I have been searching the web for information regarding the origin and use of a certain symbol I stumbled across several years ago, but after weeks of trying I have found nothing.
The symbol seems to represent the globe of the Earth with two wings above it and what looks like wavy lines or water beneath it. I think it may have some connection with a religious or knightly order, but I cannot say this for certain.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me in this matter.

Good Question... and welcome to the board!!!
I would also like to find out more about symbology.
Maybe I have just finally been caught by the Di Vinci Code bug. LOL!

Under which context is it used? Can you describe it in better detail?

Well, I've never seen a symbol like you described Aureole, but this site (http://www.symbols.com/) might be a good place to start.

Hello Marajadex, liberdave and Sammy56; and thankyou for your response.
I can't really add to the description I gave other than to say that the disc is definitely representative of the Earth, i.e., it's not merely a plain circle. The wavy lines directly beneath it are supposed to signify water, and the wings above it are avian wings (not batlike, etc.).
As for the context, I think it was used by a Christian Order. I came across it about four or five years ago, and my memory of the exact context has faded somewhat.
I wish I could give more information.

Were the wings attached to the globe? or were they just hanging?
I would try either posting this question here (http://www.occultforums.com/index.php) or searching here (http://altreligion.about.com/library/graphics/bl_imageindex.htm) (although this site would take some digging).

The wings were suspended above, and not attached. I think ...

Hello Aureole and welcome,
The symbol seems to represent the globe of the Earth with two wings above it and what looks like wavy lines or water beneath it. I think it may have some connection with a religious or knightly order, but I cannot say this for certain.
The three symbols you have mentioned here are :
Wings = Air
Body = Earth
Waves = Water
These are three of the four elements that nature is composed of, the fourth being fire.
The specific representation that you are speaking of relates to creation itself and could be found in just about any of the old religions, with a diverse number of presentations of understanding.
These symbols are used extensively in heraldry and so what you may have seen could have been one families coat of arms. The colour of the body or roundle also has many different meanings.
