Anyone seen or heard anything about this?
Asteroid VW 14, I came across this during my surfings of the net. Seems like something this close this big would have more news about it. The chart shows the size and distance of miss for the NEO's the highlighted one is obviously VW 14. Looking at the chart you will see that VW 14 is the closest one, the next closest miss being 17.9

The pictures after are from the jpl/nasa site java orbit simulation program.
Here is the location of the asteroid as of today Dec 10th.

and on Dec 24th
http://img110.exs.cx/img110/1919/dec249im.gif
As you can see December 24th is the closest it will be. at 0.0131AU away from us.HERE (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/db?name=2004+VW14) is the link to the program, you can go forward or back in dates to see the path of this thing, it moves in an orbit that crosses ours at least twice a year every couple of years or so, and it looks as if its orbit is becomming tighter.
Does anyone have anymore info about this?

Good find Raven! I havn't heard anything about it my self but then again I havn't heard much about anything these days...
Wow It is going to be close cosmically speaking...

Gotta wonder if we'd hear about the big one at all. :headbang:

I think because it has been tracked and will still miss the Earth by a generous 1.9 million km or so, it's not really considered anything major. The moon by comparison is about 385 000 km away, so even though it is a close shave in astronomical terms, it's not close enough to warrant the typical doomsday scariness factor.

I agree totally, if there is one that 'has' been discovered which will collide with Earth, they probably won't tell the general population untill the very last moment or not at all.

They can track these objects with very high accuracy AT, so I don't think it will ever 'become' a threat unless it maybe collides with something big enough to alter its' course(very very unlikely).
I'm not too sure how far ahead in time they run these simulations either, so it's not to say that it might not pose a threat in the far future.

Remember all the hoopla about asteroid Toutatis, everyone was screamin this could be the one, but as predicted it made the usual flyby without any harm at all. I dare say this one will be the same.

that program is usable with all of the objects being tracked on that site, i ran that java up to 2175, it would have kept going if i hadnt gotten bored with it lol. its an interesting little program they have.
As far as it not being that close, its close enough, and closer than any of the others on there so far.
I doubt the population would get any advance notice, wtf would we do if we were told? Riots would be pointless as anything one would get would be pretty useless. The religious ppl would be out in full force and there wouldnt be enough churches on the planet to hold all of the ppl wanting to be "saved" before they die. There would be no point in having a bomb shelter type area because the planet would be ruined for quite a fair bit longer than any rations could hold out.

1 Astronomical Unit = 92 955 887.6 miles
0.0131 AU = 1,257,022 miles.
Mean Distance of Moon from Earth - 238,712 miles.
This rock will pass us at a distance of five times our distance to the moon.
By cosmic definitions this could be called "close". I wouldn't want to walk it, though... :smokin:

your last post got me thinking Raven, wtf would or could we do, absolute squat is what i came up with, though you wouldn't find me wasting my last days/moments running to some holy place, as if the God would say "oh well you said you didn't believe in me for most of your life, but i guess these seconds make up for it"
So again i have no idea what i would do, try and say goodbye to everyone i love/know i think, try and make peace with those that i haven't seen eye to eye with i guess.
hmm....again ya really got me thinking there
PS - i went back as far as 2200 on the program thingy (it goes no further) and this christmas is the closest its gonna come for a long while,
haha, maybe jesus will jump from it to earth on the 25th?
does sound a bit religion related now that i think of it haha, the birth of jesus, hmm

. . .My guess is that it's "Santa Claus". . .Yup. Him and his 8 tiny reindeer (9 if yah count Rudolph). In light of this development, here's my Christmas "wish list":
1. World Peace.
2. Kofi Annan's seat @ the United Nations. (I fuq'n *GUARANTEE* it'll NEVER be the SAME!)
3. 2005 Ford Mustang (Cobalt Blue) with all the gimmicks
4. 1 Million Dollars tax-free (I'm not greedy)
. . .They say money isn't everything. Give me the million and let me make-up my own mind. . . ::)):

I am sure someone here who is smarter than I am will have more info on this...
I heard on the radio about a program called Deep Impact. The idea is to send a spaceship to crashland on an asteroid/comet/wtf is comming at us. To create an impact to bust the thing up. Theoretically the first launch is scheduled for January 2005... Then again this story could be all hooey! I'll do some looking to see if I can find anything more.....

Just supposing...
We keep having these discussions as an "Asteroid" of "Comet" hitting the Earth.
What if the Moon is what gets hit...

Two answers in one post...
- No, the comet won't get blown off course. It's a relatively small impact on a big rock.
- Did you ever take a good look at the moon?!? It's been hit by space rocks a LOT over the last billions of years. It's still there.

Relax, These things have been happening for a long long time. Before we could gaze into the skies with our high powered telescopes and were able to plot the course of anything out there. The main difference here is that we can now see whats out there. In some cases, Ignorance is bliss.
*spell check is down, You have to adlib my misspellings.
Toutaris, VW14, and many others have passed us at there closest more then a few times already is my opinion. Only we never knew it.
