Animal Diseases moving here

President Bush's administration wants to move the Research labs for infectious animal diseases here.
They are currently on an isolated island.
Moving them to the mainland could cause massive infections if a spill was to occur.
Entire herds of cattle and sheep could be wiped out.
This could be the biggest "Bone Head" move of the century, says olddragon.

A simulation was run on an out break with so many animals having to be destroyed that the military was used and they ran out of ammunition!
It states that there would be riots but no estimate was given for how many humans had to be killed.
It did say that a trench 25 miles long would have to be dug in Kanas to bury the carcasses.

and the potental is there for massive food shortages in corn and grains.
Now add to that infected herds and no meat to eat.
How many millions will starve?

Now, like other lawmakers from the states under consideration, Roberts supports moving the government's new lab to his state. Manhattan, Kan., is one of five mainland locations under consideration. "It will mean jobs" and spur research and development, he says.

The only jobs it'll create are for the Construction of the new Facilities.
Unless they're planning on giving the research an Uber-Boost of funding there should only be the same amount of Scientists as there were on the island.



"Would an accidental laboratory release at these locations have the potential to affect nearby livestock?" asked the nine-page document. It did not directly answer the question.

Probably because the answer was "Most Definitely".



The White House says modern safety rules at labs are sufficient to avoid any outbreak. But incidents in Britain have demonstrated that the foot-and-mouth virus can cause remarkable economic havoc — and that the virus can escape from a facility.

Nothing worse than not learning from the Past.

I dont remember the exact details but back in the 70's there was a scare at a research facility on the east coast. Monkey's were brought in routinely and were supposedly screened for various diseases and such. One with ebola got through. Fortunately it was apparently a strain of ebola that did not infect humans. I thought it was pretty bad at the time that the only thing that stopped a potentially serious outbreak of hemmorhagic fever was pure dumb luck.

I am pretty sure we can be that dumb again, but will we be as lucky?

Offcource it has to be noted that deceases are carried by people and other lifeforms.
If the scientists have physical contact with the mainland regularly. It wont do any better than placing the faculty on the mainland.

But indeed. A world wide plague hitting a species that is necessary to sustain humanity is indeed a grim scenario.

But we shouldn't look just at farm animals.
There are plenty of animals that play a large part in humanities survival without us farming and monitoring them.

Take for instance the animals that eat most of the locusts in the world.
If something happens to them we would have more and bigger swarms eating away our food.
Or the idea that the carrier of some kind of superebola is forced to raid dumpsters because a decease wiped out its natural food source.

This is frightening. I remember traveling to France during the big hoof and mouth outbreak, we had to throw our shoes away before boarding the plane back to the US and I wasn't even near cattle. I can't imagine bringing this to the mainland as being a good idea. Unless of course it is part of some sinister plot... Don't get me started.

This will take several years to happen.
They don't decide on the new site until later this year.
Then figure at least 18 to 24 months construction.
Obama will be in the White house and WHOOPS.....
