If yellowstone were to fully erupt as a supervolcano, I do not think it matters much if you live to the east of the volcano and also west of the appalachian mountains. You will likely die either from being buried in hot ash or suffocation form the dust and gases. If I remember correctly, the area around St Louis, MO was burried around 6 feet in ash last time this erupted. Once it does erupt, the east coast will likely see mass starvation, as the breadbasket that feeds the nation and world will be gone forever. I would think the only safe area in the US would be possible the SE Florida area, and parts of the southwest, as well as the west coast.

Toba would have been comparable... read on:

PS I doubt it is beyond the wit of (wo)man to neuter/de-fang the beast, if we really thought about it. It would probably have to make a mess of the park though; and as the eco loons want to kill us all anyway...

I once looked at a map of how far some of the initial fiery debris would be hurled and determined San Francisco would be on the edge of getting hit. So we may not get all the dust - at least immediately - but flaming rocks as rain could be problematic.
Another aspect to living this close i.e. under 1000 miles, is that when the blast happens we will all be permanently deaf from the tremendous noise. It will be that loud. Not sure where the dividing line for permanent damage vs temporary injury is but any sound that can deafen you from 1000 miles has got to carry quite far. When Krakatoa blew it's sound carried around the globe 7 times before fading out.

Yellowstone gets all the press but a more likely scenario will be another supervolcano closer to me, the Long Valley caldera near Mammoth and Mono Lake. However, I am not loosign any sleep over the possibility of either one going BOOM.

It'll probably blow straight-upward, if it goes. Crust-proportionment will prevent an eruption from not especially exceeding Krakatoa, because the magma-pressure doesn't build-in-a-way that'd create a Baltic Sea-sized crater.

I'll be upset because I never got the chance to see it before she blows her top.

Much speculation has gone on since the knowledge of Yellowstone's past eruptions has been documented with geological research, as well as becoming a media darling for the doomsday crowd. But with highly advanced technology, we can give an accurate picture of the inner workings of this phenomenal work of nature.
To speculate as to when an eruption could or would take place is slim at best even within the boundaries of its historical record of activity having somewhat regulated intervals of 0.8 and 0.6 million years, the math would suggest we have 90,000 years left before its habitual sequence would take place.
But this is also dependent on the surrounding seismic activity continuing in a passive state, such as the continued westward movement of the North American plate and the type of topography carried over the existing hot spot. This would be the present mass combined with existing gravity against the pressure exerted below, and as the crust thickness isn't uniform in depth or density, this can eventually play a huge role in its behaviour. As well as internal pressure increases from below the earths surface.
The science is still young, but its advances are huge compared to say 10 years ago, and with the present day imagery ( 3D) and Sat monitoring ( millimeter ground movement) and thermal, we can see instant changes in the sub surface regions. This above all is the key to being able to forecast an eventual event.

Well its trail so to speak is some 800km west of its present location and the hot spot doesn't move, the plate does.
The north American plate has moved westward over several million years, and will continue to do so, this will place the hot spot further east on a map.
If we could see it in fast forward, in say a million years time, it would be about 500 miles further north east of today's location.Last edited by TC; Aug 1st, 2011 at 11:11 AM.

Quake swarms begin in late 2008-2009... (Dec-Jan)
Then they came again in I think March of 2010...
Now, judging by the time gaps, they should be here again sort of mid-year 2011. (We also have a couple of comets passing very close to Earth and right through the ecliptic beside us on March 11, 2011)
Keep an eye on this map when it starts... There has been 100 feet of crustal uplift over a 75km area in the past couple of years.
So keep an eye on this map when the 2011 one starts, this is the 3rd year in a row, its like a pimple about to pop:

This is his religious sign that the end is near... come on Goldmoon, we have at least 7 years before the end of the world as we know it... yellowstone would kill off almost all of human life on the planet were it to go boom... yellowstone is not going to be the religious armageddon, as it would make the cycle in the book of revelations look weak.

do you think we will be given warning when yellowstone is about to go boom? maybe more earthquake swarms around the area? maybe nothing and it just happens???

Unless we were warned with enough time to flee to the southern hemisphere, I do not think it would matter. Almost all of north america would be destroyed as a result, and the rest that was not initially obliterated would soon be choked in an ash cloud were can only have nightmares about.

The History channel did a documentary about what would happen in the 60 days leading up to it.
I think it was 60 anwyays, might have been 30. I'll look it up, sec.
EDIT:
+ YouTube Video
Not sure if this is the one, I'm at work right now and I have to get back at it.
A couple of us posted it a couple years back when the swarms started..
EDIT:
Ah, at 2:20 it starts talking about the signs that happen just before it erupts, but I don't think this is the video I was talking about.
