Howdy,

Given the riots in London and other worldwide cities, I have begun thinking about prepping for potential rioting in the U.S. -- especially since some foundations for this are already here (flash mobs, etc.).

What tactics are best for protecting yourself (in urban/suburban settings)? How about a crowd of 10 vs 50 vs 200? This is different from typical PAW prepping... the rioters may not be looking for your canned goods or ammo... they'll have different intents.

What to have on hand? What actions to take given different scenarios that may play out?

If the crowd is a bunch of pussy types like the thugs in the UK, then I would think a few dead assholes would scatter the rest and end any major rioting in progress. A hard crackdown usually is enough to put a fairly docile populace in their place. If the crowd is influenced by other factors, such as famine, disease, etc, and is armed, then you need to rethink this plan. I would think it all depends on training, as 10 trained and armed people working as a team is far more effectiver than 100 or even 200 unorganized and ununified armed assholes. If the crowd is armed and organized, then you are in a shitstorm.

In an urban area, you would need to have far more firepower available to you as far as magazine capacity goes, and the heavier rounds would likely not be as effective as you would like to have them be. Urban fighting were shots are under 75 yards would benefit from pistol caliber carbines. The one that pops into mind as perhaps an excellent weapon for this environment is either the FN P90 or AR 57, or even the PPS41. These firearms hold large amounts of ammo that is not long range capable stuff, but performs excellent at short range.

An AR 15 with a pair of beta c magz would be nice as well, and so would an AK 47 with a few 75 round drum magazines.

Guns to perhaps avoid would be bolt action rifles, heavy main battle rifles like the M1 Garand, H&K 91, FN FAL, and M14.

Shotguns would be great to have, especially if you have the proper loads. Some of the newer buck and slug rounds might pack the proper punch for scattering crowds.

Having plastic wire ties on hand to detain assholes might be a good thing, although you need to be sure about the legal ramifications.

Baseball bats are great, as the aluminum ones are very light but could knock some sense into assholes.

Having a type of water pump on hand that can be used when the grid is down might be valuable, as would water.

wasp spray is better then mace... Has a 20 foot range typically. Sticks real well...

OR

If it is the riot cops your after you'd want to go biological.... only insects that can get in those nooks and cranies inside their ninja turtle suits. Ant mounds, wasp nests, spider boxes anything with a small bug that bites that can fit into the cracks of a turtle suit.

And napalm, and gasoline and diesel, and many other flammable liquids.

It's difficult to shoot when your hair is on fire and your ass is catching fire.

Or simply go to the novelty store and buy a few thousand packs of itching powder

If I had the space. I would probably go old style and dig a lake around my house with one of those old fashioned bridges you can close and open.

If a mob was trying to smash into your home or your family-owned convenience store here in Britain and you mowed them all down with a machine gun, you'd be arrested and get a life sentence, that's how the wacky law works in Britain.
Anyway the scenario is academic because law-abiding citizens aren't allowed to own firearms of any kind here for home defence (except farmers who can own shotguns), so you'd be at the mercy of any mob.

The famous Tony Martin case-

He got life for shooting a burglar dead but was released after 3 years because of overwhelming support of the Brit public for him.

PS- i just remembered I saw a vid on the net of a US store owner shooting an armed robber dead and he got a heavy jail sentence, so maybe the American courts are going wacko too..

Don't forget to add the giant crocodiles.

It can depend on the circumstances of the shooting here in the US. If someone breaks into your residence and you shoot them as they are fleeing, then that is considered unlawful. There are so many protections granted the perps that there are entire books on legal protection for gunowners and pretty much anyone and everyone else as well. Victims rights have been morphed into criminal's rights.

The best preparation is not to be near a riot. Stay away from umm, "ethnic" neighborhoods and any shopping areas that might attract looters. If they come to your neighborhood the best policy is to have a group of armed men scare them off without firing shots if possible. The police are as much your enemy as the rioters in this situation.
So, good neighborhood away from shopping areas, a neighborhood watch program that can be turned into a militia, and a shotgun/rifle that you hope you never have to use.

Course' a few well placed .12 guage flare rounds IMO would be rather disturbing to a mob as well.

Perhaps, but if an angry crowd sees grey matter from fellow lawless types on their clothes, the crowd would likely disperse. Sometimes the best measure to counter force is with a bit of your own... and I am not preaching to oldsoldier and many others, as I think they already know this. This comment is directed towards the types who want to understand why the rioters are rioting before the rioting is squashed.

Exactly, plus maybe toss in a little scorched human flesh just for the fun of watching them jump. Yeah I know I'm a sick puppy
