I wish to discuss commercial slaughterhouses, abbatoirs and the like. I have just seen footage of cows being killed for their meat from an undercover film by Peta. May I ask for comments and opinions on this topic, and then add my own as I complete formulating my own thoughts? I have not posted a link but if you search for 'Abbatoir footage' a great deal of links appear. At the minute I remain a meat-eater, but this is very much subject to possible change, and further research will probably uncover that something is in fact not right here.

Well,ive talked to a guy about it.He worked at one.Its pretty horrible shit.
They load the cattle on trucks.Before the cattle even reach the compound they freak out.They can smell the death there.Then they are forced off the truck.Which involves alot of smashing the cattles faces with hammers and such,just to get them of the truck.They know whats waiting for them there.Its by no means humane.Then when they are inside,their head is either smashed with a sledge hammer,or some places have this gun,which is air powered,they put it against the cattles head,and when the guys pulls the trigger,the air forces a piston forward with a spike on it,and it drives into the cattles head killing it.Some places slit their throats to kill them,and then hang em from a hook,letting the blood drain as it hangs.
From their its slice and dice city.Id never want to see it,i mean ive seen film,but it grosses me out.I still eat meat.If they kill it,ill grill it.why let it go to waste.
I do however wish they were less brutal to them.I saw footage of a guy who cut off a horn on one of the bulls with bolt cutters just for the fuck of it.Blood spurting all over the place.You could see the bull was in agony.Some people are cruel.
They are so desensitized to the gore,they seem to forget they are living creatures.Once an animal becomes a food source.People dont look at them as living creature with feelings anymore.Especially at slaughter houses.It becomes nothing but a job.Torturing animals is sick.Even though they are going to kill the animal anyway,dosent mean it should be tortured.

dude this is gonna sond tottally crazy but in grade 2 GRADE 2!! my summer camp took me on a trip to a slaughter houe HHAHA!! i got fre kolbosa lol ea.. they showd us a MASSIVE blender and how to turn a pi carcus into paste in it ... quite the experiance ... and smelly one.

Thank you for your insights, particularly Demonskates. I admit I am still researching this, and finding out more so I will post again soon. I did eat some Quorn (Myco-protein based) vegetarian sausages the other day - they tasted great, to be absolutely honest I think meat sausages taste better, but only just - and if the skin of the Quorn sausages was slightly thicker that would improve them. But yes, something's wrong here, but whether there are any abbatoirs that DO have high humane standards, remains for me (and perhaps others) to research.

I would like to own a group of Abbatoirs when I am older. Simply so I can treat the animals better. I plan to call the business Consolidated Vision Abbatoirs Ltd. (this may be over 10 years away).

As long as the gore dosent bother you.People that work in those places are,well a bit off from what ive seen.The work staff would need to be monitored.If you intend to give the cattle a humane send off any way.Honestly,the main reason the cattle are abused,is trying to get them off the truck,My freind,B.G. or goat for short said he had to stand on the cattles back,and hit the cattle in the face as hard as he could with a sledge,swinging it between his legs while standing over them.after a few times they do finally start to back out of the truck,but it takes extreme measures to get them to walk to their own death.These animals are not stupid.They know,they can smell it in the air.If that is your plan though,i would feel better about eating meat,knowing that it was as humane for them as possible.
If people had to kill their own meat,gut it,and skin it,its doubtful their would be so many meat eaters out there.I know i dont have the stomach for it.Fortuantely there are those whom it dosent bother.If you came up with a system,where the cattle are killed ON the truck,then removed when they are dispatched,it would solve all the violent abuses concerning getting them to walk of their own free will to their death.Then i could see it being pretty humane.the trucks could be sprayed with a power hose after the cattle are removed,and the truck can go for another load.

I soppose you are right.the truck itself would then smell like death.Hadnt thought of that.Im not sure exhaust would be good,im not sure if that would leave bad things in their blood.Perhaps raising them at the slaughter house,so transporting them isnt an issue.

Probably not, most of the poison would remain in the blood. Whether or not the food is contaminated depends on the poison. Carbon monoxide for example, only remains in the blood and lungs, and is only dangerous if people inhale it. Since we don't inhale our food and trow those organs away anyway, it's safe. The only reason it isn't used is unfortunately those nasty little papers with the founding fathers on them.

I worked in a slaughter house for a short time about 20 years ago. I was nothing like what has been described. We knocked out the cattle with a .22 to the head so that we could hang them up and bleed them. We used an electric jolt for pigs. The key to killing for food is to do it quickly and as painless as possible. In order for an animal to be used for food, it must be drained of its blood immediately. Most animals are killed by loss of blood rather than a knock on the head - that is just to knock them out.

You may be familiar with the term - dead meat. Dead meat includes road kill and other dead animals that are eaten. Dead meat is not considered a food source, even though some people eat it. It is illegal to slaughter a dead animal for meat; therefore, it must be killed (and drained of blood) in the slaughter house.

Anyone who has hunted for food understands that an animal that is killed quickly and drained of its blood immediately tastes better on the plate than an animal that has been chased, shot at, gut shot, butt shot, etc.

This is excellent news to me.

Are you telling me that a humane way of killing does exist - if a little more expensive due to logistical requirements - in other words, given a little extra money, we can kill animals for food in a totally humane way? Is this the case?

By the way, in my abbatoir vision cows etc. are transported away on a conveyor belt to be killed in a separate room, so that it doesn't seem like a queue for death.

Are we on to something here? I post in hope.
