LONDON, England (UPI) -- Windows Vista, the next version of Microsoft software, has been criticized because it takes up too much space and memory for most British computers.
A technology and telecommunications consultant has reviewed the operating system and said only five percent of British households have computers able to handle everything Vista has to offer.

I don't believe only 5% of British computers can operate this new system, that figure should be much higher! Mac OS X forever!

I MEAN... compared 2 normal win op 4 this TOPIC, macs would probably be better. So, yes i do lean on them slightly 4 this. but i ain't exactly a great fan, i must admit.

to tell you the truth, i don't believe that only 5% of britan has computers capable of handling the new software. and even if it is true, not everybody needs it, they could upgrade or buy a new system.

I knew it. Just wait until they found out that with vista, everything else doesn't work anymore.
Ever tried to play an old DOS game in XP.

Get DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) .
And on the new Windowns OS, I'd say it doesn't matter much anyway because until it is running stable and secure the computers will have caught up with the system requirements.

yeah~hell on earth. 98 was good 4 dos related applications, but xp creates too much of a 'shell' around the inital OP.

Win98 was a piece of junk. It was probably the most unstable aside from Win95. If any tiny thing went wrong with the OS you'd have to completey reinstall. 95/98 were completely unrepairable operating systems.

This is just a big push to get people to buy new equipment and accelerate the rate of obsolenity (if that is even a word) of last year's high end equipment. The old addage "if it aint broke..." applies here. If you get results from your machine and it runs the apps you need to use, then don't upgrade. If you like to play the latest and greatest games - sucks to be you - pay up.
The problem all started with the Mac. Microsoft saw how user friendly the windows operating system of the Mac was and realized that if they didn't copy it fast, they would lose their shirts. So they started releasing the crap we have been stuck with for the past 10 years. Who could afford a Mac after all. We could just run the MS crap on our cheap PCs.
I'm done ranting. And I didn't even talk about viruses.

Linux is the most stable, but there's no developers for it. 98% of commercial software will not work on a Linux system.

Actually, I have just read that it says 'only five percent of British households have computers able to handle everything Vista has to offer'. So they will still bre able to run it, but not to it's full capabilities.

Does it randomly fail or bsod just like the real thing?

in some situations the games can perform better than they would with windows dragging the system down in the background. I didnt notice any random failure or bsod. If anything a few of the newest games may not be fully compatible yet. :)
whoops, its called Cedega, check it out here:

Back in the days when I really was an expert on computers - sadly no longer I didn't keep it up - I was programming Acorn based machines using 6502 (<2MHz processors), writing either in BBC Basic or 6502 assembler. The BBC computer had 32Kb of Ram; however it was still very possible to run an effective word processor / spreadsheet within these constraints, and simple 2D games, and text adventure games (will there ever be a resurgence of those?)
These days though, as memory has become more and more abundant, code seems to be much more bloated, and to acheive the same effect as small amounts of memory used to acheive seems to take up a lot more memory. I think that there must be a great deal of inefficiencies somewhere going on, and bloated code can lead to bugs and problems. These days, very simple program modules can be at least 150Kbs in length, whereas in 1988, the entire BBC Basic interpreter Rom was written with just 16Kb of space.

I personally think that Windows ME was by far the worst one ever made by microsoft. Personally I like XP, I have never actually had any problems with it so far....*knocks on wood*

XP just runs fine.

I know, but I fear these programs have to be invented all over again.

I use Windows 98 because my computer is utter trash. I can't even DREAM of using Vista. No that I would like to, though. Who the f#k needs 3D desktop and most of the useless crap?
By the way, Cedega isn't open source, despite being for Linux.

U ask me, 98 rules supreme! So long as u have a good computer, its the ultimate os for those who want to hack and change their system, especialy when it comes to dos- based apps. U can hardly do fuck with xp.
Minuet os is open-source and is 1.20 meg big! It aint actually that shit, but there is one thing about it- u cant change the desktop wallpaper! It runs of the floopy, and so long as u have a formatted hd with 1 meg of mem and 500k of cache, it should be clean water runnin for u!
