  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: The Math Thread - Request help with all forms of mathematics

Ok, this thread is meant to be a place where those of us who take math classes can help each other out on difficult problems, concepts, etc. I'm making this because Calculus can be quite difficult, and I could use some help every once and a while...AND because I will be taking a math tutoring class next semester (need to practice... hehe...). I'm sure there are many people here who are taking a math course. In this thread, we can all help each other, or even discuss crazy math concepts like Gödel's theorem, indeterminates or things like that. If ever you have a question, post it here, and hopefully someone will be able to help you. Feel free to ask anything. "The only stupid question is the one not asked," as the saying goes... if no one here can help you, we can dig up some math tutoring links...here's a few... Calculus help .com

  2. Arrow Sticky Thread Sticky: Einstein's Relativity

Many people think the concept of Einstein's relativity theory is incomprehensible to the layman. This is far from the truth. Naturally, certain aspects of General Relativity are much more difficult to grasp, but the overall concept is not beyond layman understanding. I am attempting to explain the overall concept of relativity so that anyone can grasp it. I'll start with a few questions about the subject. Relativity theory was first proposed by Galileo. The theory is that the laws of physics apply to all equally, there are no special circumstances. This was significant for the Renaissance period because of what disciplines of physics were known. Einstein adopted Galilean relativity and simply applied it to contemporary technology and knowledge by creating Special Relativity. Don't be fooled by the term "special" because it wasn't that the theory was actually different or even special. What Einstein did was associate Galilean relativity with known physics of the time. The major difference was that Einstein...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: How to post in this forum

It's quite simple. Make a title a simplified form of your question or even a phrase. Example: How does a star work? Example2: Particle Collisions and Energy. Basically, from there you pose your question in a bit more detail and wait for the answers to flow in. There are only three things to consider while using this forum and her threads: Feel free to ask as many questions inside the thread related to the initial question until it is answered. Anyone may answer if they know the answer. If you don't really know the answer, it's best not to express personal theories. Save that for a thread in the parent forum. If you have a question related to the topic, but not about the original question, please start a new thread.

  2. I just FAILED! Series series series = death. Now HELP!

Engineer people (this means you, Fire Ant) get in here! I know you know Series! There hasn't been a single (successful) engineer in the history of modern engineering that doesn't know series well! So, here goes... I am certain I utterly failed an exam over differential equations. I got screwed on the series solution part. Now, I can do easy ones, like the one I will show in a second, but the hard ones, with unknown functions of variable coefficients? LOST. Okay, here is what I CAN do.

  4. change column format to regular paragraph

Honest to freakin god I'm about to go nuts here. Its the simple things that make us crazy, I really think so. Ok, issue. I am trying to copy a news article that is a pdf file. I can copy and paste with no problem, but I have not been able to quickly convert the column format to paragraph style. Once, somehow, I did it- it seems I "selected all" text and then chose "clear format" and that did the trick. However today all it clears is the font formatting. The only way I can clear the column formatting is to open it up to see the source or whatever and then individually, for each and every line, remove the code. Isn't there an easier way? I'm sitting here with notepad, wordpad, and Word open. The article is from a pdf. <pulls hair out>

  5. Concerning a web page

I am the newest of the new web page builders, so new I still use Trellian and although there is an option to code it manually, I have very little idea how to do that, but that isn't even my problem. Currently I have just a page of various news links and links to other sorts of things, such as this forum, my forum, good astrological resources, ancient Sumerian and other writings, ect... so I plan to add other sections. What I want to do is also make a page that has an almost daily news roundup, kind of like a blog. Quite basically all the stories I post on my board each day (or almost each day) I'll make into one post with summaries of each story and links to source or whatever. So this page, if I can get it right, will become the index page, my links page will become another page that links off from it. I know how to build a page with links to other pages, but what I want to know is, when I go in and update each time, what do I do with the page from the previous day? I want to keep them around for...

  6. for Fireant, etc (math people): Need help with a PDE

I need to change the two dimensional time-independent Schrödinger Equation from Cartesian coordinates to Polar Coordinates. Then, if any of you know how to do it, I need help solving it using the separation of variables technique (the Partial Differential Equation seperatio of variables technique, not the Ordinary Differential Equation seperation of variables technique). Here is the equation: (∂^2Ψ(x,y)/∂x^2) + (∂^2Ψ(x,y)/∂y^2) = -k^2 Ψ(x,y) where k^2 is a constant, dependent upon energy and mass, and Ψ(x,y) is a function of x and y. Now, here is what I tried to do. If you know how, tell me if and where I made mistakes.

  7. Iraq War and the value of the USD

If anyone is good at ecnomics (I wish Perfectionist was still here), I have a question. In what ways has the Iraq war contributed to the devaluing of the USD? There is obviously a corelation, so what's the connection? I am looking for a slightly technical response if possible (i.e., not just political ranting against Bush. This is an acedemic interest on my part).

  9. U.S.S.R., Canada and American-Indian questions questions...

While I love history I never really studied much about the USSR or Canada . So I had some questions: USSR: 1. Does anyone have a map of before it was the USSR? During and after it stopped being the USSR (today)? 2. I am curious mostly to what it was before it became the USSR. Who owned what places (what countries existed)? 3. During the time when it was the USSR what countries existed at that point in europe? 4. What led to the USSR? What made it stop?

  11. Looking for some practical information

Ok I’m looking for some practical information here. What I want to do is produce enough electrical power to trickle charge a normal lead acid battery, (car battery) directly from a normal camp fire. On a very low budget! In order to achieve this I am looking at connecting a whole lot of thermocouples together into a thermopile. Use the camp fire to heat the one end and some water that is handy to cool the other. I was thinking along the lines of ceramics in a metal. casing to insulate the hot end. But the problem is finding a cheep source for the materials. I have found that normal welding wire as in arc welders is a good substitute for the nickel wire. But I need to find a good substitute for the Selenium or Tellurium wire. After all the last thing I want is to set up a pile of over 2000 wires.

  12. Exclamation The Big Bang

I've been thinking about something for a while now and I thought that the science buffs here may be able to shed a little light on the matter, The current theroy is that the universe started off with the big bang. That means that all the matter that makes up this universe was all at some point in time concentrated in a single location. What would have been the strength of the gravitational pull of all that matter in a single consitrated location. By my logic there should have been enough gravatational force present to constitute a black hole. The universe should have consumed itself then and there, it should not have been able to expand outward no mater how big the bang was. What do you figure?

I have always wanted to see the future and i was wondering, Could i be Cryo-frozen and one day be awaken. Now I know i dont have the resources but I think we all have thought about this once or twice. To my knowledge the act of being flash frozen would make the water in your cell rupture and kill you but is there any other theories out there?

  19. Taking a Nuclear Power Plant Offline

I want to know the steps to taking a nuclear power plant offline. He saw it, he responded to it without answering the question. So I rephrased the question with more detail and now it's just gone. You can see by the date stamp that I asked what happened to my question yesterday and was ignored. The other posts in the forum are dated after mine. So, by reasonable deduction I have determined that my question was perhaps not in his area of expertise. (I don't know what his area of expertise is, it might be helpful to know.) So good luck with your forum, I hope other questions dont warrant more than a breezy answer.
