Bloody Mary - I could be wrong on some details of the myth, but from what I remember, Bloody Mary was supposed to appear if you took a mirror, covered it with sea water, and repeated her name over and over. Of course, she's supposed to be a psychotic spirit and a killer of children, so I'm not sure who'd be crazy enough to try it. Either it's a waste of time, or a good way to call up trouble you probably can't handle.

When I was younger, you were supposed to go into a dark room with a candle and say her name into a mirror until she appeared. No seawater involved in any of the versions I heard. I do remember having to include some other object, but I can't remember what it was. Oh, and it would only work on Halloween for some reason.

I never tried it.

Here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060711/ap_on_re_as/india_train_explosion) is some more information about the variants to the myth.

Mary Tudor (Mary I) earned the epithet of Bloody Mary because she slaughtered hundreds of Protestants during her reign. The most common ritual in summoning her is to shut yourself in a dark bathroom with a mirror, spin around, and call out her name 3 times. Once you stop spinning you're supposed to be able to see a phantasmal reflection of her in the mirror. This is utter nonsense. Due to lack of light and dizziness, your eyes play tricks on you and you THINK you see a figure in the mirror. It's nothing more than a children's game.

Yeah, I remember trying all that stuff as a kid, to no avail. =D

Yes I agree. I think there is an instinctive fear of the dark for all to some degree or other, and to actually do the above would cause the mind to spin at the very least slightly (due to the balance fluids in the ear), coupled with the dark and the fear of the paranormal being real, combine all three and it ends up being very likely that the brain would hallucinate such a figure. Don't do it!!

Funny you talk about the dark being a fear to some degree or another in everyone, I strongly dissagree, there have been 90% of the time, I make my way through my house in the complete darkness to do normal things like get a beer, I think its fun, kind of gives me the experience of being blind....I would rather be deaf than blind to say the least :nudge:

I stand corrected. It's good to know not everyone is afraid of the dark. I am, and at least some are.

Its funny to hear the diffrent ways to summon her, when i was in elementary school we were told to turn out the lights, flush the toilet three times while saying her name, then look for her image in the mirror.i tried it and by the last flush i was so hyped up i ran out of the bathroom terrified,LMAO!Could never bring myself to look at the mirror on the way out.

Heard too many stories like that when I was a kid. Has led me to avoid mirrors in the dark. To this day I won't have a mirror on the wall in my bedroom. There was also supposed to be a game where if you stare directly into a mirror in the dark you can see into another dimension. Supposedly a dimension of the dead.

I must have been a very impressionable youth...
That or had a really bad experience that my brain has blocked out...
In either case I really hate mirrors in the dark.

I hate mirrors in the dark as well. Actually, my bedroom doesn't have any mirrors at all.

Demonskates, I've never heard a version that involves flushing the toilet before. Kind of funny, actually.

Christ! mirrors! They scare the peppers outta me in the dark! Ive never slept in room with mirrors apart from when i stay with my nana, i have to sleep i my grandad's room. (He died on 31/12/99-spooky, huh?) anyway, I sware there i see things in them! A full moon makes the fluid and blood in the body go up too, as with wves though, makes u unable to sleep when full oon out, so it could just have been that!

i don't agree with any of you.......yet i don't agree with those who think its real.....i just dont mess with shit like that and i don't want to say because you don't know if its true if you don't try.........remember those morons at your school that fuck with you by making you go into the bathroom all by yourself in the dark and whatnot?lol those dudes and dudetts deserve to have their manhood chopped off and for the women...have their titties cut off cause its unhuman to do something like that....people go ahead and try it.....you'lll just have to see for yourself, thats the only way to find out.......

Now that I'm slightly to old to believe in things like calling up a vengeful spirit in a bathroom, I really wouldn't be that afraid to try it. It's a childrens game used to try and scare people. I'm sure there are some kids out there who have actually done it and nothing happened.

It isn't inhuman for one kid to try and scare another. It's not nice, but it's a form of playing. No one has died from trying to summon Bloody Mary.

Sammy and Skynet... I lived for a short time with my Mom in a condo she had bought. (condo was a piece of crap! Thank God it is gone!) ALL of the closets were covered with mirrors. The closet in my room had 3 big sliding doors. She would not let me take the doors off. Would not let me cover the mirrors with low-tack contact paper so I finally had to hang a King size sheet over 2 of the doors and keep the third slid back behind the other 2. Mom did not like the Sheet hanging on the wall either. Kept telling me it was all in my head and to get over it, it was an unreasonable fear. It finally came down to... if the sheet goes so do I. Since she did not want to sleep in the condo alone and wanted me to be there at nights she conceded to leaving the sheet up.

Marajadex,if you hate mirrors youd have hated this! One night me and a bunch of buddies were watching a friends appartment, being good hippies we decided to drop som L.S.D.(SILLY TEENS!)So i administer doses to everyone and we are having fun, things get wierd around the edges you know, lol then i hear CRASH! from the other room, one of my buddies had knocked over a huge six foot antique mirror.so now we are stareing at thousands of shards of mirror, with thousands of tiny reflections of us looking at the shards,we did that for like a few hours i think, after,we are trying to pick this up,without getting cut,all messed up,and all im thinking is ten years bad luck for us all.and our reflections were just off because we are on acid,it was freaky for sure.things were moving in the shards that werent our reflection.we all were very unsettled by it. :

as i said, it is three huge mirrors on a sliding wardrobe door that scares me. It's slightly tinted yellow, which just adds to it.

The spare bedroom at my grandmother's house has a closet like that. Always freaked me out. I don't think I ever slept peacefully there.

Your quoting me and I haven't posted in this thread before. Getting back to the point this is what I find so interesting in human nature I have a mirror in my bedroom and it doesn't effect me at all.

And apologies to Skynet as well.

XSam I haven't quoted what you put, but I think you should know that the types of things you suggest doing to people in retaliation for childish pranks is not normal. Unless you want to have a 'bash' at being a horror movie writer, they're TOO unpleasant. Try and think more calm, serene pleasant thoughts. I'm sure it will improve your inner wellbeing too. I'm really not into horror, you might be more popular if you are able to adjust your mindset somewhat.
