Updates Will Beging As Of Today 3-8-05
SOLAR ECLIPSE:
Mark your calendar. On April 8th, the Moon will glide in front of the Sun producing a total solar eclipse over the Pacific Ocean and a partial eclipse elsewhere. Amateur astronomer Larry Koehn has created a splendid animation of the viewing circumstances for North America.
AURORA WATCH:
The Iditarod is underway in Alaska and--good news--a solar wind stream is blowing past Earth. This means sporadic auroras are likely along the 1112-mile trail from Anchorage to Nome. Mushers, look up!
These small sunspots pose no threat for strong solar flares. Sunspots 739, 741, and 742

3-11-05 Update
CALM SUN:
After a week of dead-quiet, solar activity is slowly increasing with the emergence of several new sunspots. Even so, strong solar flares are not likely this weekend.

3-16-05 Update
AROUND THE BEND:
Something exploded on the sun yesterday. We couldn't see the blast itself because it happened behind the sun's eastern limb. But we could see the hot magnetic cloud it hurled into space. Witness this picture from Gary Honis of Conyngham, Pennsylvania:

John Stetson of Falmouth, Maine, saw it, too: image. The dramatic twisting loop soared some 240,000 km high, 20 times the diameter of Earth.
What exploded? Possibly a sunspot. We'll see soon enough: the sun's rotation should carry the site around the bend and into view later this week.

3-17-05 Update
GREEN SKIES:
Northern spring is almost here; that means flowers, warmer days ... and greener nights. Spring, like autumn, is aurora season. It's a time of year when (for reasons scientists don't completely understand) the interplanetary magnetic field near Earth tilts farther south than usual, fueling geomagnetic storms and auroras.
Sky watcher Lance Parrish photographed these green auroras over Skiland, Alaska, on March 6th. "As I started the exposure," says Parrish, "a rocket was launched from the University of Alaska's Poker Flat Research Range." Scientists there often launch rockets into auroras to study the inner workings of the beautiful lights. This time, unfortunately, the rocket crashed. The good news: auroras (and opportunities to study them) should be plentiful in the weeks ahead.
So keep an eye on the sky, and have a Happy St. Patrick's Day!

3-20-05 Update
SOLAR PROMINENCE:
For days, astronomers have been watching a prominence dance over the sun's eastern limb. Mike Strieber of Newport News, Virginia, took this picture of it on March 18th:
Prominences are tendrils of gas held suspended above the sun's surface by magnetic force-fields. Seen from the side, they're beautiful, filamentary and glowing.
Seen from above, they look completely different. The gas inside a prominence, although glowing hot, is cool compared to the sun beneath it. Prominences seen top-down are, therefore, dark. There are several of these dark prominences in Strieber's image; astronomers call them "filaments."

Update
SOLAR MINIMUM:
Late last year, solar physicists declared that solar minimum is coming. It certainly is. Monthly-averaged sunspot numbers have reached their lowest levels since 1997:
If this trend holds, solar minimum should arrive in 2006 followed by a rapid ascent back to solar maximum in 2010. It is widely believed that sunspots vanish and solar flares stop--completely--during solar minimum. Not so. Occasional big sunspots will unleash flares and spark auroras in 2006, just not so often as in recent years.
SINCE WE ARE NOW AT SOLAR SUNSPOT MINIMUM AN AURORAS WILL BE LOW IM CLOSING THIS THREAD THANKS FOR YOUR VIEWS AS WE ENTER THIS QUIET PERIOD I WILL START A NEW THREAD IF ANY MAJOR CHANGES DEVELOPE.........Dmoney © New Global warming page under construction>>>>http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=34082644

Here's a nice prominence pic...

Prominence observed in 171 Angstroms on May 21, 1998. This solar phenomena can persist for several days and even several months. The dark material in this image has a temperature ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 Kelvin, while the surrounding material has a temperature of about 1 million Kelvin.
