Troodons, And The 6 Months Of Darkness

    Disable These Ads!
As the Society Of Vertebrate Paleontology wrapped-up, no background-info on the 'newest' dinosaur species-find in Alaska; Pachyrhinosaurus Perotorum (named for H. Ross Perot), had been finalized... other than it lacked the features of 'Arctic lizards' like Troodons. -Gigantic stereoscopic eyes.

Troodons were essentially raptors. In Southern climes, there's no need for predators to evolve large brains. But in the land of the Midnight Sun, where darkness reigns supreme for half-the-year, brains became large optical processing 'studios', which probably disseminated ultraviolet-light as well. When a brain becomes 'large enough', it naturally begins developing support-regions and secondary-systems, etc. -Becoming human-like, reinforcing the notion that intelligence is nothing more than a food-gathering 'tool'.

-Meaning their eggs became more complicated. Hence; a greater nutritional gourmet item for other predators. So they developed the habit of 'sitting' on the eggs for extended periods of time, unnatural for its species. Their eggs are often found among the remains of other dinosaurs.

The pachyrhinosaurus may've been simply a migratory beast, occasionally tempting fate by remaining on the Alaskan North Slope because of a particularly bounteous egg-gathering season.

all the reptile species - in ancient times and now - are dependent on ultraviolet light for metabolic function, hence well developed pituitary glands and optical centers. it can be speculated that the "ice age" DID NOT kill off the dinosaurs (and clearly finding dinosaur bones of beasts adapted to living in the artic regions supports that) but rather some atmospheric disturbance which resulted in a global reduction of uv exposure to the all the plants and animals on the planet's surface. all animals, and plants, (not just dinosaurs) dependent on a certain level of ultraviolet exposure would have failed, and those who could survive with less exposure as in function metabolically with less uv exposure survived.

modern day examples of the same event are ocean corals, which can only survive and grow within a very tight range of uv exposure in the water. if anything increases or decreases the amout of ultraviolet exposure, the coral dies off.

Well we know the reunion LIP eruptions (Deccan traps) would have pumped unimaginable amounts of gases into the atmosphere during the late Cretaceous over a very long period of time, sufficient enough to reduce UV levels on a massive scale within the 30th north and south latitudes.

Perhaps the conditions that existed further south would have motivated the survival instinct of Pachyrhinosaurus to remain in the darker latitudes, as the southern regions were becoming uninhabitable.

    Interesting thread BTW.

    A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

    A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

    Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs FLOW
How soft your fields, so green
can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war
    We are your overlords

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore!
    Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah...
