There's no place like home.. execpt maybe that place 20 light years from Earth
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...ocId=D9IHR0P00
So we found a place that is habitable...
Now how long until the war takes place over land there? How long before countries aim for the new planet as a base?
Is this the beginning of Stars Wars?

That is pretty damn big news!

No it is not ! Ok maybe a little.
The planet circles a star called Gliese 581. It's about 120 trillion miles away, so it would take several generations for a spaceship to get there. It may seem like a long distance, but in the scheme of the vast universe, this planet is "like right in our face, right next door to us," Vogt said in an interview.
I think we have a better chance of war talking place on mars but even that is beyond are life time.________________

True, but the fact that a planet that could be like Earth being that close makes the likelihood of Earth being all that special a bit presumptuous. Imagine what is probably within 100 light years of us.

This is great news. It also makes me just about certain that life is common theme in throughout the universe being that it was found at all. Unfortunately it is so far away that we will never fully know what the planet is like.

Considering the amount of armed conflicts we have had even this last 100 years, not to mention the past 1000....I seriously doubt we will ever see anything beyond the lunar surface.
We tend to forget that this same mentality the started all those conflicts is still with us.....the stone axe preceded the wheel, just like the bomb preceded going to the moon. Sorry, but we're still the same animal and now hold the technology of extinction.

shortround is right. Dreaming big is wonderful and all but we have barely survived ourselves here. We have to get down to Earth before we go for the stars.

As I have repeatedly stated, there are more than 10,000 G-Class stars within 50 Light Years of Earth. Can G-Class stars support life? Our Sun is a G-Class star and it does. If you want to include K-Class Stars the number quadruples.
It's appalling that your tax-dollars have been totally wasted searching for planets orbiting Quasars, Neutron Stars and Blue Giants in distant galaxies when you have that many stars nearby.
That's akin to looking for tomato plants in Antarctica.
I can't believe I'm the only one on Earth who thinks it's totally illogical to waste money like that. This White House photograph is made available for publication by news organizations or personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. Or from a different perspective...
We need to settle there as soon as possible, so we don't "carry all our eggs in one basket" so to speak. That way, if we become extinct on Earth (by climate change, asteroids, war, disease, etc.), humanity will still exist--hopefully for a second chance.
They at least need to dispatch a robot immediately.
But this is somewhat old news. This was mentioned in an issue of Scientific American over a year ago, but in a vaguer sense. They mentioned that they were looking into a nearby planet that appeared as if it could house life. They mentioned it was nearly identical to Earth in many characteristics.Poetry is superior to history -Aristotle

We should first fix up things on earth before moving to another living planet.
For humanity today. The frozen hell of Pluto without no hope of ever seeing the sun is enough.

The human race will become extinct within two centuries unless it colonises space, Stephen Hawking has warned.

Colonizing space does not necessary mean colonizing planets with life already on it.

A great point Lyx. If the current planet will only keep microbes alive in a atmosphere with less oxygen than we need no reasons to go there.
What we need is a planet that we can survive on. And if there is already life as we know it we can do a few things.
Make friends and integrate.
Shoot them and just take over the planet.
HOPE LIKE HELL they don't do what I just posted to us.
OK the make friends and integrate thing might work.
I take it you are not worried about survival Lyx.________________

Actually that there are microbes are already a good reason to stay away.
Unless you want to end like the Martians in War of the Worlds.
As for make friends. How well have we made friends with the rest of the living beings on this planet?
Nor is survival an issue here. If our species is advanced enough to reach such planets. It has shown it can survive for a long period in outer space. Colonizing dead planets like the moon is easy compared with living in outer space. (And also a lot safer than colonizing living planets.)

I think you need to go back and examine how they are finding these planets Ning. Known Quasars are about 12 billion light years away and are thought to be super massive black holes at the center of galaxies most certainly not a place where we would be checking for planets. If your aware of some government funded study searching for planets around blue giants in other galaxies I encourage you to post a link about it because I think your full of shit and will consider this bullshit statement of yours when considering your future comments.

I agree, that is why I think we really should focus closer to home now. The human imagination is what has given us so much but it may also be what condemns us. Our ability to escape is strangely the same ability that may cause our extinction. If we don't get our heads out of the stars(temporarily) we may not, as a species, live to see them up close.

If the homeless person had weapons and star ships he just might be able to demand a villa. And why pick a dead planet ?
The Moon would be a good starting place . Maybe would could set up a villa for you and Lyx.
Now back to what I wanted to talk about. Did you ever stop and think if we could talk with ....people from a different planet we might learn how to fix some of the problems we have ? That there is a chance not every so called intelligent life form would be as greedy as you see yourself.________________
