A very small town in Sicily is having a problem with all their electronics catching fire.

Sounds like something that also happened in a town in Mexico.

My first explanation: arson.

Barring that, the first set of fires will have been caused by a power surge. Once the power was cut off, inexperience with candles caused the second set of fires.

All residents were removed from the town after the generator caught fire, so I would assume that the researchers would have had more technological lighting sources (i.e. flashlights)
