Worthy of Impeachment?
Hi all. It's been quite a while since I've posted, but hopefully some of you old cats are out there.
I saw former U.S. President Clinton on 60 Minutes this weekend and really got to thinking about the GWB Administration. This whole wire-tapping thing has me really on edge. I think what he ordered is illegal and worthy of impeachment. These actions are injust and directly violate the U.S. checks and balances system (three branches, legislative, judicial, and executive, each intended to keep the other in check).
I understand the importance of National Security and think the wire-tapping should have been court ordered. By-passing the judicial and legislative branches in this matter is a serious offense. If there was enough information to warrant the orders, why wasn't there enough information to do it legally?
I'm especially stunned because I feel like it violates the core of conservatism; which GWB is considered a far right-winger. The general philosophy of letting something happen once, then slowly but surely, again and again.
The claims are that the wire taps are "limited". GWB stated that they were conducted only on phone lines from known Al-Qaida numbers originating outside the U.S. So, someone with known Al-Qaida affiliations calls someone in the U.S. and has a conversation, maybe telling that person to contact another person in the U.S. Are we really supposed to believe that they wouldn't tap the line of the person originally called in the U.S. and monitor their calls to other U.S. citizens?
I agree the phone lines should have been tapped, I just don't agree with the method of administration. Isn't it crazy that Clinton was impeached for getting a hummer in the oval office, but GWB isn't yet under the same intense scrutiny? Are GWB's actions worthy of impeachment? Kind of wild if you ask me.

Agreed
Frankly, I think he should have been impeached for getting us into an unnecessary war, but this sort of thing is really over the top. Isn't this security situation exactly what FISA was created for? Have we learned nothing from Nixon?

RE: Worthy of Impeachment?
And that's kind of the point. How can you have one president held to the standard of getting impeached for catching a hummer, but not impeaching one that violated basic constitutional law (regardless of your political stance)?
I mean, c'mon, I've seen some right-wing posts here, so bring it on! Let's do this thing and hash it out!!!!!Last edited by DerekN; Jan 5th, 2006 at 1:43 AM.

In my book, if it's OK to impeach a man for his own, private, sexual exploits than it's more than OK to impeach a moron who thinks he has the power to spy on our own countries citizens without warrants. At least Clinton was getting off on a woman who gave her consent, I bet Bush just sits around and beats off watching some kind of "U.S. Citizen Spy-O-Rama Vision."
