Global conflict gathers momentum well if you read it that way i suppose.
President Hugo Chavez dared the U.S. on Friday to put Venezuela on a list of countries accused of supporting terrorism, calling it one more attempt by Washington to undermine him for political reasons.

If I remember correctly, Venezuela's heavy weight crude can only be refined by a handful of refiners world wide, and most of these are located on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

He needs the U.S. as badly as the U.S. needs him.

you know...the stuff going on right reminds me of two things.

the part in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, where the bad guys blow up the oil pipeline or refinery, and the part in Hunt for Red October (in the movie) where Fred Thompson, says something along the lines of "Things will continue to get out of control".

I think Chavez is just trying to provoke us into a confrontation...which could prove hazardous, because if we go picking on them, then they can make us look bad in front of the world, and cause an outcry around the world and we might find ourselves in a heap of trouble.

basically the bully is being exposed for exactly what he is...a big mean bully who likes to pick on everyone and threaten and bully. THE USA is the bully. things are quickly escalating in a lot of different areas.

Excuse me, USoHypocrisy, I misread your post, I apologize.
Let me edit this one, as I was really telling you off. :-)

To back up, now, what you said above.

What is our fevered interest in the region, anyway? OIL.
Venezuela's Heavy Oil Production in Orinoco Basin Exceeds 600 ths. bbl/d (http://www.oilandgaseurasia.com/news/p/0/news/1967)

We're wanting OIL, especially now in these unsteady financial times.

US Financial Crisis and Venezuela. A chain of events. (http://axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_26242.shtml)

The United States is never beyond causing all manner of BS in any region that has something it wants.

Our gov lied to get us into Iraq, why would anybody believe anything they have to say about Venezuela?
Just as any danger Iraq or Saddam might have presented was GREATLY exaggerated and in some cases, outright lied about, in order to build up reasons to bomb the fuck out of the country and secure our interests (OIL), and just as the US is doing the same thing to get us into Iran in order to secure more OIL, Venezuela and Chavez are receiving the same treatment.

Did you know that Columbia officially apologized to Venezuela for the recent US funded fiasco?
The region would be in relative peace if the US backed out. But that is not what our Prez really wants, by no means.
It is to our benefit to keep up a chaotic vibe, in order to eventually gain control of the region and its natural resources, mostly OIL.

But did they double-dog dare us?

Personally I think Venezuela may be an issue at some point, though one it would probably be best to approach in a civil manner, the whole FARC-Ecuador-Colombia-Venezuela situation was tense enough.
