desire for self advertisement rather than treason. However, as a result of this condemnation, the police did raid his occult temple in London and seized numerous documents and magical regalia.--After the war it was suggested that Crowley should be prosecuted but he seems to have persuaded the authorities that he was trying to help the Allies by writing tongue in cheek articles which in fact ridiculed the Germans.Crowley offered his services as an agent to M16 after informing them that the head of the OTO,(Order Templi Orientis) which he had joined in 1912, was a German Intelligence officer. In the 20's and 30's Crowley worked on an informal basis for M16 supplying them with information about the European Communist movement and the links between the German nationalist groups, occult fraternities and the Nazis. It is possible that Crowley's employment by the British Secret Service was well known to the Germans. While he was living in Berlin the bisexual magician shared a home with an Englishman who was a German agent.
It then goes on to say that Crowley was connected to many other Secret Society groups including the Brotherhood of Saturn and the Order of the Golden Dawn.-James Bond writer Ian Fleming, who was also a naval officer and society member, was close friends with Aleister Crowley-Many famous writers and occultist from this time and connection also include Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and others..
Prominent 60's youth and drug activist Timothy Leary claimed that he was continuing in the work of Aleister Crowley.]
He was a "founder" of the "new age" movement and author of many books..Most famous among them is THE BOOK OF LIES.
His motto was "Do as thou wilt."
This is only a little bit of the relevant Crow info..THere is a facinating theory going around some sites on the NET that claims connections between SEPT 11th and Crowley death date, as well as other key events of the last few years..i'll try to find it again and post it here sometime.

This is just Ying & Yang regurgatated.
But if today men do not follow the right path, the reason is that, counterbalancing the Great White Brotherhood, another lodge of intelligent beings works, beings who do not understand the deep meaning of life and have a diametrically opposite comprehension of it. They constitute the so-called Black Brotherhood. The Black Brotherhood is a hierarchy of beings who have various ranks according to the degree of their intelligence. In order to give you a clearer concept of their functioning, I shall say that while the White Brotherhood works in the branches and the blossoms of life, with methods pertaining to them, the Black Brotherhood works in the roots of life. While the White Brotherhood works in the head and breast of the cosmic man, the Black Brotherhood works in the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Therefore, the White Brotherhood is connected with the positive forces, with the good, and the Black Brotherhood with the negative forces, with evil in the broadest sense of the word. But at present both forces are necessary for the manifestation of life. Their services are strictly defined.
This type of ideology is abundant in the East, in the form of ancestor worship and such.

I'm not so sure that the White Brotherhood is such a good thing in itself, for just what the name alone implies..But, i will go a little further then that in saying that i think that the black and white brotherhoods are one force and entity.Masks and mirrors of each other who really want the same thing..
There are good forces and bad involved within all organizations and groups.i think in most of these cases, as the initiates reach higher levels, that the EXTREME WEALTH and POWER does a very good job in corrupting them absolutley.-The extreme obsession with SYMBOLISM makes them insane and they act thusly.
To me, there is no black or white brotherhood..THEY are ONE. THEY are the GREYS.

Immortalized for heavy metalheads by Ozzy Osbourne, this British occult figure of the mid-twenteith century sometimes preferred to be called "the Beast 666." A good-natured bisexual Satanist, Crowley served in the British Secret Service and was a heroin addict and obsessive practitioner of Tantric sex Magick. He believed that he was the antimessiah of the apocalypse. He flirted with the Thule Societ, designed the Babylon Working spell for an interdimensional gateway, and claimed that he could summon the Loch Ness Monster at will from his Boleskin House which bordered Nessie's lake(the same house in which Led Zeppelin drummer and occult enthusiast, John Bonham, drank himself to death). He was friends with Aldous Huxley and a former member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn but was kicked out buy the group in 1910 because of his obsession with sexual rites. He later ascended to Outer Head of the Ordo Templi Orientis,DuringWW..

Crowley is a prime example of the types of rituals and rites that goes on within the walls of certain secret societies..Though he used these practices in excess, he was going by the methods already established within the belief of the cults..
Personally, i think that while a "rogue magician" Crowley was working within the desires of the Occultic circles of British and American forces..
Others figures too, like Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Timothy Leary were all working for the control of the direction of the "new Age" propaganda that would continue to flow into today..Theories on lost SUPERMEN from ATLANTIS and extra-terrestriel visitiations..Spirit mediums who can contact the spirits of the dead..John Edwards and psychic Hotlines..
(Note:i do have respect for the works of Orwell, Leary and even Crowley..)
All in all, i'll say that CROWLEY was a key figure in the British-American movement to claim control over tche resserected notion of the NEW AGE MOVEMENT..THe age of Pises going into Aquarius..All of the above figures working at the same time as Hitler and the Nukes over Nagasaki.-First knells in the herelding of the "new age".
Crowley is a key figure in having paved the way to the current state of collected consciousness of the planet.-Though he died near homeless, pennyless, and clinically insane in London 1945 or 46.

From the Book Conspiranoia by Devon Jackson
BABYLON WORKING was the name of a bizarre rite first dreamed up by occult master Aleister Crowley and later enacted by his proteges and fellow occult enthusiasts L. Ron Hubbard and John Whiteside Parsons. The Working's goal was to unlock a kind of interdimensional portal and establish contact with the Supreme Beings who lie on the othere side and maybe even bring them over to our universe. In 1947, Hubbard and Parsons reencacted Crowley's Working, perhaps succeeding in ushering in the Old Ones and Spirit Guides (while ushering out Crowley who had died that year) and perhaps even bringing with them U.F.O.'s, Aliens, Bigfoot (the mythical big hairy creature of the worlds forests), the goatsucking Chupacabra of Puerto Rico, and the Loch Ness Monster, the mythical serpentine Scotish lake-dwelling creature. After all, 1947 was the year all these beings first officially showed up on the planet.

"After all, 1947 was the year all these beings first officially showed up on the planet."
Is there any correlation between the above and the use of pyschotropic drugs being used at large during this same time?

Surely drugs and alcohol play a strong roll in many societies, cults and religions, especially those of Satanism..--Usage of drugs in rituals goes back many many thousands of years..For good purposes and bad..-Some of the first records of drug use comes from Sumeria some 5000 b.c. with the ingestion of opium..It was what the Sumerians called "the joy plant".-
In Egypt the "common" people/workers were buried with jugs of beer..So they could drink forevver in the afterlife..
The Mexican Indians took sacred mushrooms to induce "metaphysical" experiences and called mushrooms the "flesh of god."--Though you can be sure that in most societies, the strongest drugs were resticted to those in charge..The high priests and kings of the major secret societies..
i'm doing a little research right now into psychedelic mushrooms and their relation to CHRISTMAS..i'll keep you posted in the next few days for any who are interested at all..
To be sure that Crowley partook in many a drug all thruout his life..
Surely drugs have been a big part of human evolution and altering of the spiritual psyche..

Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947) The most controversial and perhaps least understood magician and occultist of his time, Aliester Crowley has been both vilified and idolized.
He was a man of both excesses and high brilliance. He considered himself to be the reincarnation of other great occultists: Pope Alexabder VI, renowned for his love of physical pleasures; Edward Kelly, the notorious assistant to John Dee in Elizabethan England; Cagliostro; and Eliphas Levi, who died on the day that Aleister Crowley was born
Crowley also believed he had been Ankh-f-n-Khonsu, an Egyptian priest of the XXVIth dynasty.
Crowley named himself Baphomet when he joined the Ordo Templi Orientalis, a secret sexual magic order formed in Germany around 1896.
Crowley was born in Warwickshire, England. His father was a brewer and a preacher of Plymouthism, the beliefs of a sect founded of the Plymouth Brethren in 1830 that considered itself the only true christian order. As a child, Crowley participated in the preaching with his parents, then rebelled against it. His behaviour inspired his mother to call him "the beast" after the antichrist. Later, he called her "a brainless bigot of the most narrow, logical and inhuman type." His father died when he was 11.
As Crowley gre older, he became interested in the occult. He also discovered he was excited by descriptions of torture and blood, and he liked to fantasize about being degraded a Scarlet Woman who was both wicked and independant.
He entered Trinity College at Cambridge, where he wrote poetry and pursued, on his own, his occult studies. He loved to climb rocks and mountains and attempted some of the highest peaks in the Himalayas. In 1898 he published his first book of poetry, Aceldama, A Place to bury Strangers in. A Philosophocal Poem. By a Gentleman of the Univeristy of Cambridge, 1898. In th epreface, he described how God and Satan had fought for his soul: "God conquered - now I only have one doubt left - which of the twain was God?"
Crowley wanted to become known as a great person. He was led to choose magic as a vocation rather that avocation after reading Arthur Edward Waite's The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts, which hints of a secret brotherhood of adepts who dispense occult wisdom to certain initiates. Intrigued, Crowley wrote to Waite for more information and was refered to The Cloud upon the Sanctuary, by Carl von Eckartshausen, which tells of the Great White Brotherhood. Crowley determined he wanted to join this brotherhood and advance to the highest degree.
On November 18, 1898, Crowley joined the London chapter of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which was the first or outer order of the Great WHite Brotherhood. He discovered he had a natural aptitude for magic and rose quickly through the hierarchy. He began practicing Yoga, in the course of which he discovered his earlier incarnations. He left Trinity College without earning a degree, took a flat in Chancery Lane, named himself Count Vladimir and pursued his occult studies on a full-time basis. He advanced through the first order and sought entry into the second order of the Great White Brotherhood, a Rosicrucian order also called the Order of the Red Rose and the Golden Cross. Beyond this was the top order, The Silver Star, or A A (Argentum Astrum), which had three grades: Master of the Temple, Magus and Ipissimus. The latter could be achieved only by crossing an unknown and unchartered abyss.
Crowley was intensely competetive with S.L. MacGregor Mathers, the chief of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and a magician. Mathers taught Crowley Abra-Melin magic but had not yet attained any of the three grades in the A A. The two quarelled, and Mathers supposedly dispatched an army of elementals to attack Crowley. Crowley also argued with other members of the Golden Dawn as well and as a result was expelled from the order. He pursued the attainment of Ipissimus on his own.
Around 1899 or 1900 Crowley may have briefly joined one of old George Pickingill's covens in Essex, according to Witch lore. If he did, he makes no mention of it in his autobiography, The Confessions of Aliester Crowley.
Crowley travelled widely. He studied eatsern mysticism, including Buddhism, Tantric Yoga and the I Ching. For a time he lived in Scottland, in an isolated setting near Loch Ness. In 1903 he married Rose Kelly, who bore him one child. Rose began to recieve communications from the astral plane, and in 1904 she told Crowley that he was to recieve an extremely important message. It came from Aiwass, a Spirit and Crowley's Holy Gaurdian Angel, or ture self. Crowley also later identified Aiwass, as a magical current or solar-phallic energy worshipped by the Sumerians as Shaitan, a "devil-god", and by the Egyptians as Set. On three consecutive days in April 1904, from noon until 1 p.m., Aiwass reportedly manifested as a voice and dictated to Crowley The Book of the Law, perhaps the most significant work of his magical career. It contains the Law of Thelma: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law." Though some ohave interpreted it to mean do as one pleases, it actually means one must do what one must and nothing else. Admirers of Crowley say the Law of Thelma distinguishes him as one of the greatest magicians of history.
Aiwass also heralded the coming of a new Aeon of Horus, the third great age of humanity. The three ages were characterized as Paganism/Christianity/Thelma, represented, respectively, by ISIS/ Osirus/Horus. Crowley considered himself as the profit of the new Aeon.
From 1909 to 1913, Crowley published the secret rituals of the Golden Dawn in his periodical, The Equinox, which also served as a vehicle for his poetry. Mathers trid but failed to get an injunction to stop him. By 1912 Crowley had become involved with the Ordo Templi Orientis, a german occult order that practices sex magic.
In 1909 Crowley explored levels of the astral plane with his assistant, poet Victor Neuberg, using Enochian Magic. He believed that he had crossed the abyss and united his consciousness with the universal consciousness, thus becoming Master of the Temple. He described the astral jouneys in The Vision and the Voice, published first in The Equinox and prosthumously in 1949.
Crowley kept with him a series of "scarlet women." The best known of these was Leah Hirsig, the "Ape of Thoth," who indulged with him in drinking, drugs and sexual magic and who could sometimes contact Aiwass. Crowley apparently made several attempts with various scarlet women to beget a "magical child," none of which was successfull. He later fictionalized these efforts in his novel Moonchild, published in 1929.
From 1915 to 1919 Crowley lived in the United States. In 1920 he went to Sicily and founded the Abbey of Thelma, which he envisioned as a magical colony.
In 1921, when Crowley was 45, he and Hirsig conducted a ritual in which Crowley achieved Ipissimus and became, according to his cryptic description, a god ("As a God goes, I go"). He did not reveal attaining Ipissimus to anyone, only hinting at it in his privately published Magical Record much later, in 1929. After the transformation, however, Hirsig found him intolerable. Crowley later discarded he and aquired a new scarlet woman, Dorothy Olsen.
In 1922 Crowley accepted an invitation to head the Ordo Templi Orientis. In 1923 the bad press that he routinely recieved led to his expulsion from Sicily, and he had to abandon his abbey. After some wandering through France (where he suffered from a heroin addiction), Tunisia and Germany, he returned to England.
In 1929 he married his second wife, Maria Ferrari de Miramar, in Leipzig.
In his later years he was plagued with poor health, drug addiction and financial trouble. He kept himself afloat by publishing his writings, both nonfiction and fiction. In 1945 he moved to a boarding house in Hastings, where he lived the last two years of his life, a dissipated shadow of his former vigorous self. During these last years, he was introduced Gerald B. Gardner, an English witch, by Arnold Crowther. He died in 1947 in Hastings.
Crowley's other published books include The diary of a Drug Fiend; Magick in Theory and Practice, still considered one of the best books on ceremonial magic; The Strategem, a collection of fiction stories; The Equinox of the Gods, which sets forth the Book of the Law as mankind's new religion; and The Book of Thoth, his interperetation of the Tarot. Confessions originally was intended to be a six-volume autohagiography, but only the first two volumes were published. Typically, he argued with the publishing company, which was taken over by his friends and then went out of business. The remaining galleys and manuscripts - he had dictated the copy to Hirsig while under the influence of heroin - were lost or scattered about. They were collected and edited by John Symonds and Kennith Grant and published in a single volume in 1969.
Crowley referred to himself in some of his writings as "the Master Therion" and " Frater Perdurabo." He spelled magic as Magick to "distinguish the science of the Magi from all its counterfeits." Some modern occultists continue to follow suit!
