Surviving the End Times for £32,000

How to survive the End Times for a mere £32,000

The 'apocalypse industry' is growing again, with one US firm about to open Europe's first nuclear-bomb-and-asteroid-proof bunker

Are you terrified of earthquakes, floods or tsunamis? Does the prospect of terrorist attack or nuclear holocaust fill you with dread? Or does it take that ancient Mayan stuff about 2012 to get your juices flowing? Whatever your paranoia, fear not: if the End Times really are coming, then a small financial investment is all it will take for you to survive it.

That, at least, is what they're telling customers of the apocalypse industry, a small section of the American economy which, after years in abeyance following the end of the Cold War, has once more started growing again.

Robert Vicino, the founder of Vivos, a Californian company building a "survival network" of upscale underground bunkers across the United States, will travel to London this week to announce the opening of his firm's first nuclear-bomb-and-asteroid-proof property in Europe.

It is understood to be a former military facility, though its exact location, like all Vivos bunkers, is secret, since they don't want non-residents over-running the place when the Big One does strike. It will be stocked with all the food, water, fuel and clothing that its residents need to survive for a year.

"London is of course on the radar of terrorism, and nuclear attacks," Mr Vicino said. "You're closer to the Middle East than we are here in California. And where the divine decides to drop the next asteroid is anyone's guess. Now is the time to prepare if you value your life." You'll have to have a few spare pennies, though. Investors seeking to buy part ownership of one of the Vivos bunkers must stump up $50,000 (£32,000) per adult, and $25,000 for each child. Nonetheless, Vicino claims already to have 5,000 Americans on his books.

He says he's so far built 300,000sq ft of bunker space in the US. Though Europeans have traditionally been more reluctant to buy into the impending apocalypse, he believes the explosion in London's population of high-net-worth individuals has left the British market ripe for exploitation.

50K for a room in a bunker with only 1 year worth of food sounds a little steep. 150k for a
family of four. I know there are companies that will build or install prefabbed bunkers for
around that price, and you can stock it yourself with enough supplies to last a lot longer
    than a year.

Does anyone else think this company's idea sound eerily similar to the vaults in Fallout 3?

Plus on a more serious note now, the article doesn't really go into much much about what happens after the year is up-would there be in-depth survivalist facilities to learn how to live off the land after the year is up? Or will they just go all crazy cannibal and start eating each other?

Also not to mention the fact that the location of the bunker *would* get leaked out at any rate more then likely, due to Daddy telling little Timmy about a safe place to hide out in one night in a bed time story, then little Timmy tells his friends about it. Or someone at the company would accidently leak it out (what if a employee gets fired between now and armageddon and decides to blow the whistle on it?)

The only way this location would be secure, safe place to be would be if the owners were tipped off beforehand of a confirmed apocalyptic event on the down low, keeping the rest of the world in ignorant bliss of the impending doom until the 11th hour.

The last thing I would want to do is be cooped up for any length o time in a disaster situation with a bunch of dipshits who had money to burn but no skills with regards to survival. I think the idea is sound, but you need to be sure you are not hiding out the nasty stuff taking place on the outside with a bunch of Jeffery Dahmers on the inside.

There is a company out of Utah that makes fallout shelters made from 8'-12' diameter steel pipes that have blast doors, a storage facility under the floor, as well as ventilation systems and such. You can buy one fully furnished that is 50' long and will be buried way deep underground (10 or more feet down) and the price is less than $55k. It might cost a bit more to install in some locations, but the idea is that you can hold a fairly large number of folks down there. 2 or more can be connected as well, making for multiple rooms. I actually thought about something like this when thinking about building a cabin in the deep woods, as being underground gives a large degree of fire protection. Anyway, I would much rather spend $75k on a shelter that is my own and quick to get into. Another $75k in storage food would likely buy 5 or more years of freeze dried meals for a large family, as well as firearms and other necessities that would be apparently needed if you had to stay in the shelter for any length of time.
