View Full Version : Scientists have developed a self-cooling beer can

Scientists have developed a self-cooling beer can that could be on shop shelves as early as this summer.
Scientists say the temperature of the drink drops to 3C in three minutes and stays cold for up to an hour.
They work on the same principle of evaporation that makes you feel cold when you step out of the shower.
The beer is surrounded by a watery gel which drains off when the bottom of the can is twisted. The bottom also contains an insulated heat-absorbing gizmo.
That makes the temperature of the liquid drop and creates a vacuum which should keep it cold for an hour.
Inventors Tempra Technology have signed a deal with the firm that makes cans for Britain's biggest brewer Bass, Heineken, Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser.
And they plan to put Instant Cool tins on the shelves in July.
Barney Guarino, boss of Florida-based Tempra, said: "It's brilliantly simple. There have been attempts before but we are not aware of a successful mass-produced self-chilling product. This is it. It's finally here."
He says the environment-friendly chiller will bump up the cost of each can by 10 to 20p but expects prices to drop as demand grows.
Mr Guarino added: "It's similar to what people pay at a vending machine compared to a supermarket. Our research shows they won't mind paying for this. It works and it's safe."
Proof there is a God after all. :grin

/me breaks out in tears

I've been waiting for this day for 20 long years! Although, it does sound expensive... I'd still like to see this first hand.

Science at it's finest!

. . . And I have found that you can AQUIRE a taste for "Budweiser". . .(note here, IT IS better in the brown-glass bottle as oppossed to the can. :yumyum:
. . . While I used to enjoy the quality of some 'euro' brews, I found many to be a little too 'stout' for my preference.

Why can't scientists be concentrating on important stuff. Cool beer, what a waste of time..

- - -What if it were possible to adapt this same technology in the use of cooling the "brain" of an accident or trauma victim, thus saving same from irreparable brain damage?
- - -What if the same technology could be adapted to the use of electronics or mechanical applications whereas it could quick-cool and secure same from critical over-heating?

- - -These are just a coupla examples. What may seem "stupid" to many upon the first glance, we thinkers and dreamers WORK with.

- - -The possibilities, Mary...The possibilities. . . :D

I'm not a big fan of Aussie beers. I can't really judge them all until I've tasted them all though.

I'll get back to you later..... :nudge:

I thought Fosters was ok. For a Lager.

Got to admit I am a Guinness Fan.
Rogue Morimoto Dark is pretty good too.

Guiness is good. I don't like Fosters, XXXX or VB. I don't mind Cascade though, but I'm not sure if that is an Aussie beer or not.

Coronas are good. Are they American?

Like the idea of the self cooling can.....but I don't like the idea a 12-pack might possibly be $15-$20....maybe I'm way off....

Also seeing some thoughts on good beer.....I'm a fan of our microbrews around here in Maine.....we have a few.....Shipyard, Geary's...also a nice brew out of Vermont.....Magic Hat.....great stuff!!

The Seattle area has alot of micro-brews. Red Hook is the first that comes to mind. It seems like alot of pubs are brewhouses. Some friends of mine and I get together about once a month at the Issaquah Brewhouse. They have been purchased by Rogue Brewery. The beer is awsome. They have an Imperial Stout that is a nitros feed. Boy is it potent. They make a great chocolate porter as well. Can you tell I like dark beers! :toast:
