Actually, I am a recovering pro-wrestling fanatic and as such, I love MMA. Mostly because of what Dana White has done for it, but also because it is real. I love the different styles and disciplines and watching them come together. The guys who can throw punches and the guys who grapple, each with their own mastered abilities, it's all very cool and delightfully entertaining.
Sure it's more entertaining than honoring the tradition of Martial Arts, but isn't that how things evolve? These guys train all over the world with unique masters of disciplines like JJ, Muay Thai, Judo and Sambo, in addition, many of the guys master more than one sytle, hence Mixed Martial Arts.
These guys are good at what they do without all the pomp and circumstance that comes with the scripted and concocted nature (not to mention the fake injuries and lame ass story line.. Basically a soap opera for men really) of wrestling. That ego banter is replaced with the actual match and the score is settled in the Octagon. The best man emerges triumphant and his title speaks for him.
This is as close to real fighting as many guys will ever get too. Sure you can't bite a guys ear off or kick em in the junk, and yes, there are rules where as balls to the wall street fighting has none, but that's why it is a sport. And a great sport, real hand to hand combat, man to man, in a controlled environment. These guys can throw down, whether they are the ground and pound types, submission experts or just mad awesome strikers, it's always a good show.
So, from a reformed wrestling junkie who indulges in MMA, and a chick to boot, I say it's the best sport out there. As for the list of my top five, well...
1. Liddel (can't help myself, he held his title forever.. Now we wait for the comeback)
2. A Silva
3. Fedor
4. St. Pierre
5. Hughes/ or Bisping
Now.. How do I become an Octagon girl? HAHAHAHA....

I'm not a fan of the heavy weight classes and the guys making the money.
I like the small time local stuff where it really looks like so much randori in Judo (full resistance sparring). In the smaller MMA organizations I have seen, you almost never see knockout wins (although it is possible), and almost always see submissions. Just like in old school Judo and BJJ tournaments. I find this more, I don't know, true to the martial art tradition.
Granted, it's nothing but a trend, because there is nothing different in the rules (as far as I am aware), but it seems most of the guys around here really put emphasis on Brazilian Jiujutsu, which is really modified Judo. So, you get glorified randori in the tournaments.

They re-broadcast Affliction : Day of reckoning on HD net tonight.
First of all, what a great card. Second.... Wow... Arlovski KO.....
Brilliant work from HDNET and even better from the fighters. I wish the UFC would throw their PPV's on SPIKETV after a few months. I think it would promote more interest in the fights.... HDNET nailed affliction's presentation. Awesome fights, awesome cards.....

this was posted on my health benefits of urine thread on KFM, so i thought i'd share it with the MMA thread over here. :w00t:
Undefeated after 14 fights in the career, Lyoto Machida impresses, and it’s the result of hard work. After knocking out Thiago Silva and get his chance for the title against Rashad Evans, the Brazilian revealed his secrets on the trainings to TATAME Magazine’s March issue. For those who think that good trainings happen with academies full of tough fighters, Machida goes for the opposite way.
“My training is with my family, out Karate, and it makes it more easy. If I go out there, maybe I won’t find what I have in Belém any place in the world. I train with guys who live there”, tells Lyoto. Besides telling all his preparation routine, the undefeated fighter revealed a curious tradition in his family, a secret until then: urine therapy. Once in the day, he and his family drinks their own urine. “My father does that for a long time and bring it to us. People think it’s a joke (laughs). I never said it in the United States because I don’t know how the fans will react (laughs). I drink my urine every morning like a natural medicine”, revealed the fighter.

Josh Barnett fails drug test - doesn't get to fight Fedor.
Josh Barnett is appealing the positive drug test that has denied him a license to fight Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of Affliction "Trilogy" on Aug. 1 in Anaheim, Calif.
"It's our understanding that Josh has taken further measures to validate the results of the test, and if the results stand, then we're deeply disappointed," Affliction VP Tom Atencio said Wednesday.
Two samples were taken from a pre-fight test three weeks ago and the one tested resulted Tuesday in a positive. The California commission is currently in the process of testing the second sample.
Read more here. (http://mma.fanhouse.com/2009/07/22/josh-barnett-to-appeal-failed-drug-test/)
Josh is fighting the test results and there is still a chance he could fight the current heavy weight champ.
The organization is looking at four potential opponents right now: Vitor Belfort, Bobby Lashley, Brett Rogers and Ricardo Arona. They believe one of those fighters will take the fight on short notice.
More here. (http://mma.fanhouse.com/2009/07/22/lashley-rogers-belfort-and-arona-considered-as-possible-barnet/)
I doubt they will have trouble finding a challenger. Although Fedor will still kick their ass, whoever it is. After the way He KO'd Arlovski - I'm still shocked, I was expecting them to go the distance.

LOL... sport fighting cracks me up!
Why? Is it because you think those MA's (BJJ, Muay Thai, etc) are weak? Or is it because you think people who have to prove themselves are weak? Or something else?

LOL... sport fighting cracks me up!
You all have to remember who we are talking about here... it's Uki. The last time I made a MMA thread, he just spammed it full of meaningless babble that had nothing to do with the sport itself. Just pictures of himself doing push-ups and juggling balls. I think he even mentioned something about running a sword through me until I died, or something of that nature.
As for Barnett, that was a big letdown. This is the second time he has tested positive for steroids in MMA. I think he has just committed a possible career suicide.
They even canceled the PPV, which I was contemplating getting just to see Fedor. This was also Fedor's last contracted fight with the organization. Dana White has never been a Fedor supporter; however he said he would definitely be seeking Fedor's services to come to the UFC for a Lesnar vs. Fedor match. Fedor has said on numerous occasions he did not like the UFC because they do not broadcast in his country, Russia, among other personal reasons I am sure. I am curious to see if Fedor will fight in the UFC. Not because I think the UFC rules the MMA world, but I would like him to have his chance to silence the critics.
To be honest, I would love nothing more than to see Fedor beat Lesnar, and I honestly believe he can deal with Lesnar's brute strength style to win the fight. I would hope for a knockout, but then again would be happy with a win. I will keep reading and post any updates I may find.

What's funny is that in Jiujitsu, without tapping out or ref stoppage, those little "holds and locks" turn into broken bones. And you learn a great deal more than what you are permitted to use in competition. The arrogance people on the outside have in regards to it is astounding.
How many here have actually been locked in a kimora? I have, and I've done it to the person giving me a quick lesson. It barely takes ANY pressure to make someone cry out. This stuff is mechanics and leverage 101 for the human body. It works, and it works WELL.
Hell, a 9 year old KID, who had trained for all of TWO MONTHS, was able hold and restrain a violent Pit Bull who was attacking a girl and her dog for twenty minutes until the cops/animal control arrived.
I mean, to knock on this stuff is the height of ignorance.

Many of the exact same techniques samurai used have survived into Brazilian Jiujutsu.

Uh... in Gi Jiujutsu (self defense Jujutsu whose primary objective is NOT the ring) you learn, as I already stated, FAR more than what is allowed in the octagon. You simply adjust for the rules of the competition.
And, so you know, almost any of those little submissions TURN INTO BROKEN BONES if they are not willingly released by the person doing them, because the rules specify that anyone who taps the ground must be released.
Let me ask you this: how well can you fight with two broken arms?
Further, as I have pointed out, BJJ has been proven in real life situations.
Like I said earlier (and you failed to comment), a 9 year old kid restrained a vicious pit bull with a BJJ choke hold he learned in only two months of training. That's about as life and death as it gets.
The things you learn, leverage, the techincal issues of ground fighting, how to break bones, tendons, etc... I mean come on dude.
Again, when samuari lost their swords, Jujutsu is what they turned to. Brazilian Jiujutsu is the modern rendition, and in actual dojos, like I already said, you learn far more than what is permitted in the ring.
Observe a 15 year practitioner of Kung Fu get pwned by a Gracie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxeFRjwpaYQ
Fights in real life very often end up on the ground. Brazilian Juijitsu is a martial art that SPECIALIZES in the mechanics of ground fighting, grappling, etc. They have taken the intricacies of ground fighting to a level unprecedented in the history of martial arts. To sit here and say that these fundamentals are of no use in a real fight is ridiculous, to say the least.
EDIT- Another vid adds a subtle point here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkwCwFEPpQM&NR=1
In Judo rules, when you have your back pinned to the ground for 30 seconds, you lose the match. As the opponent lies on his stomach to prevent himself from being pinned, he forgot that Jiujitu's objective is not to score points, but to win the fight. Roice applies a choke, and the Judo competitor passes out in painless defeat.
This isn't hollywood crap dude. It's nitty gritty, but deceptively technical, grappling and ground fighting.
True, the MMA you see on television is not exactly the same as pure Jiujitsu, but those guys do train in it enough. But again, if a 9 year old can defeat a pit bull after two months of training, they HAVE to be doing something right...

Lol. I'd take you up on it if I had more than only an exhibition class and weren't deathly poor.
But, to Kung fu's credit, a couple of really good Jiujitsu guys I know did actually say that if the Shoalin people complimented their style with Jiujitsu as a ground fighting addition that they would be extremely potent, because of the ridiculous level of conditioning and flexibility they achieve, and the fact that the stand up striking aspect of fighting is covered so well in it.
Regardless, Jujitsu works. It always has. Sure, it's true, that arts like Judo have turned into much more a sport than self defense method, but BJJ really hasn't. It is still about putting the opponent down.
Here is a vid from the 70s where some Karate practitioners were allowed to name the rules.

Details. Details or stfu.
EDIT- and to turn the tables, the shit you've said about Brazilian Jiujitsu, the single most successful martial art in the last 100 years in tested fighting (versus katas against invisible opponents) in fact reveals that you know zilch about the basic principles of the grappling arts. Maybe you do really train in legit Kung Fu. I won't question that. But I will point out to you that in any competition or battle situation that matters, Brazilian Jiujitsu has overwhelmingly been the victor. That cannot be coincidence. (EDIT- after all, it's entire premise is to negate or limit the advantages of most other martial arts, and the advantages of powerful strikers, by taking the fight to the ground)
Further, about your comments about "sport fighting." The shit you have said is fucking ridiculous. I personally know someone who does it- and it is far from fake or scripted or ineffective. What they are allowed to do in the ring is limited, yes. But these guys train rigorously. And the techniques they learn are quite effective in real combat situations. Again, just look at BJJ's track record.
Hell, unlike every other martial art I have ever seen, you CANNOT progress in rank in BJJ without proving it in a match. You have to beat someone in full contact/full resistance sparring to advance. Memorizing scripted movements in a kata is simply not an acceptable test for progression in this martial art.

Thought I would breathe some life into this awesome thread with Silva vs. Sonnen II upcoming.
Personally, I do not believe Sonnen has a chance this weekend. If it goes past the 2nd round, I will be suprised.
Thoughts?
MetalMilitia

Sonnen has lost 8 of his 11 total losses via sub, you'd think at some point he would learn. Among the 8, 4 of 'em were straight up armbar/triangles or a variation of both.
Been watching Silva since he was in pride/cage rage - and he's the favorite for a reason.
A lot of people picking Sonnen, most of who'm I guess are influenced by his smack talk. He may have been winning through 4 1/2 rounds in the first fight, but he also got finished out of nowhere. He was going to sleep and tapped - who cares if he was winning the other 23 minutes? Impressive - Yes, but Anderson's wrestling has always been the worst part of his game.
There's also credibility to the point of Silva being hurt in the first one. In his documentary 'like water' a rib injury is mentioned. Also in that same documentary pre-fight while training, he straight up tells Big Nog : "I will submit him for you". Sonnen had claimed that Silva got his black belt out of a McDonalds happy meal.
Him getting subbed after saying and knowing all that - Pure gold.
I expect TKO/SUB from Silva in round 2.
Sadly if he doesn't stuff the TD's - I'd give Sonnen a decent chance to grind 'em out - which would be likely pretty boring, but then we'd get a trilogy out of it right?
After all that, me PERSONALLY ; I hope Silva clowns him badly. Sonnen talking shit about his family went a little too far, hope he smashes his face in standing - and finishes 'em via sub again.

Yeah, I remember watching Sonnen in the WEC, and needless to say I wasn't very impressed. He has definitely stepped up his game since those days; however I do not believe it will even come close to being enough. He's already added a WWE component to his game with the trash talk, and as we know it sells fights. That's what the UFC is all about. If it wasn't for the trash talk; I don't honestly believe he would have made it past Bisping. I believe Bisping won that fight, and the judges got it wrong.
I read all of the same things about the injury and promise he made before their first fight. After all that's been said, I think Silva is basically going to take his pound of flesh literally with his stand-up. I can't decide if I would like to see another sub out of pure irony, or a brutal KO. I think I would be happy either way honestly. Then again, like you said ... If Silva hasn't improved his TD defense; then we could be in for a snoozer!

She understands lol. I actually missed the first UFC on FOX to take her out to dinner and whatnot, and she saw that it killed me not knowing what was happening. She has anime and weird stuff she can't miss - and I have the fights. Good to have understanding. :)
Either way I hate official predictions, but like I was speculating ; Silva TKO round 2. I don't think Chael is going to try and do much different - he was winning for 23 minutes, perhaps caught 'em off-guard - but now Silva will be ready. Please, please don't let Chael hold you down for 5 rounds and win some boring decision. Knock his head off or sub him - just shut him up either way. Let it be decisive.
