I'm new so this may have been covered substantially and I haven't seen it yet. Anyone have a theory on the effect Mars will have on the Earth when the 2 planets pass each other?...the closest in some 5000 yrs.. Just curious.

Hello Theo, welcome to the site...
Mars had no substantial effect on the Earth last year on August 26-28 when it did pass closely to us. But we did get a good show and a better close up view of the planet through our world wide telescope system.

Not much happened last year, I think it'd have to come really close to affect us here. Extreme high/low tides would be likely which would bring major flooding

That is cool. You can see Mars and it'll be huge. Thats about it right.
Unless you read stuff by this guy: mariscoming.com.
Then its hell and brimstone. But I think it'll be a beautiful sight!
(mars that is)
