These are the list of people who have expressed a strong interest in going, in no particular oder: medicvet, uki, olddragon, ystrdaiproffett, Fhyre, Freaked Out, juilain28t1, DVD, Maximum Pain, Jena62, Krakatoa, Harry61, Shortround, Mystery, and AssassinX. Let me know if I have missed you and you would like to be added to the list, and you will be added. I would like to have only people with a direct interest in going to vote, if possible. I also think that late spring/early summer would be a good time for the get together, as no one would have to worry about icy roads...let me know if ya'll have a stronger reason for it being held at any other time.

I am going to make a poll having options on it that most of us here have discussed. After that, we will take the top five, and if your place you voted for isn't in it, you can pick a new place among the top five. Then after that, there will be a second run off to the top two, and again, if you voted for a number three but there are only two, you get to vote for the top two, and after that the number one place gets it. I hope I didn't make that too complicated..

Anyway, here is the first poll:

I'm surprised in the lack of response. A poll was a step in the right direction in making this about the members and trying to include everyone. I think though that alot of people who showed interest originally haven't been around as much lately. It's that time of the year though.

So far we have a three way tie here...Can we set a date by which we have a decision? And if anyone isn't happy, too bad, they should have spoken up sooner?

I voted Yellowstone because it would seem appropriate for us to meet at the sight of the super volcano after all this is an end of the world site.

The odds of me being able to make it are quite low but I still want to try. Somewhere in the middle of the country would be best someplace that is in the middle of where every one would be coming from.

proffett
Nov 16th, 2008, 5:30 PM
MP- was there a place on the list that you think you would be able to swing? yellowstone would be fucking amazing, but I know I can't make it there either.

MaximumPain
Nov 16th, 2008, 7:14 PM
For me its more about money and getting the OK from my wife. So we will have to play it by ear and either I bring her with (and my son) or work something out. I live in Minnesota so someplace within a 2 or 3 state radius would be best for me. However I dont want to weigh down the decision with my travel problems if every one comes up with a place that works for them then they should go with it. Stuff like this is very hard to get organized.

proffett
Nov 16th, 2008, 9:02 PM
I agree MP. I have organized a few meetups in my day and everytime dates, locations and activities are difficult to arrange. I also know how you feel about having to get the Ok and deciding whether to stag or brin along the family. At this point I am not sure if I will be coming alone or bringing just the husband or the whole damn family lol.

Well, if it is going to be in any of the continuous 48 states I would like Memphis, Tennessee, it's kind of middlin to where everyone is, and it looks like everyone who wants to go would be doing about the same amount of driving or transportation or what have you.

And DVD, honey how can you not go..I thought you would be the most at any party! :D

medicvet

How about we leave the poll thread open until the 1st,then close it and have a 'run off of the places that have votes in them, and then open up a poll with just those.

Then leave that open for a week or so and the one with the most votes wins. And I would say June or July would be good because of the weather..I have been to Yellowstone, and still remember the park ranger saying that they have two seasons there: July and winter, lol.

So by the end of Dec at the very latest, we will have a place staked out, and will have the get together by July at the latest, and that way we can start making definite plans. How does that sound? I'm game for just about any place that will get us together, and if nothing else, proffett and I will dance around the fire and under the stars. ;)

uki
Nov 17th, 2008, 5:55 PM
this is why you just hold regionals until people see that there are people attending, after time, more will come... hell, we can even start an AO travel fund to help support members travelling to future gatherings... yet deep down inside i believe it is all for nil as the coming storm is blowing in fast... our AO meet might end up being in line at some FEMA concentration camp somewhere... but, if there was to be a first, we must hold it in the keystone state, afterall it is where it all started if i can remember correctly.

So far we have eight single votes for areas, and 2 votes for Pennsylvania. Keep those votes pouring in until the 1st! On the first, we will take the ones that have gotten at least one vote and use it as a 'run off'.. we could either hold another run off between the top two vote getters to see who would take it all, or we could just say that whoever got the most votes in the second poll is the one to be assigned at.

One way or another, this thing WILL happen! I haff spoken! :bondage:

Ok, I voted Yellowstone. Just because I went there a couple of years ago and it was really pretty.

Oklahoma has that beautiful lake, been to Ohio, Penn, Vegas, and Memphis. So nothing is really not do-able for me. I would be open to almost any of the places. And ya, I would have to bring the hubby, he knows most of you by my descriptions anyways, take it for what it is worth...

There is a fact of money for everyone, but I don't see an exact date set yet. So... save up and get there.

Point being that it really needs to be somewhere, where everyone can have some sort if interest. :0.02:

Well now I am dying to know whose ass Uki has in mind!

I am not a part of this although I'd like to meet you all, because at this moment I am not feeling as if traveling away from home is an option. My son is about to become a father and I told both he and his girl friend I would help with the baby if she would just keep it. So next summer unless I can bring a baby with me anywhere, I won't be going, and that is why I've not taken part in this conversation so far.

BUT an idea for you all to help with expenses, why not find a place that has yurt or cabin camping? It will not be as ritzy as a nice hotel but you'll save tons of $$$$$ AND have lots of fun. A yurt here costs $27 per night, a cabin $35.
Compare that to the price of a motel even in winter months and you see a big savings right there.
Most of these cabins/yurts have electricity, beds, and heat- you simply bring your own bedding and food. They all have fire-pits out the door and many also have grills as well. Everyone I can think of in my mind is less than 20 minutes away from a grocer.

On that note, actually, next summer, you all should simply come here. We have campgrounds of all sorts, from primitive to RV (which RV-ing is NOT camping, damnit!) and we're right by the ocean. But I guess its too late to toss that into the pot :-)

proffett
Nov 20th, 2008, 9:13 AM
Assassin, I can take you as long as you can put up with my singing in the car. You're so close to me anyway, I was going to email to see if it was an option.

Nu Kua- I think we are all thinking of primitive camping or small cabins. I'm all for tents, no electricity or running water hehe. My dad will most likely be watching my kiddos since I think they are at good ages (and mommy can deal with the seperation) to leave for a weekend. The west coast would be awesome, but I wouldn't be able to join ya'll.

We'll see. If you plan it, they will come LMAO!!

medicvet
Nov 20th, 2008, 10:10 PM
So the main thing would be camping, and I am with most people in that you ain't really camping until the tent is pitched and the bonfire is flickering...perfect ghost story shit.

And for those who wouldwant to, of course bring the RV's, lol...I will of course be using their bathrooms if where we're camping doesn't have toilets that flush! ::p:

And there are always cabins with bunk beds in them or beds and pull out beds in the sofa..

There are lots of places all around to do that, basically most of the places discussions would have something of that nature near them. If someone is for Ohio, how about bringing up some campsites and prices and what all, same with someone that wants Pennslyvania let them present what is great about it, and I am okay with just about anyplace, although I do think that there are nice places in OK right by where I'm at, or we could do something that is a real 'historical' national park like Yellowstone...Just whatever gets the interest going...I would like us to have a definite locale mind by the end of december at the latest, that would give me months to save up for the trip if it is far away.

My only prerequisate (besides flushing toilets) is that there HAS to be someplace to swim in..I am a true 'water baby', and if I can float around, I'm a happy camper, literally, lol!

Looks like Pennsylvania is winning so far with three votes, followed then by Ohio and Yellowstone with two each. If it continues along these lines, we could probably just hold a three way vote by Turkey day. I admit I don't know much about pennyslvania or Ohio...could someone post a few links of things to do or to events going on in the early summer...if it's doable, June would be cool...don't most kids get out in June? My kids get out in May but they start up again in August.

I voted for jamaica, obviously, lol, but when we are down to the last five choices, that means that people that voted for other places like me, will now be able to put their vote wherever they want to on the run off.

Okay, Okay, I know, I'm vote happy...but I'm going through election withdrawals, and need a fix@!!!::p:

I had to vote Yellowstone, because not only is it near enough that I would consider going, but it just makes the most sense for the overall theme of this site. Wouldn't it be ironic if this just happened to be the time that it decided to blow? Maybe it will at least shake a little for us.

Medic, I'll get some information about Ohio up here tonight when I have a spare minute!!

*Edit* I wanted to post this quickly.

Mohican State Park
My personal favorite.

Lodge

The lodge at Mohican offers luxurious seclusion and comfortable resort accommodations.
There are 96 air-conditioned rooms, each with a private balcony and color television.
The lodge is equipped with private meeting and banquet rooms for groups up to 425, a dining room, sauna, gift shop, lounge, and olympic-size indoor and outdoor pools.
Cottages

Twenty-five two-bedroom family cottages are located along the river in a wooded area.
Each of the cottages will accommodate six people.
The cottages are heated for year-round use and contain cooking utensils, towels, bed linens and blankets.

Camping

118 electric sites
33 full hook-up sites
35 non-electric sites
The main campground is equipped with showers, flush toilets, dump station and a camp commissary.
The group camp can accommodate organized groups of up to 100 people.
Two camper cabins, which come equipped with bunk and double beds, a mini refrigerator and fan, can be rented during the summer.

Trails

Over 13 miles of trails take the visitor to the more interesting areas of the park and forest.
Lyons Falls trail follows Clear Fork Gorge and features two waterfalls.
The Hemlock trail leads to the scenic wooden bridge, and Pleasant Hill trail follows the lake shoreline and offers beautiful views of the lake.
Other trails are available in the adjacent state forest for horsepeople as well as hikers.
Biking

Mohican State Park offers an 8.5-mile mountain bike trail that also passes through Mohican State Forest. The scenic terrain is varied, offering a little of something for riders of all skill levels.
Open both to mountain bike riders and hikers, the trail travels from the state park campground, off State Route 3, to County Road 939, near the state forest headquarters. 3116 State Route 3, Loudonville, Ohio 44842, (419) 994-5125.
Picnicking

Picnic areas are located around the park and offer tables, latrines and drinking water.
Four shelterhouses may be reserved.
Contact the park office for details.
Fishing and Hunting

The Mohican River is noted for smallmouth bass fishing. Largemouth bass, carp, crappie, catfish, perch and bluegill are also abundant in the river and at nearby Pleasant Hill Reservoir.
Hunting opportunities are available in the adjacent state forest.
A valid Ohio fishing and/or hunting license is required.
Swimming

An olympic-size pool is located in the campground for use by campers and cottage guests.
Lodge guests may use the two pools located at the lodge.
Boating

The Clearfork of Mohican River, which flows through the park, is one of the finest canoeing rivers in Ohio.

More To Do

The campground offers many recreational activities such as bike rental, volleyball and basketball courts and horseshoe pits.
The park commissary loans games and sporting equipment to registered campers.
A naturalist program is offered during the summer months.

Area Attractions

Wolf Creek/Pine Run Grist Mill is located in Mohican State Park adjacent to SR 3. This grist mill was built in 1831 and originally stood north of Loudonville at Wolf Creek. It was dismantled, moved and reconstructed at its present location in 1971 next to Pine Run stream. The grist mill features an overshot waterwheel that powers two millstones where grain was ground into flour. Today the grist mill is being restored and operated as a working museum by park volunteers. Visitors are welcome to tour the grist mill which is usually open on weekends during the summer. For more information visit the grist mill's website.

Malabar Farm State Park which is northwest of Mohican was the home of Louis Bromfield -- noted author, farmer and conservationist. Visitors can tour Bromfield's "Big House" or take a wagon tour of the farm.

Mohican State Memorial Forest, located adjacent to the park, offers public hunting and trails for horseback riding, snowmobiling and hiking.

Fowler Woods State Nature Preserve which is north off State Route 13, is a mixture of mature beach-maple forest and swamp forest. There is a rich display of spring flowers in the woods. Visitation during daylight hours only.

Picnic tables and grill sites are located in scenic areas throughout the park. A concession stand offers limited picnic supplies. Fires are permitted only in the grills provided.

Check out the link here for more information: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/mohican/tabid/769/Default.aspx

Roughly $26.00 a night for a single camp site. I didn't have any luck looking up rates for groups. They offer group camping, but it is in the middle of a freaking field in full sun and five miles from a shower. I don't mind bathing in streams, but others might not enjoy the five mile hike to wash behind their ears, ya know? Still I am not sure we are going to have a big enough group to get serious discounts anyway. So if we plan far enough in advance we can get our sites close together in prime locations!

Not in Vegas. I cannot stand one more night on the strip. I had every friend, and relative visit this year, and I went down on the strip as their guide. For the real people who live normal lives in the city of Las Vegas, the strip is like doing jury duty. It ain't fun for us at all. I vote yellowstone. But in the summer. I was there in Adust of 87. Okay, seriously not sure what thread it was on, but a waterpark was mentioned, and I can't remember anything about them except one of them was in Kansas I think.

Anyway, I am going to check out Yellowstone..went there once when I was 16 and spent a few nights tenting out there. I still remember getting there at like 3am and the park ranger said they were completely filled up. He parked by the gate, and a few hours later, right when the sun was fixin to come up, it was all different shades of pink and blue pastels..It was a real fun trip, and would love to do that again.

:dunno:I swear I frikken posted but don't see my name anywhere's WTF?

After reading that Yellowstone is gaining, and reading proff's post, ya'll may want to rethink Yellowstone. It is expensive. If I remember correctly, there is a Wal-mart in Cody WY which about 45 minutes from Yellowstone, other than that if you need supplies, they are really expensive.

Park passes alone are $20+ for a day and like $50 for a weekend pass. Major hassle getting in and out of the park at peak times because of the long lines. And, not real sure, but maybe no campfires.

I don't think the cabins and the tent areas are very reasonable either, again if I remember right. And depending on the time of year, ya don't really wanna sleep in a tent when the bears are out..

Yellowstone, touristy place, lots to do and see, but I thought the point was to meet and well talk since that is kinda what we do here.

So... with campsites at $26.00 per night that is much cheaper than any hotel, or RV space in Yellowstone. Not to mention a much more relaxing way of looking at things.

I am probably in the best of places to get anywhere in the US since I am in the middle. It is easy for me to get anywhere lower 48 by driving, usually no more than 3 days tops.

But just keep me posted:cool03:

That was my worry Harry, too touristy and therefore pricey. I'm all about finding a nice piece of real estate and setting up a tent and having a huge fire. Preferably in a forest with a lake and or river near by. I'm doing my best to make this happen, but it takes an effort by everyone who is interested. We will have a final vote after the 1st. It is going to come down to two things for people, proximity and expense.

Now, get to voting and make this happen!!!

I still say we need to jet to Jamaica mon! :afro:

Okay, or Turner Falls or Robber's Cave or Tenkiller Lake..in OK

But I'm good with just about anyplace, like it's been said, just as long as we actually do this, that's the important thing.

I remember how freakingly expensive everything was in the area right outside Yellowstone now too. During that summer trip I took with my family when I was 16, we did Yosemite, Bryce, Zion, Yellowstone, and Grand Canyon. We tented it most of the time, or stayed with friends or relatives, and think during the 3 1/2 some weeks we were on vacation, we only slept about four or five nights at actual hotels. Five kids and my folks in a station wagon with stuff piles on top..yah, just like National Lampoons Vacation, except we had no dead dog or dead relative riding on top, lolol! :D

I just can't find that much to interesting about Pennsylvania, but if at the end of this process that's where it'll be, I will still definitely be there.

I did just remember a while back looking at stuff in South Dakota online for a friend making plans to go to Sturgis, and remember Deadwood looked pretty intersting..check it out:

http://www.deadwood.org/

and this looks like it would be nice and not too expensive:

http://www.terrypeaklodge.com/

let me know if ya'll like what you see with that..maybe we could have the final vote be top three and a wild card?? Okay, I'll stop..I'm just really excited about this now, even if it won't be until next spring at the earliest before I can go. ;)

Late getting in the thread.. had to rebuild the 'puter was offline for a while. :(
I agree, although i've seen yellowstone many times, it would be a perfect place.
I am sure there are a ton of places near there to tent camp, there are a few right in yellowstone, i cant remember what they cost a night. Can check and find out.
There are some considerations for tent camping in the area to think about.
Wolf's, Bears, Cats. although in the months picked it should be not to much of a problem, bears are fed from spring thaw.
We always to go Gardner its the north entrance to yellowstone, small tourist town. (real small) But has a store, 2 motel's gas station etc.
If its decided for there i can help out and do some checking around.
but open to a lot of places, i'd love to have the time and cash to head back to missouri to see family, maby do both at once.

Yellowstone is kicking ass and taking names I see. If this is the case I may have to reevaluate how I am going to spend my tax return... On the upside, driving from Ohio will allow me to offer rides to more peeps.... Going to find out the amount of driving entailed...

*Edit* I was originally given a "hell no" for traveling to Yellowstone... So I will have to work on my persuasion skills...

*Edit, again* 1,768 miles from me. That's equal to one day and three hours drive or 27 HOURS STRAIGHT.

After a "discussion" with the other half, apparently I am on my own figuring out how to get to Yellowstone... Anyone thinking train think again... That leaves driving, by bus, or plane. I'm not driving, the gas alone will cost me $300.00 just to get there. So, bus or plane? Oh and I will need travel buddies. I don't do well on my own LMAO!

Six days left in the preliminary vote!

I did some more research on the 'keystone' state, and pennsylvania would be fine by me. And it wouldn't have to be out and out camping, getting together at one motel would be fine..last time I had a get together (first and last time atually, was in '04) we were at a hotel with a nice 'lobby' area with comfortable couches and just hung out talking around there, and even some of us shared rooms.

Yellowstone sure is a drive..is there anyone besides me who lives west of the Mississipi? If not, then maybe we could have the river as a kind of 'dividing line' as where to look into, and go east from 'ole mis' And yah, it pretty much looks like state parks are cheaper than national ones.

And why wouldn't a train trip be feasible? Not necessarily just to Yellowstone, but to almost about everyplace. I have taken many train trips, and find it not just a comfortable way to go, but a way to relax and look out on gorgeous scenery, get to chat with and get to know other folks, and can go to one of the downstairs cars where I can sit down at when my fears start to get at me.

I have been looking around at different areas that have state parks with camping cabins and hotel rooms all around the same area, with a place to swim too, and there is a lot out thre.

I do like Memphis best right now,(even tho of course I voted for Jamaica, lol!) simply because it would be an interesting place that is not too far to drive to for me..or maybe Nashville or someplace like that..I'm just throwing some ideas out there to see what sticks and sounds best for the biggest number of people. I also would like it if I didn't have to drive all the way to the east coast, but more between where I live and the east coast..I know I know it's a lot of different stuff flung out all at once, but am just throwing some ideas up against the wall to see what sticks.

edit: am also just trying to present as many ideas and options as possible to see what is liked best by the most people before the 'closing' time on the poll. If I was going to make one today, these would be what I would like to see up there as options:

pennsylvania
yellowstone
ohio
tennessee

what do ya'll think of that as a 'final four' on the first, then see how many pick where within those options?

Well, I know exactly what state I will be 'rooting' for, I like the whole caving thing, and as long as I can afford to stay somewhere I can do some swimming in (i'm so lardy i naturally float, lol), would prefer kentucky, but even if it is Yellowstone and as expensive as hell, would still give it my utmost effort to be there.

Four days left for the preliminary vote.

We need to limit the final vote to three choices so the votes will not be evenly dispursed. I really don't want to have a third vote lol. The suspension is killing me here. I am willing to sacrifice Ohio, mostly because I think Kentucky is a better choice. We could drop Tennessee too due to lack of interest.

What if the final three are

Yellowstone
Penn
Kentucky (wild card)

I have info up here about Kentucky, should we dig up information about places in Penn?

Hey, that sounds great to me. You are right, that way we don't have to have another poll, and can let this one be the deciding factor..should be wait until the 1st or just start one now? I was thinking we could start a thread with the three, just close this one and let everyone vote on the three, anyone agree/disagree have any feedback?

I'm fine with starting the poll now. Seems like everyone who is going to vote has already.
