Thanks for the info hoodlum but do you have any further info or sources to back this up? I mean, I thought the sun was pretty hot in any case.

Noob.
The sun still has Billions and Billions and billions of years before it starts burning carbon. Research abit before you post, noob.

Dec 2nd, 2003 11:35 AM #6Actually, the sun has roughly 6 billion years left before it begins burning helium, not carbon. Currently, the sun consumes hydrogen, converting it to helium. Helium burns at a higher temperature and also takes up more space. In the next 6 billion years, the sun will burn away its hydrogen and expand into a red giant -- every planet within the inner solar system destined to be consumed.Originally posted by Krazy

Dec 10th, 2003 1:35 AM #8JacGuestummm.... helium doesn't "burn hotter" then hydrogen... the amount of energy released from fusion is entirely reliant in the jump of potential atomic energy... the fusion from hydrogen to helium releases roughly 3 times the amount of energy then helium to the next element down... learned that in physics 12...Originally posted by lazserus

also that is the reason why the sun will shrink before it becomes a red giant... the suns power output will not be enough to support it's size, so it will start to collapse... then it becomes unstable, grows to the point that it will swallow mercury, possibly venus.... then finally die... but as a red giant, it will still be much cooler then it is now...

It's conjectured to expand to just inside the inner asteroid belt, consuming Earth and Mars as well.

Our sun is composed of about 75% helium and 25% hydrogen, which puts it at half of its life cycle. After the hydrogen burning stage, this is what happens.

Umm.... Yeah it is. and within 2000 more yers earth will be a barren wasteland with terrain somewhat similar to arizona and on cool days low temps of 120 degrees farenheit.

The sun isnt get any hotter in fact it's getting colder, and please if anyone starts talking about the sun exploding anytime soon its not. Besides by the time it does explode it will have engulfed the terrestrial planets and possibly Jupiter. Thats about 5 billion years from now by the way.

Hey I might be optimistic guys but I figure if the human race is around in 6 billion yrs it will have the technology to refuel stars. Laz I know that this is incomprehensible but it is not impossible.

Mar 10th, 2004 8:10 PM #15You have it backwards. The sun's getting hotter. It's thought it increase by 0.72 degrees over the century. And it won't get large enough to engulf Jupiter. The largest it could get would just eat Mars, but not any larger than that. The sun isnt get any hotter in fact it's getting colder
