Would it "break" when it hit shore like normal waves, or would it just be a wall of whitewater surging into shore?

I love in Jacksonville, FLorida, and we have shallow water (less than 100 feet deep) for miles and miles out. Would we be safe(r) than those in say, New York because the wave would break long before it hit shore?

Also, would it be possible to escape the La Palma tsunami by sailing out to sea and having the wave just pass under you?

Erm I don't really know for certain. AFAIK it would act like a normal wave. It'd draw back water before it broke, so maybe miles of the bottom of the sea would be uncovered. By the time it hit the coast it'd be much lower than it had been.

Given enough warning bharv, I believe this may be possible, because with a normal tsunami, when the wave is out in the deep ocean, the surge of the water runs very deep and the water has a very long wavelength, resulting in a wave height of only a few feet and usually passes beneath ships unoticed.. It is only when the wave reaches shallow water that the wave surges upwards to a great height because the water has nowhere else to go. I'm not sure how high the wave would be in deep water in the case of a mega-tsunami though. Hi all, first of all, nice forum, yes I am new.

Well my question of you: what really is the difference betweena tsunami and a tidal wave. I know what a tsnami is, I'm making a project about it for school, my last year, but in al Belgian newspapers (Im Belgian ofcourse)they speak from (litturly translated) "tidal wave killed thousands of people"...concerning the disaster in Asia.
I was thinking: a tidal waves deals with the tides, so the influences of the moon and stuff. A tsunami hasn't got anything to do with tides, so because of the newspapertitles I was messed up. Now am I right, or are all the papers wrong?

pls tell, thank you.

and understand the difference; Unfortunately, those who sometimes broadcast and report the news use these two very different types of 'natural phenomena' as terms that are interchangable, though they are produced in very different ways. "Tidal" is exactly as you say, "Tsunamis" occur when (for instance) a massive earthquake occurs just as recently experienced in Indonesia (or) COULD happen with a meteorite-strike (or) even perhaps with a massive slope of land (like that situation which exists on La Palma) collapses into the ocean, THESE are known as "Tsunami". . .

When two tectonic plates collide, there are just two ways to go. 1: up: you'll end up with a mountain ridge (the Himalayans is the result of India colliding with Asia). 2. Under each other. One plate shoves under the other, resulting in a piece of the seabed suddenly sinking 10, 20 or even 50 feet. The collapse of the seabed is the cause of the tsunami and the resulting wave is EXACTLY as high as the distance the seabed sunk deeper.

A huge chunk of land dropping into the sea will ALWAYS result in waves that are much higher than the (maximum) height of a (mere) 50 feet. These waves can reach heights of up to 4 to 5,000 feet. The wavelengths of these waves are much larger too and can be up to hundreds of miles. Now the waves that result from a landslide (such as the predicted La Palma volcano slide) are called a mega-tsunami.

Tidal waves are NEVER as high as the one we have now seen in SE Asia. Tsunamis resulting from earthquakes are only a fraction of the height of mega-tsunamis.

I call a tsunami something up to 20 metres high. I call a mega-tsunami up to 500 metres high. I call a tidal wave anything above that. Always, i thought that a tidal wave was the biggest and baddest.

It is not based on how large they are. A tsnuami is a wave triggered by an earthquake. Tidal waves are the waves you ride at the local beach. OK...please know your facts man before you say something as dumb as that without even reading what Dutchie posted explaining the difference between the two.

Actually, there are 3 ways. The plates can slide past one another (San Andreas Fault). Not that it makes any difference to this thread.

1. Im more interested in what you call "R.I.P" scenarios. I dont give a toss really about religion and i have posted a few in other sections and also why does it matter?

3. Thanks for the info. As you probably guessed i never really knew this difference between tsunamis and tidal waves. I know that a tsunami is triggered by earthquakes and those related scenarios. I only get 1 geog lesson per week so we don't exactly cover alot. We never have covered tsunamis and tidal waves, closest thing was coasts. We do tsunamis next year.

Excuse cest moi, what you did was try to make me look stupid. You said youve always look it as tidal wave is the largest. Your links say that tsunamis and tidal waves are the same which is completely different from what you said. Plus youve just looked up those links on google to make me look stupid. So you did have no source. R.I.P is any expression. LIke i was saying they were dead...i didnt mean anything religious about it. Actually there used to be a forum called R.I.P Threads or something like that. And I also wrote lol has I weas being sarcastic about it.
