Intelligence
I have become convinced that no one can accurately judge the intelligence of another. I was again reminded of this today. I struck up a conversation with a woman in a client's office while I was waiting to see my contact. I was left with the impression that this woman was a dumb as dirt bimbo airhead. I later found out that she had a PhD in applied mathematics. She came across like she barely made it out of grade school.
Japanese tend to come across as retards also. I have met a few Japanese engineers that were obviously brilliant as I've seen some of their work but you certainly couldn't tell from casual conversation.
Bottom line is, there really is no outward indication of true intelligence.

Actually I've found a correlation between a person's intelligence and their inept social skills. I guess using my own theory, I must be a dimwit. Oh yeah, I think your japanese remark is border line racist but I know what you're trying to say. Still racist though.

A man on an airplane sitting next to this hot blonde looks over and says
"Ive heard that flights go faster if you strike up a conversation"
She closes her book and looks at him a bit impatiently
"What would you like to talk about?" she asks
"I dont know, Physics?"
So she says " Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure"
"If deer eat grass, and cows eat grass and horses eat grass and grass is all the same, why do deer leave little pebbles, cows leave a patty, what do horses leave"
"I dont know" says the guy.
Blonde "Then how do you feel qualified enough to talk about Physics when you dont know sh**"
Appearances arent everything, people think im a complete idiot sometimes, until they want research work done.

Actually, I have a tremendous respect for the Japanese. I drive a Toyota and my house is full of Japanese electronics. I can't imagine life without them. I may in fact be racist but not against the Japanese. I save my racism for the religious zealots. :)

It is funny that you say that there is a reversed correlation between intelligence and social skills. Of course there are brilliant nerds, not capable of uttering more than three words in a row, but most intelligent people I know really sparkle in their conversation. It is true that one should not judge a person's personality by his or her intelligence, but it is certainly not true that all intelligent people have poor social skills. BTW, why are you pulling yourself to a lower level of intelligence in that post, VR? Humility is not always a good social skill, but I'll grant you that boasting is terrible.

Ones intelligence depends upon how attached the soul is to the flesh. The gap between the mind and the brain can be of great size or small, which is the difference of whether you reside in the clouds or here on earth. Therefor, as for my taste, you are 100% right. Intelligence is not there for us to see, but to be experienced.

Kind of unrelated, but I think "Street smarts" is total bullshit. You may know how to interact with others, but that is having good social skills, not being "street smart".

I do not think intelligence and common sense go hand in hand. I have known several people who are very intelligent but couldn't find their way out of a paper bag with a map. On the other hand I have known people with incredible street smarts and very little formal education. I wouldn't call any of them un-intelligent.

You obviously do not see the difference between intelligence and skills. Having perfected a skill does not mean you posess any intelligence. There are even complete idiots that do calculations into the billions by heart. Does that mean they're intelligent?

being the most intelligent person on the internet, I can easily be the judge of who is and is not smart..... Just PM me if you want to know about a specific person.
I aggressively attack stupidity... If you feel I am being aggressive, well....

Well, if you know how to "survive on the streets", then you must be at least somewhat intelligent.

Again: SKILL and INTELLIGENCE are two completely different things. The one does not need the other to exist.

Very true. Would "street smarts" be skill or intelligence? I say both.

No. I would say "experience" leading up to a skill.
