A new Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon from South Korea, has been chosen in the United Nations.
Do you think that this will do anything to make the UN more effective, or is it just talk?

Electing a South Korean to the leadership of the UN at this point in time seems like a provocation to North Korea. I don't doubt that dealing with the now nuclear armed North Koreans is tops on this guy's agenda. But as for the rest of the security council, I'm not sure if they're willing to go beyond the symbolic gesture of this election. More often than not, it seems like they can agree on what's bad - just not what to do about it.

Yeah, when I showed a friend this article, he pretty much said that electing a South Korean was pretty much the worst move they could've made. I'm not sure exactly how the UN election process works, or who else was a candidate, so I don't
know if it was the right choice or not, but I doubt it'll do anything for the North Korea situation aside from alienate them further form the rest of the world.
