Welcome to the Trans-Tasman Carbon Market, beginning in 2015. Won't that be fun? -Trading real money on a commodity that literally materialized out of thin air. Except the-man-and-woman on the street, or in the fields, aren't there on the ground-floor backroom.

Julia Gillard's Government 'pledges' to spend 60% of the new revenue to compensate households, whose utility-prices will skyrocket as a result. They'll use the other 40% to 'help' the polluters- oop, industries switch-over to wind or sun or whatever. Sure, they will. It'll be like playing a poker-game under glass, using colored beetles as value-chips... Yeah, the money stays on the table but it's in a state of perpetual dispersal, chaotically wandering from grouping-to-grouping as the business of transacting and governing plays-on.

A carbon-tax is like a cigarette-tax. It becomes 'in the best interest of the Government' for industries to continue emitting CO2. Those kind of taxes never go-away. They become the addicting nugatory narcotic.

One of the industries with the biggest CO2 emissions is healthcare. Think of the electric it takes to power life support, computers, floor cleaners, MRI/CAT machines ect. Then there is the industrial cookers, blood monitors aircon and heating. I could go on.

I think in other industries it will only be the big corps that can afford to pay the extra tax. They are probably rubbing their hands together in glee at the thought of all the small businesses going bust.

No disrespect to Australians but I hope it goes tits up so our own governments see why it's a bad idea.

Never happen, they will ride the carbon tax until collapse and blame it on something else.

This is related indirectly... something similar here on a smaller scale has a new land owner tearing down a dike that was put up decades ago, in order to restore the areas to wetlands, so that he may get "valuable carbon credits" to use "anywhere in the world"- I do not quite know or understand what they mean by that. But basically, because he is doing this, fields and property of other landowners down the way will be subject to flooding during our extensive rainy seasons. One road in particular, that leads to a small neighborhood of about 16 homes, already tends to flood out in the heaviest torrential downpours. Once that dike is destroyed, that road is guaranteed to flood, according to the old timers.
The people in the neighborhood have approached the councils and what-not about this but judging from the gushing articles praising this man for his environmentalism, nobody is listening.
It's beautiful country out there, and there remains extensive wetlands already. I am all for sound environmental practices but this 'carbon credit trading thing' is just another way to tie greed into the appearance of being eco-friendly. If this landowner had real compassion and empathy for the living, he'd not go through with removing the dike.

(I'm actually not sure if he himself will be removing it or if he petitioned the county for it under these credits, but he is the one who will profit from it.)

I really hope his house is the first to flood.
