Java updated?

I ran unbuntu for awhile and had issues from time to time also.

I am completely unfamiliar with Linux, but since the chat runs on Java I would start there, making sure you're using the most updated version. If you are up to date with Java let me know and I can look at the chat's developer FAQs to see if anyone else using Linux runs into problems.

I've never had cause to run a Linux machine, so I've never learned the operating system. Thus, I am unfamiliar with it.

I've never had cause to run a Linux machine, so I've never learned the operating system. Thus, I am unfamiliar with it.i had an XP virus that was virtually impossible to get rid of... took the puter to the shop, came back basically the same(after the 120 dollar fee of course), then a friend of mine took the puter and said that the only way to get rid of the virus was to wipe clean the hard drive and put a new operating system on it... he said linux was free and much better than windows and since like 80% of the worlds computers run on windows, the amount of viruses for linux is next to nil... so when he gzve the puter back it was like brand spanking new and i haven't had any probs yet except i can't get into java chats, but i haven't really went thru all the 31,000+ free apps that linux offers either... it's really cool and i will not go back to microsoft ever... i am fascinated by the sheer customability of the system and the amount of free downloads for it.

Although it applies to Red Hat and SUSE, the following link may very well solve your problem. It walks you through the steps. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml. If that doesn't work, you may require a more complicated process, which can be found here: http://jdk-distros.java.net/ubuntu.html.

Perhaps this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java) is what you are looking for?

Uki, windows is by no means a virus. It's just another badly written operating system. Granted, it's filled with bloatware, does a lot the unpractical and inefficient way, is expensive, built by a convicted monopolist, self-destructs over time and is closed source.

However, every linux distribution comes with it's own custom made can of worms which you will run into sooner or later. Solid piece of advice: visit the ubuntu forums when you need advice on ubuntu. It's overhere (http://ubuntuforums.org/).

I have used gentoo linux for a few years (had a bumpy path before I arrived there). At the moment I'm on a windows 7 laptop (acer) and find no need to switch.

That being said, when the time comes for a fresh reinstall, I'll probably find myself installing gentoo linux again.
