President Barack Obama came into office in January promising a new era of openness.

But now, like Bush before him, Obama is playing the national security card to hide details of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement being negotiated across the globe.

If ratified, leaked documents posted on WikiLeaks and other comments suggest the proposed trade accord would criminalize peer-to-peer file sharing, subject iPods to border searches and allow internet service providers to monitor their customers' communications.

The national security claim is stunning, given that the treaty negotiations have included the 27 member states of the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand, all of whom presumably have access to the "classified" information.

They get to decide whether or not to invade peoples privacy.

And they get to do it in private.

Prepare for the coming era...

I get to decide if politicians live or die. And i do it publicly.

Anything that overrides your freedom is a reason to draw your sword.

Well I don't own a sword but, anything that overrides what's supposed to be your freedom, yes draw it.

It was cute when all of Obama's fans thought he was really for change. It'll be a
sad day when everyone realizes he is just another politician...

We go from a currently classified treaty about protecting copywrites on the internet to Obama is going to tap your phones and listen to your internet conversations. Figures.

actually this is more about money than invasion of privacy. and they would only be going after 'high rollers' anyways. the day the gov't decides it wants to pick on you individually is farther away than you think - the infrastructure isn't in place yet.

but ... the foundations have been laid ...

as for my Obama optimism - I've still got it. I never expected miracles and am not disappointed by the 'normal' functioning of a gov't that was trying hard to become a police state not too long ago. you can't just change the direction of the machine - it has too much inertia for that. as of course Obama is a politician - if he weren't he wouldn't be President. I rather like to see it as, he's a smart and canny politician who knows how to pull strings instead of being installed in office like an advanced toilet.
