A new Wall-Mart may ruin Myan pyramids
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/...m#startcontent
Globalization at its finest.
Low prices, Always.
It might not ruin the pyramids, but I think it may ruin the "aincient" atmosphere while wondering the ruins when a wallmart is close by.

all we need now is for Disney to build up a Disney World Mayan in the middle of the cities.

Its a 1/2 mile away, what's the big deal? They need to start generating more jobs over there anyway. Maybe they'll begin to have pride in their country again and stop running over here to work.

Point well taken, Dutchie!
. . .Though I am always aware of the needs to jobs creation, it is wrong to destroy the timeless beauty that IS by locating Heublien enterprises smack-dab in the middle of monuments that have existed throughout recorded (and previous to) history. They have a place in time that should not be filthied by ceramic, glass and plastic colourful as they may be/it just doesn't "WORK" together, and takes so-much AWAY from the experience of BEING THERE.
. . .It would be better IF these establishments were located MILES away/possibly in mall-areas relegated to the likes of these types of business, in this way, travelers from HERE could still enjoy what they were used to @ home, w/o a photo of the "golden arches' near the pyramid of cheops/(for example). . .
. . .That's just me. I still anguish over the destruction that WWII caused to many great monumental building achievments that will NEVER be seen again.
Sadly, CHANGE is NOT ALWAYS for the BETTER. So-much can be lost. . .

Bah, the Pharohs vandalised each other's pyramids for their own sake, and here we are debating progress. The Pharohs would be for it.

I don't think the pharaohs had progress or jobs in the back of their minds, don't you? And apart from that - they belonged to the times of those pyramids, they did build them, you know...
Is progress really the building of Wal-Marts all over the globe? Would you have Abu Simbel torn down if a factory that employs 2,000 people could be built on the same spot?!?

To flatten Manhatten, or not flatten Manhatten...?
It is possible to move on and advance, while leaving treasures well alone.
In 100 years time they may want to lay waste to New York City, while retaining Brooklyn Bridge or The Statue of Liberty or Grand Central Station or the Gugenheim museum or Central Park or the Chrysler Building or whatever takes their fancy, who knows?
If they keep any of these, would they be a true reflection of how we live today or just a glimpse at some fake reality?

I plan on having graphics carved on my tombstone of middle fingers in hopes of one day making the future peoples who may decide to go into archaeology, finding it and thinking it is a special blessing. Would love to be able to look down on that day after passing and see everyone flippin each other the bird thinking its something positive.
