ok, i'm just here to ask a question. what is the point of the Auto-Bahn in germany? and if they keep having major terrible accidents, why don't they take it away? :2thumbs:

in my opinion, the AutoBahn is a Darwinian selection process. The stupid and reckless die, the lucky and smart live and some collateral damage is always present.
anyone who wants to drive like a complete asshole should have the right to do so, what they shouldn't have is access to police, medical or fire support teams. you wanna roll those dice, you pay the price.
we live in a world where Gov't's are asked to assume responsibility for the stupidity of their citizenry ... is it any wonder others think we're going to hell?

What the US Inter-State system was suppose to be. A fast way to get to point A to B directly without stop signs, lights, pedestrians, etc. The AutoBahn is for high speed traval and was and occasionlly still racing and experimenting. They have big accidents but probably less of them than on our own systems. When you drive fast, your concentrating on what your doing. Not like a distracted double blond bimbo, cellphone talking, drowsy, power puffing, zombie not going fast enough for an even impact by natural selection. Usually.
Interesting Link about it: http://home.att.net/~texhwyman/autobahn.htm

First off, Mez and Rasher ... Are you jealous that you guys can't drive like that where you live, or is this always the way you guys start a thread? ... Zeezes!
Read the link!!
... Despite the general high speeds, the accident and death rate on the Autobahn is relatively low. Autobahn crashes account for only 10% of national traffic fatalities and, in fact, the fatality rate is lower on the Autobahn than on US Interstates.
And ...
... However, if you exceed the recommended limit and are involved in an accident, you could be responsible for some of the damage costs even if you are not at fault.
Happy now ???
I used to drive the AutoBahn a lot when I went to Italy/Austria/Tjech Republik. The German people are very good drivers you know, when there's a speed limit off let's say 100 km/h, you'll see only tourists driving faster, and you can be sure the cops are around the corner!
There are times that I drove up to 230 km/h, the experience is incredible ... you're in another state of mind, more focused, more "aware". I can tell you Americans not to attempt to drive the AutoBahn without some practice. You'll crash and die swiftly..... :grin
A drivers license is very expensive in Germany (I think it's at 2000 euro right now) and test are not easy, for example, to pass your license you must prove that you can handle a car on the German Highway at 200 km/h ... hehehe.
Last time on the AutoBahn I did +/- 900km in Germany, by Bike, a BMW R1100GS. average speed off 170 km/h (on the fast parts). Now this is even more insane, imagine yourself driving at 160-170 in second lane and want to pass a slower driver... you look into the mirror (who's trembeling due to engine and wind) and see "something " approaching in 3rd lane but can't determine at what speed it's coming. So you have to let go one hand off the handle bar and look behind you. The time you do that, that "something" flies you by like you where standing still....... :headbang: makes you think very hard before attempting the fast lane, it's not a game.
Bottom line, if you can't handle it, stay away from the 3rd lane.
PS : someone heard about the Isle of Man? British Island where there are only speed limits in towns, outside of that, speed limit is xxx. What about that?

Well they wanted a fast highway to travel, without wasting time with the traffic lights and so on. I used to live in Germany lived there for 5 years, been on tons of autobahns, and i hate to say this, I am american, but most of the accidents were caused by the soilders, americans! Apparently we can't drive for crap. I see it everyday when i go out driving, people here don't even have a clue about what to do at a four way stop sign. It's very easy.
Anyhow, the germans go to driving school for a year, they have over 100 signs to learn, and they do not get their license until they pass everything with flying colors, I knew a lot of germans and they told me how their driving school is very hard. We should pride in our driving schools as well, since we cause most of the accidents over there. So it's not them it's us, I hav e surivived the auto bahn though! :) Those are my 2 cents!

Heh, Americans get (yes, they're practically "given" to you) a drivers license at 16 - we think THAT is ridiculous. Here in Europe it's 18, but hardly anyone gets it at that age, because almost everyone fails the examn at least 2 times..
In other words, you only get to "hit the road" when they're certain you know how to drive.
In the 27 years I have been driving, I've had my share of "autobahn"... Both on my motorcycle (yihaaaa, Mac!!) and in my car. I have NEVER seen an accident. Most accidents happen in the city and secondary roads anyway.

The only thing good to come out of a car is either your drug dealer or a call girl, everything else about motor vehicles is a perversion of technology...and anyone who thinks they have a 'right' to own or operate a motor vehicle is going to a Very special level of Hell...or they're going to Nascar Heaven where Kyle Petty chooses the music and Dale Earnhardt picks the menu. I'd rather be the proud owner of a motorcycle than the proud owner of a gun.
I NEVER said anything about guns, but anyways...
a gun has a limited number of bullets which apply directed and very specific kinetic force.
Poluution doesn't give a flying fuck about any limitations, it just tends to spread and accumulate.
I don't own either a gun or a petrol burning piece of mechanical penis extension, motorcycles are simply a grander form of "Isn't my Ego Tiny" over-compensation (since we've gotten into flying assumptions I'll make a few of my own)
ANYONE WHO DEFENDS OWNING A PETROL BURNING MOTOR VEHICLE FOR PERSONAL USE IS A USELESS NEUROTIC WHO'S PERCIEVED LACK OF MANHOOD HAS FORCED THEM INTO SUBSTITUTING A POISON BELCHING COLLECTION OF PARTS TO MAKE THEM SEEM SOMEHOW BIGER IN THEIR SAD AND USELESS WORLD.
How'z Dat For Assumptions?
I'd rather not kill anyone at all, but if I had to, I'd rather have to kill one person than hundreds (this is the difference between guns and motor vehicles)...

Sorry for the phrasing, English is not my native language. I think you misunderstood. By drive like that I don't mean driving like an idiot, I mean driving on a hihgway built for it, with skilled drivers driving by the same code. Maybe I didn't make myself clear again, but hey...

If we would have the choice, I'd drive a non-polluting bike or car, really, but we don't yet, and you sir, are absolutely right about that! I applaud your dedication to the matter, I really do! But I would really begin screaming and shouting when you would invent something as a clean fuel or engine or wathever that is usable to everyone starting tomorrow.... no, I would fall to your feet...
It will probably be this side of the ocean who will change to clean fuel first.
The only thing good to come out of a car is either your drug dealer or a call girl, everything else about motor vehicles is a perversion of technology... .
Well, my drugdealer is my callgirl's pimp aswell, so at least that saves a ride...

Any info on that Very special level of Hell?? Lotta curbs over there?? Nascar is so dull .... Chill man, I'm just jokin'..
Let me tell you why I responded like that : Read the first two posts, and then think about where this thread is posted? .... Capice?
You should start a new thread about pollution, put links to charts, info and the likes... Keep it interesting enough and maybe you'll change a lot of AO members into less-poluting citizens of our beautiful planet earth. I mean it!
Nice one to :
I'd rather not kill anyone at all, but if I had to, I'd rather have to kill one person than hundreds (this is the difference between guns and motor vehicles)...
So this is not an asumption, ok!
So this isn't one either :
Given we had the choice, I see it like this : Per combustible engine someone owns (all over this entire planet), a bullet is given in exchange, you can choose 1 person per bullet to die.... Shit man, we just found ourselves a new armageddon topic!!!

it happened because there are some who believe that Priviledges are actually Rights.
white bread thinking for white bread fantasies (I'm in Love With My Car ...)
and I sometimes respond agressively because I'm wired that way - But it does not change the fact that Privately Owned Motor Vehicles are the main cause of the world's pollution and health problems (overall, lookit the stats) - yet we pay less attention to them than we do 'second hand smoke' or kids listening to rap.
I'm not telling people not to drive, just reminding them of the cost - and since the second hand smoke Nazi's can dictate terms to the general public I figure EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET can dictate whatever the fuck they feel like about motor vehicles to those who own and operate them.
Alternatives? FUCKING WALK!! And don't tell me, "I need this to survive, I need this for work..." because your goddamned Great Grandparents got by without them. And hard as it may be for soft, chair bound, pear shaped rich white folk to understand or comprehend, it is Possible to live a life without need of Private Ownership of a Motor Vehicle (read this carefully for proper context). But for the sake of CONVENIENCE the 'richers' Choose to live in thrall to their metal beasts - it takes way too much work to do things for one's self when the Machine can do it for us...
At the same time that the World Health Organization is going on about obesity levels in the 1st World countries this debate also rages. Alternatives? FUCKING WALK!! And don't tell me, "I need this to survive, I need this for work..." because your goddamned Great Grandparents got by without them.Well Mez... What can I say to that. If my megara existence would cost me the same as my great grandparents existence in Germany then I might be able to get by with out the use of my car. If there were a job available close to my home that would cover my bills then I would certainly prefer to walk to work. However that is not the case here. My job entails covering a territory of over 50 miles. So I have to use a company car to get the job done.
Here in the Seattle area we USED to have much better public transportation. Then some jerk with political aspirations got a petition introduced that would cut the state income from licensing cars. This passed and caused the government to find ways to cut government spending. They in their infinite wisdom cut the public transportation services as well as many other services.
When it came time to replace my car I would have loved to purchase a hybrid. Again it is WAY too expensive to afford. Mez I really appriceate the passion in which you express your feelings on the topic of pollution from combustion engines. Someday when I can afford it I will trade in my car for something more eco friendly.
BUT... this is a thread about driving on the AutoBahn. I have only been on the AutoBahn as a very little kid and had no concept of what it was (And I wasn't driving!!!). So on this topic I really have nothing to contribute. Although it is interesting to hear from those who actually drive on the AutoBahn about what it is like.

No I don't think so. I live 19 miles from work. Walking at an average of 2 miles an hour I get there in 9 1/2 hours. Work 8 hours and walk back in another 9 1/2 hours. When do I sleep? :amaz: I am in the next day by then! And no I can't afford a house closer in.
The world has changed quite a bit since my Great Grandparents were alive.
I require a moving object to get me were I need go and have time to myself at the end of the day. This object must hurdle my butt up to a least 60mph.
Until the world presents me with something equal to, enjoyable and affordable to my internal combustion engine appliances, then I'll retire them and use it on the AutoBahn.

No worries, I like a good laugh..
A little something on myself :
I go to work every day on foot, I have no car, only a motorcycle. I do my shoppings on foot, as everything I need is in walking distance of my door. I like to take a walk in the forest, and go there by bike (other possibility is the bus). When I go see my girl (about 50km from here), I go by train if the next day I don't have to work; if so, I go by bike.
I love camping outdoors, and when I do, I go by bike, take long walks, do a little fishing for the bbq, love to play petanque, have a good dinner and drink, but I also love to drive our Ardens roads, lotta curves, nice little places to visit .... That's nearly impossible by public transport over there, sooo.... You see I'm not the poluting SOMonkey you think I am. Give me the choice between a combustible engine or a clean engine, at same price and performance, (may even be a bit more expensive), I'll choose the clean one, no doubt. I'l only miss the terrible roar of my 2-stroke 1100cc Boxerengine on steroids!

Not to mention....
Transport
Petrol and diesel are probably the first things that spring to mind when one thinks of the uses of oil. Because of its liquid nature and the power/mass ratio, there is nothing else that can easily replace oil. Cars can be adjusted to run on electricity or hydrogen but these are wasteful of energy and unsuited to the future. Road transport can replaced to a certain extent with public transport and oils from plants, and ships could reduce their energy usage by modern sails. The biggest problem is with aircraft which cannot use alternatives like electricity. Along with their excessive consumption, this will be one of the first to be cut back.
page break
Electricity Generation
About 42% of primary energy (oil, natural gas, coal) is used to generate electricity and if oil is our society’s lifeblood, then electricity is its oxygen. As seen by the blackouts in east USA and Canada in August 2003, even a few days without electricity and we grind to a halt. There are alternative ways of generating electricity but these make up only a small amount of electricity sources at the moment (see Chart S1), over three-quarters comes from oil, gas and coal. Hydroelectric is limited by availability of water and nuclear power is out of favour. The only option left is renewables and these are many years away from being developed enough. We should have been pouring money into research in the 1970s and 1980s.
page break
Farming
One important use for oil which many people are unaware of is agriculture, and not just to fuel tractors and combine harvesters. Fertilisers and herbicides are oil- and gas-based, and farmers use animal feeds that come from around the world.
The example of North Korea shows us what happens to agriculture when oil products are removed. After the Korean war, it had developed a modern farming system depending on machinery and oil-based fertilisers. After the Soviet Union fell, Communist aid to the country stopped and they were unable to purchase oil and supplies. Without oil, farm machinery was sitting idle (80% of its capacity by 1998) and large proportions of the people had to return to the agriculture. Unfortunately the soil had been drained of nutrients over the years and, without fertilisers, it was unable to produce the same output as before. Crop yields fell by 60% over the period 1989-1998. Unless it can get access to oil and fertilisers again, the population will decline until it reaches a sustainable level.
This is such as important aspect that I have gone into more detail on the Agriculture page.

Plastics
It is often forgotten by many people that plastic products are based on petroleum. A glance around any room will show how pervasive they are. There are many other oil-based household objects. The following is a list of just some products that may disappear with oil.
Air conditioners, ammonia, anti-histamines, antiseptics, artificial turf, asphalt, aspirin, balloons, bandages, boats, bottles, bras, bubble gum, butane, cameras, candles, car batteries, car bodies, carpet, cassette tapes, caulking, CDs, chewing gum, cold, combs/brushes, computers, contacts, cortisone, crayons, cream, denture adhesives, deodorant, detergents, dice, dishwashing liquid, dresses, dryers, electric blankets, electrician’s tape, fertilisers, fishing lures, fishing rods, floor wax, footballs, glues, glycerin, golf balls, guitar strings, hair, hair colouring, hair curlers, hearing aids, heart valves, heating oil, house paint, ice chests, ink, insect repellent, insulation, jet fuel, life jackets, linoleum, lip balm, lipstick, loudspeakers, medicines, mops, motor oil, motorcycle helmets, movie film, nail polish, oil filters, paddles, paint brushes, paints, parachutes, paraffin, pens, perfumes, petroleum jelly, plastic chairs, plastic cups, plastic forks, plastic wrap, plastics, plywood adhesives, refrigerators, roller-skate wheels, roofing paper, rubber bands, rubber boots, rubber cement, rubbish bags, running shoes, saccharine, seals, shirts (non-cotton), shoe polish, shoes, shower curtains, solvents, solvents, spectacles, stereos, sweaters, table tennis balls, tape recorders, telephones, tennis rackets, thermos, tights, toilet seats, toners, toothpaste, transparencies, transparent tape, TV cabinets, typewriter/computer ribbons, tyres, umbrellas, upholstery, vaporisers, vitamin capsules, volleyballs, water pipes, water skis, wax, wax paper

Too many "fat fucks" in USA to fit in Belgium. Also in 1993 I was deported from Belgium and I'm not sure if I'm allowed back in yet. If I decide to go on a major munching tour for the foreseeable future will I be kept apart from my brethren ? USA is bigger and as that's where most of the heavyweights reside it would save on transport pollution, those planes gotta be worse than cars right? The heavier the cargo, the more fuel it uses.
Have you ever moved house? Did you pick up all your belongings and walk them to your new abode?
Did you walk with your PC and other home comforts from the store or perhaps build it from scratch with spare materials lying around your backyard?
If you've ever had anything delivered by petroleum using vehicle or ever left your home town, caught a bus (greyhound?) or ever been driven to a party/college/sporting event/church/family gathering/etc. by friends (scratch that one) you're a hypocrite.
By the way, FYI I don't drive and for many of the reasons you state, just like I don't smoke, these are personal choices but I don't go ramming them down everyone elses throat. If the person sitting next to me is having a smoke, I'll either sit there and take it (it's a lot cheaper that way) or move my own delicate lungs and throat away from the DANGER area. The same goes for roads, I stay off them and live amongst the oxygen producing trees. "TAXI!"

I tried to find a pic of Bob Geldof to post and claim it was me, lol. I was gonna Photoshop it so he had oriental attributes pasted on as well. But for lack of a suitable current pic -- and I tried to find a pic of Bono as well, but he and I already share enough annoying attributes, lol.
