The original Stanley Kubrick movie is amazing. I still cry at the ending every damn time. Nothing could top the original movie.

I love it to! I love the scene when his fellow slaves are all willing to die for him each in turn claiming to be Spartacus that is some loyalty. My only real gripe is that Spartacus is reported to have died in battle.
"According to Appian, "Spartacus was wounded in the thigh with a spear and sank upon his knee, holding his shield in front of him and contending in this way against his assailants until he and the great mass of those with him were surrounded and slain"; The body of Spartacus was not found."

That would have made a great scene in its own right.

Just watched the first episode. While the content was good...the series is shitty IMO.
At one point I heard "Fuck" and "Cunt" used about 12 times in les then 1 minute. Now I don't care about swearing to much. Heck you've seen me use it. But This is not set in modern times and hearing them say those words...THAT OFTEN in such quick succession totally blew the realism for me. Obviously its not 100% accurate of a series but we all know they weren't saying quote "Killing the fucking cunts!". Give me a break.
Eh. I may watch another episode. The silliness of the over done swearing is killing it for me.

Looked like that 300 movie, as far as the fight scenes. I watched it while I cleaned my guns, so I was not focused 100% on the show... but I did like the perfectly shaped breasts. I did not know Roman and barbarian ladies had such anatomically perfect breasts. I always assumed breast feeding your 10 children had the opposite effect on the anatomy.

We can only wish that'll be that cool.

I was going to blast you guys for nit-picking the awesome potential of such a show based off of stupid things. For all we know those swears were used just as frequently (or more) back then, especially by people like this.
And I'm sure there's always been nice tits around, otherwise men would have lost interest in them.
However, I've been known to stop watching a Medieval movie based on the music they were using because it was fitting to the times... So I guess I won't blast you for the nit-picks.

I know they use different words then. Cunt and fuck weren't around. I wouldn't of minded if they used at least terminology from then. But then I guess they would have had to use that same terminology for the whole show. The whole episode had more swearing then some R rated movies. Just made it feel to modern. But I did like it non the less now that I rewatched it.

You must be an expert on languages from ancient times.
Tell me, what words did they use back then? What are the Origins of "Cunt" and "Fuck" as curse words? They must have started somewhere, maybe it was back in good ol' Sparticus' time.

From what I studied they used other words. Today are words mean the same thing practically. Course they more or less had insults and such.

I'm fairly sure they're not talking "equivalent" words, they mean people back in whatever Jesus times probably didn't call each other "fucking cunts"... I think AssX is probably right about this one. But I still don't think it's a reason to nag a show.

I'm just kinda nerdy on some things. Like 300 obviously was based NOT on facts and on the novel. But even that could have been ruined by to much swearing. Just something about seeing people of that era say "That persian c*ck sucker is a f*cking c*nt!". It sounds so silly and off. Throws me back to reality. Kinda like if I seen a movie about the year 2500 and everyone was in space stations saying "Ist thou seen thy laser rifleth? Minest hasth gone missing!" It would be dumb as hell. Unless of course they were alien and maybe thats their native language.

they mean people back in whatever Jesus times probably didn't call each other "fucking cunts"...Of course they did. They just used their own colorful terms. They obviously did not speak english back then but the show IS IN english. It would be silly for the show to meaningfully translate(that is translate everything in a way that the intended audience relates to it) everything EXCEPT the cursing and insults.

You bring up a good point, DBA.
However, I still think that there's a line that they have to watch out for when translating "in a way that the intended audience relates to it", otherwise you'll have these ancient Greeks (or whatever they are) talking about people playing "tunes" or a thief "jacking" their gold coins. It'd just seem a bit off for these people to be talking like that eventhough people now-a-days would know exactly what they meant.
On the other hand, I still think that them swearing isn't an issue and I'm just responding to you for the sake of arguement. Are there any other more interesting topics, or should we keep going?

The word Fuck may not date back to the first century BCE, but it has been around since about the 8th century CE. That still makes it a very ancient word, not to mention one of the most popular words in the history of the world.
The F-bomb aside, I thought that it wasn't bad and I'll happily keep on watching. I have to admit that it isn't as immediately compelling as Rome was, but I think the characters will grow on me. I also think that the 300-style cinematography is an interesting way to depict battles.
I agree that the women looked way too perfect, given the period in which this is set, but at the same time, this is a highly stylized version of the story. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it ends completely different than the movie or the actual history of it. This is supposed to be entertainment, not a lesson in history.

may I remind the Nit Pickers;
This is a TV Series NOT a Documentary ...
however, to address the Profanity Issue ...
anyone who has seen Deadwood will know that the series dialog utilizes modern profanities - and people didn't really swear like that in the 1800's (and we know this because we have written records from that time and they spoke English and all that). HOWEVER, the 'profane terms' of the day would, if directly translated, seem Trite, Quaint and Silly as Hell when used against the backdrop of brutality and hard living that made up the world of Deadwood. so the writers chose to utilize Modern Profanities used In Context to what the characters would have likely said under the circumstances.
Consarnit, Dadgummit and other 'folksy' terms were once considered Profanity. to say, "Damn," in some circles was worse than saying Fuck in a Church today. so the times changed and our perception of 'strong language' shifted with it.
Old fashioned cursing in other languages would sound completely fucked up and stupid to us today. a classic and still current example of this is the Quebecois curse 'Tabernaque' (pronounced Tah-Bur-nack). it is considered a profanity, especially if you use the full version which is, "Mojeux de Tabernac Estee," or something like that (spell check please).
the Literal translation of that Foul and Horrid Profanity is 'Tabernacle.'
I think that gives the best explanation/example of WHY they dialogued the script with modern, current profanity ...
"Temple House of Ill Repute! Thou hast taken thy Copulating Draft Animal and withered it to the state of being Incontinent, vast Varlet thou art!"
I think I'd prefer to hear the character say, "Fuck you and the horse you rode in on," myself ...
