Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert on Sundays night ordered the Israeli military to prepare for a large-scale operation against the Gaza Strip, following the abduction of a soldier earlier in the day and the deaths of two others in a Palestinian militant attack.
But he told the army to hold off at least until the soldier was safely returned.
The attack on an army position on the border between Israel and Gaza was the first fatal one of its kind since Israel withdrew from the area almost a year ago. It also claimed the lives of at least two of the attackers.
After an emergency cabinet session, Mr Olmert warned the Palestinians that none of the people involved was “immune”. He had earlier put the blame squarely on the Hamas-led Palestinian government and on Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority.
