Russian Lawmakers Targets Jewish Groups

MOSCOW - A group of nationalist Russian lawmakers called Monday for a sweeping investigation aimed at outlawing all Jewish organizations and punishing officials who support them, accusing Jews of fomenting ethnic hatred and saying they provoke anti-Semitism.

Neo-Nazism in Russia
Russia may seem like an unlikely place for a flowering of neo-Nazi movements due to the strong memories of the devastation that was wrought on the nation by the Nazi German invaders during World War II. Nevertheless, the post-Soviet era has seen the rise of a variety of extremist nationalist political movements, some of them paramilitary organizations of openly neo-Fascist or neo-Nazi persuasion. These organizations are characterized by extreme xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and an active interest among a few of these groups in overthrowing the government and taking power by force. As of 2004, the Russian neo-Nazis constitute one of the greatest potential threats to the political and social stability in Russia. Whereas Vladimir Putin's government seems to keep them in check, if the economic and social conditions in the country deteriorate significantly in the future, an attempted neo-Nazi rebellion could well be on the horizon.

Ridiculous. You might as well say that ALL Arab states are Nazi states... And Germany (neo-nazism on the rise there swiftly, since the wall fell), and Holland, and on and on and on...

Sheer hate-mongering.

Sheer hate-mongering...against who, the nazis? You're right/ They're not so bad, just misunderstood...
I'm not sure what's so ridiculous about it, it questions the unstability of the russian government and the rise of neo-nazism in Russia which it's party already has 250 000 members if I remember correctly and it's expected to grow. Also with the rise of islamic extremism, it wouldn't be surprising.

The neo-Nazis made it an explicit goal to take over the country by force, and they did put in serious effort into preparing for this. The paramilitary organizations operating under guise of sports clubs organized training for their members in squad tactics and weapons handling. Weapons were stockpiled, generally illegally (due to very restrictive Russian gun laws) (Note: These gun laws were, and still are, for most part ignored. This is evidenced by the ease of which the Russian Mafia can obtain guns, especially Ak-47s.) Reputedly, many were interested in martial arts and unarmed combat, and did a good job organizing realistic hand-to-hand combat classes. Despite these extensive preparations, quite incredible by the standards of a Western nation, the neo-Nazis have not yet carried out any well-known attacks or otherwise come out into the open.

Doesn't seem so ridiculous. Of course it doesn't seem reasonable that they would come into power, this scenario seems more to the core of the problem:

The Russian police and security establishment has generally turned a blind eye to the activities of the neo-Nazis. In a country where the law enforcement is essentially unaccountable to anybody, shutting down such openly treasonous and illegal activities would not have been hard, were there political will to do so. The failure of the government to do so suggests that the officials are either apathetic, sympathetic to the movement, or intending to use it for their own purposes. The latter seems particularly likely for the higher level officials of the FSB (a successor to the Soviet KGB), some of whom may view the neo-Nazi paramilitary groups as a potential tool in a future struggle for power, whether as storm-troopers of a revolution or as an easy to unleash threat to the constitutional order that may require and justify imposition of state of emergency and military rule.

Arab states as nazi states? Didn't realize they believed in that ideology. That or bad sarcasm is lost on me.

Maybe we're onto something. Maybe every government in the world is heading towards Nazism. Maybe one day every nation will unite under Nazi rule. :nudge:

There are hate groups in every country. Labeling Russia as Nazi because there are some anti-Jewish groups is just stupid.

You're right it would be stupid to label it that, hence why no one had. The title of the post is in the form of a question, hypothetical one at that. It's also not the fact of making a basis of what's going on now but what could possibly go on. Hence fourth, as the article states with the reportedly weapons and training they've undertaken and the growing instability of the russian government combined with the rise of islamic extremism, it's not an very unlikely scenario. As I've already pointed out more clearly in an above post.

Wish people would properly read through threads before shooting off their one-liners. Makes one look like less of an ass. Friendly advice:)

My point being: why point a finger? ..and at the EU?!? It's an economic pact, for crying out loud... Do you really think I would feel ANY kinship with Italy for instance?!? You Americans have so LITTLE knowledge of Europeans...
