Hotter Crockpots FYI.
I just learned this...
http://busycooks.about.com/od/crockp...rcrockpots.htm
I was wondering why my ham hocks and beans are boiling on the "Low" setting, I even turned it to "Warm" setting and it was still boiling after fifteen minutes.
I've only had this one for a short while but I remember the last one I used for years could be left for like 16 hours with no fear of killing the roast. This newer one would turn it into beef jerky in 4 hours.
Fortunately, I do most of my cooking on the stovetop. But the WHOLE POINT of the Crockpot was the safety and convenient timing of a "fire and forget" appliance.
They have successfully defeated their own purpose. Fucking commies ruined a solid product because some twat has irritable bowel syndrome.
Too bad they have outlawed cigarettes. I hear they help with the IBS.
UPDATE:
Ok, it seems that my Rival brand Crockpot's "Warm" setting is actually around 185°. I can work with that even though it seems even more dangerous to designate it as a "Warm" setting when it's actually a cooking temp.Last edited by Kiehlroy; Nov 26th, 2011 at 3:02 AM.

Well I suppose it's off to Good Will to purchase Crock Pots from now on, so one can be found without all the Cool New Features.
I have a roaster-type crock pot and luckily there is an actual "warm" setting, as well as a 4 hour, an 8 hour, and a 12 hour setting, with the temps of course being higher or lower depending on the hour you choose."The Alice-in-Wonderland nature of this pronouncement is not lost on me..."

That is why you rarely see them marketed as "Slow Cookers" anymore. But many, if someone is feeling froggy, can be adjusted if taken apart. If it is a analog (knob) and not digital, you can add a $10 dimmer to the power cord. Another trick is to use foil to raise the pot, allowing air into the unit but that is kind of like a real wood smoker. A lot of fiddling to get it right, every time you use it.

I miss my old crockpot. My father gave it to me when he retired and moved to Arkansas. My parents had it since I was like maybe 5? It lasted up until two years ago when I went to wash it and it slipped out of my soapy hands and shattered on the floor. :o( I tried finding a replacement crock for it but it was of an odd size. Everything else is too big around, oval, or too shallow. The crock pot was deeper than any that I have found around town.
We then got a new one that worked twice and died. Bought another one and I've also noticed the temperature seems a little too high in it as I had to keep adding water. I'm terrified to leave it going and leave the house. My old one I could start, go shopping for hours or whatever, come back home and it would be just about read.

One of my favorite crock pot recipes is to take a couple beef roasts, cube it, throw it in the crock pot with some non diluted cream of mushroom soup. Make some mash taters and pour the finished product over the mash taters. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM goood!

Blu, that's why I said, go to some local Goodwill's or the like to search for a decent crock pot. Other than Kiehlroy's basement, a thrift store is the most likely place you'll find one from back-in-the-day.
