Caught this on my local news channel's website. Apparently, this thing is lurking around central Maryland.

Now that's cool. It definitely looks like its a hyena hybrid of some sort. The oversized jaws and the mane down its back.

Any stories about animals getting loose from the zoo?

a hyena isnt too common of a house pet though....Wasn't there a huge snake and Tiger found in an appartment in New York City? A hyena may be an uncommon pet but I bet someone would try to keep one.

It doesn't look like your average hyena to me. They even have a name for it, a hyote.

. . .Sure as hell looks like a displaced Hyena to me. And it is plausible; oftentimes 'well-meaning' peoples do displace animals from their natural habitat in an attempt to 'domesticate' them. (though in doing so, it has also been noted that in many cases these animals displaced from the wild actually begin to loose their more natural appearance [stripes/spots/colouration] and then it becomes increasingly difficult to link them 'species wise'). . .
. . .Thusly the animal becomes 'mistaken' as an 'unknown'. When I was about 13 years old, I actually knew an individual (an older man in his 50's who lived with his son of 20-something, THEY actually housed a full-grown male African lion in their garage; they fed it on a diet of 'dogfood'. Anywho, to make a long story short, the lion was taken by the Animal Protective League after sedation, and then "donated" to the Zoo.
. . .Gotta go with VR on this one; The 'first' PIC I saw of the beast had me a little fooled as well, Stewey, in the way that it could have been a 'wild Boar', though the rest of the body-structure is all wrong. Would be stockier/stouter. My guess is that the animal had his head slightly tilted to the left which gives the appearance of greater girth neck-to-lower jaw, though also lacking 'tusks'. The 'mane' that rides along the top of the neckline skull-to-back is a dead giveaway for a hyena.
. . .As well, Wild Boars are vicious, dangerous creatures (when angered) and I would think would not be as 'amicable' with the local domestic animals there as this one appears to be from the story accounts. . .

Another, supposedly different mystery creature has been spotted, coincidentally enough in Maryland again.

Here's the link...http://www.themilwaukeechannel.com/news/3558739/detail.html

Anyone notice how long the creature's hind legs are? I don't think that's normal for even a hyena.

They should try capturing it and doing tests, then releasing it, to find out what it is. It could be a new animal, but I would not rule out it just being an oddity or hybrid of known creature(s).

"It looked like something out of Lord of The Rings." Haha. *hears lord of the rings battle theme tuning in*

Nah stewey. It needs to pose as a threat to people if that were to happen.

Ok, imo the first one they saw, is a fox. The second one found in Texas looks like a kangaroo with its tail cut off. Thoughts?

I'm leaning that way myself ( tasmanian tiger), but it tends to make me ask, "How the hell did it get there?!?"

Hey, im from MD. They almost caught it and they are pretty sure that it is just a fox with skin disease. Or they are way off and it is something else.
