:po: I just watched a program titled "Silent Storm" on SBS Storyline and was shocked to learn that all of Australia was contaminated by radioactive fallout in the 1950s and early 1960s during the nuclear weapons tests at Maralinga in South Australia and off the coast of Western Australia.

Our milk supply was contaminated by Strontium 90 which is subsequently taken up in the bones of our bodies. This radioactive substance from fallout is a major threat to Australians and is responsible for many types of cancers such as leukemia found in many children today.

It is sad to know that the whole country has been contaminated to some degree from these tests. I remember my days at school when it was compulsory for us to drink a small bottle of milk each day. That was back in the late 60s and 70s when I was real young, not long after these atmospheric tests, and I wonder if I too have absorbed some strontium 90 over time. Its truly a sad state of affairs when control freaks ruin it for everybody else.....

I was in the MIDDLE of the path followed by the fallout from Chernobyl...

Eating spinach was discouraged for 6 months and all milk went down the drain. Yeah, of course you got some of it! I did too! We will be wondering if it has any effect on us untill we die. Hopefully of old age.

That had to have been a frightening scenario for too many years. I hope for the best health for you all. :(

Yeah, well...

We're talking 1986 here, the fallout cloud made a large turn around a pressure system, and ruined crops in Russia, Poland, Norway, Holland and Belgium. Most of it was Cesium and due to the fine weather in spring and summer, it did not get washed into the soil by rain for some time.

I remember quite distinctly, because that year my wife and I went to Hungary for the first time, and we were anxious to find out if it was "safe" (Hungary is of course much closer to Kiev than the Netherlands). What we found out was that in fact it was a lot safer to be in Hungary than in Holland...

What scared me most about it all, was the invisibility of the danger...
