I grew up listening to some of the best: Heavy Metal, The Wall, Rocky Horor Picture Show, Chess (and for anyone who actually knows about that, kudus to you!). Also there were some with just simply awesome tunes like Streets of Fire, Purple Rain, Beverly Hills Cop, and yes, Ghostbusters...oh and almost fogot..Dirty Dancing!
Any others I am missing that you think belong in Best Soundrtrack?
Oh and I won't even go there with the greatest living musician today, John Williams...I mean, c'mon now..Jaws, ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurrasic Park, ad infenitum.
oh my God and how could I have forgotten about what is arguably the best sountrack to a movie ever: FANTASIA.

I was just thinking about this and wondering if there was a thread about it! You are psychic, medicvet.
My favorites are:
Amelie
Blow
The Craft
Donnie Darko
Forrest Gump
Girl, Interrupted
Kill Bill, Vol. 1 & 2
A Knight's Tale
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Practical Magic
The Royal Tenenbaums
Twister (There are a few country tracks I don't like, but the rest is A-1... Van Halen's Humans Being and Respect the Wind are worth it alone)
Also, Queen of the Damned's score and soundtrack are good (but not the movie, mind!!!)
Donnie Darko and Girl, Interrupted both have the most chilling scores I have ever heard (with the exception of Suspiria), just as great as the actual soundtracks.
As long as we're talking about scores... The Secret Garden, Chocolat, Little Women and The Last of the Mohicans are all fantastic.

Oh how could I have forgotten about the soundtrack to Forrest Gump, all four cd's of them..wish I had that collection.
And that selecion above is awesome..
My personal favorite for all soundtracks has got to be 'streets of fire'...so many freaking awesome songs and the movie that was essentially a video with the plot as background for the songs...here are two examples:

Dazed and Confused is one of those movies that would not have survived without the awesome soundtrack.
Many good ones have been quoted here (John Williams is a given). I also like the soundtrack of:
Braveheart
Usual Suspects
LA Confidential
Swingers
I don't know about everyone else, but if I love the soundtrack I almost always love the movie.

Ok I know Mel Gibson has fallen out of favor in the last couple of years. But I have to go with Brave Heart.

Ditto on Forrest Gump. And who doesn't love "One Night in Bangkok"?? Murrey Head is SO the shit!!! XD
I am embarrassed to say that I really love Broadway musical soundtracks. My ultimate fav is Jesus Christ Superstar, but I also really love Evita (NOT w/ Antonio Bandaras and Madonna. No one can sing it like Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin. I melt every time I hear "High Flying, Adored").
I also really like Notre Dame de Paris, even though its kind of overwrought.
Oh...and what about Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog? That's a pretty awesome soundtrack!

To Live And Die In L.A. - somehow Wang Chung pulled out an incredibly atmospheric and subtle 'euro-pop' from the ether - side 1 is music with lyrics and the side 2 is all instrumental.
the works of Howard Shore - Canadian and some of the movies he's scored you might recognize - Dogma, the Lord Of The Rings ...
the music from Battlestar Galactica - Bear is so cool ...
Phantom Of The Paradise - Phoenix, Swan and Winslow, cool ...
Hedwig and the Angry Inch - who'd of thunk trans-sexual dilemma could rock so hard?
just some of the better soundtracks I haven't seen listed yet (of course I might have missed a double listing, oh well).
*Merano, Merano ...*

Omigod I just freaking love Chess...I know there is a broadway version, but I had the London version, and I played those two records over and over and over again because the story and the music was just that awesome. All I knew about it was the one that made the top 40, "One Night In Bangcock", but when I discovered the rest of the music ...whoa.
Oh yah, and how could I have forgotten Dazed and Confused and Ghostbusters and Heavy Metal.
and then I discovered Mike Oldfield..thanks to the popularity of the movie The Excorcist Tubular Bells helped him make his name, but I like all his stuff..just like it took Chariots of Fire to give Vangelis exposure, but the ironic thing to me is that the theme to that is the only thing of theirs I actually don't care for.

I don't this band even knows HOW to crank out a song if it ain't fucking good ass rock n' roll! And the lyrics to this kickass too! I still remember this movie because I got pissed off that a bunch of teenyboppers in the front were laughin at this shit, for realz.
The video game says "Play me"
Face it on a level but it takes you every time on a one on one
Feeling running down your spine
Nothing gonna save your one last dime cause it owns you
Through and through
The databank knows my number
Says I gotta pay cause I made the grade last year
Feel it when I turn the screw
Kicks you round the world, there ain't a thing that it can't do
Do to you
CHORUS:
Who made who, who made you?
Who made who, ain't nobody told you?
Who made who, who made you?
If you made them and they made you
Who picked up the bill, and who made who? (or who picked up the glue,...)(?)
Who made who, who turned the screw?
Satellites send me picture
Get it in the eye, take it to the world (take it to the wire)
Spinning like a dynamo
Feel it going round and round
Running out of chips, you got no line in an 8-bit town
So don't look down, no
CHORUS
Ain't nobody told you, who made who?

Danny Elfman is a genius. The first time I became aware of him was when Men in Black came out. That song at the beginning was just so good.

I absolutely love the music to the move "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams and Jimmy Cliff, but cannot find the soundtrack to it anywheres. Since my birthday is coming up, if anyone can send me that and the london soundtrack to Chess I would be extroadinarily grateful. :D

All good soundtracks, and worthy of mention.
I was going to order the old English play version of Chess, but Hastings said it was out of stock, but since they did the broadway one (which I didn't like as well), and they are now coming out with another rendition of the British play, I will get that one when it comes out..it is so worth it!
EDIT: here are a few of the simply awesome songs from chess..

I remember growing up playing the soundtrack to Grease constantly. My daughter did the same...some things just go beyond generational, lol.
Matter of fact, first time she saw West Side Story was with me, and she got mad because I already knew how much of an unhappy ending it was. Still some excellent songs there though:

Apocalypse Now
Departed
Armageddon
Good Fellas
