She went to the hospital after her brother died because she promised him she would. Mom had been among the last group of people the military ambulance buses had picked up before even they stopped running. After that she nursed her sisters until they died, and then her brother when he got sick until he died to and there was only her left..she didn't know what to do with his body because the trucks had stopped picking dead bodies up too.

Jody didn't know what to do at first..so she went to every house on her street, and didn't find anyone left alive..she didn't want to check anymore homes after that..she had thrown up after the first and second houses; the mask and noseplugs helped some..or maybe she just didn't have anything left to get sick with; she didn't know.

Not knowing seemed to be the set frame of mind she was in..she just stood in the middle of the street for a long time, wishing she had it in her to cry..it scared her that she couldn't cry..she removed the noseplug and mask, then collapsed into a ball in the middle of the street and cried for hours..after that she was thirsty so went to the house and drank some water..bottled water, since the water was no longer running..

Finally, Jody decided to go to the hospital..she got in her car and drove a few blocks until there was a pileup in the middle of the street, then when she turned another direction, there was another line of cars..most with no one in them, but a few had corpses beginning to bloat.

She drove around trying to avoid traffic blocks but she noticed that the closer she got to the hospital, the more the traffic got worse..finally she got out and started to walk, about six blocks from the hospital. She knew some alleys to take that did save time; and almost too soon, she was at the hospital..there were corpses lined up next to a truck that was overflowing..Jody didn't think there had been anything left in her to get sick with, and she was right, but she did have a bad case of dry heaves until she could calm her stomach down enough to keep going..it was then that she saw her first living person since her brother died.

"go away, go away, go away", a tall thin man yelled from the entrance of the hospital waving his arms. "everyone is gone and everyone is dead..everyone is gone and dead", he shouted hysterically, and Jody felt a shiver go up her spine.

Before Jody could do anything, before she could react, before she could say anything, she noticed the man had a gun, and was holding it to his head.."nooo"...she shouted, and then winced as he pulled the trigger. He collapsed on the ground, and Jody didn't want to look but she couldn't not look. His brains were oozing out of his school, and it was then that she realized that she did have something left in her to throw up after all.

She decided when she was done being sick to go into the hospital after all, who knows, maybe the man was wrong..besides, from what she could see there was still power on, and if the power was on, that meant the air conditioning was on, which would give the hospital air circulation making the smell perhaps not too bad. As she went in, she saw a doctor bending over one of the myriad stretchers in the hall, and nearly couldn't believe her eyes at first. She said the first thing that came to her mind, "there's a dead guy outside, he shot himself."

As the man with scrubs on and grey hair turned to her, she had to stifle a gasp. He looked haggard and his eyes were bloodshot. "There's dead people here in the hospital and no one is taking them out anymore. I don't have time to do more than check on those still living." Then he looked at her and his eyes widened, "you're just a kid," he murmured in surprise.

Just a kid. Jody just shook her head..she didn't think she was just a kid at all. "I'm older than I look," she said, almost in protest. The grey haired man gave a ghost of a smile. "well, are you old enough to go to the second floor and see who needs water?" Jody nodded her head. "Good. There is a pallet of water bottles near the elevators, just go to the outpatient surgery, there should be eight people in the halls that are still living. Don't go into the rooms, there isn't anyone living there and there is nothing you will want to see."

Jody turned towards where the elevators were, then turned back and asked the man his name. "I'm Dr. Roberts," he said. "And you are?" "I'm Jody and I'm 14, see, not such a kid at all."

She was more scared than she had ever been in her life, but there were people living here, the tall thin man was wrong, and that was enough for her. She heard the moaning reverbrating off the walls as soon as she stepped off the elevator, and saw the pallet of water bottles right next to it. She picked up a few bottles, and went to the nearest person.
