He was great, and all due respects, but evolutionary theory today is far removed from his version. Sure, basic principle applies, but it's so much more.
One thing he deserves credit for: Not making flawed assumptions about metaphysical things like God, souls, etc because of his theory. He remained open minded about these things, refusing to make a judgment based upon insufficient information. If only more people would take heed to his wisdom! Both religious and non-religious alike!"I was put on trial twice near Y2K for acting like Jesus and claiming to be the Messiah. Its not everyday that a man parks a Chariot of Fire in front of a tomb and stands against the US government with a bow and razor tipped arrows over his shoulder. I wore a suit of armor and was protected by an invisible bubble and my sharp tongue was more than the judicial system could handle."Jake

CT-Agreed that evo theory today is different than the original theory espoused by Darwin (most notably because he knew nothing about genes and DNA--that wasn't known until 1952) but I think it is still safe to say that Darwin's ideas of sexual and natural selection are among the most revolutionary of all time. There has never been a more complete rout of popular opinion by clever reasoning then Darwin's triumph over Paley's "intelligent designer" theory. And Darwin didn't just stumble across a good idea--he spent over 20 years perfecting it, studying and finding evidence, doing experiments and research to support it before he published his first book. That kind of dedication and ability alone is to be commended.
Next week is Darwin week at my university and I am going to a couple lectures about the evo theory and the intersection between science and religion...ought to be really interesting!"We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men — not from men who feared to write, to associate, to speak and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular."
