Mount Talang - a volcano 25 miles east of Padang City, about the midpoint north/south on the isle of Sumatra, erupted. This volcano has erupted several times in the last century.

The following Yahoo News article has the details...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1530&ncid=731&e=7&u=/afp/20050412/wl_asia_afp/indonesiavolcano

This eruption follows mere days after the 6.7 magnitude quake that shook the region. Interestingly, and more ominously, a Sumatran government geophysicist in the article links the Boxing Day quake to new activity in Leuser Mountain in Aceh Province, and he says that the Day after Easter quake has "sparked activity in Lake Toba"

The last remark is extremely interesting... I've read nothing about activity in the Toba region. I'd read an article a few weeks ago, where a geologist speculated the quakes might resurrect Toba... is this actually happening?

. . .Thank-You, btw, for posting that story; I got pretty much the same from this LINK here:

(I hadda pop-in and do an edit: Here I am welcoming you and you've been here almost a year -w- only twelve posts to your name as I make this entry. . .Where yah been? . . .Though it's cool. Stick around, 'cause things can really start to move news-wise sometimes when yah ain't around!)

No need for apologies - I don't post very often, though I do regularly lurk here.

The Sify article was much the same as the Yahoo article - the Yahoo article, however, had significant information on the links between the three seismic events since 12/26/04 and new volcanic activity. What I am particularly interested in was the reference by the Sumatran Geophysist to "activity in Lake Toba" Does anyone know what type of activity is taking place? Is it abnormal, or more activity than is normal for the Toba region? I was under the impression that Toba was virtually quiesscent since the last great eruption 70,000 years ago. Sudden increases in activity could be nothing, or they could be significant.

Is Toba a supervolcano?

Is Toba a supervolcano?
Yes.
It's sometimes called Yellowstone's big sister.

The largest of the three Yellowstone eruptions was estimated ~2500 km3. The last Yellowstone eruption was ~1000 km3.
Toba erupted over 2800 km3 the last time around (74,000 years ago).

So how much ash causes how much cooling?

How big of a blast causes how much trouble?

Anyone seen any stats

(assuming stratovolcano)
