Israel’s Attack on Lebanon
Illegal and
immoral
“Disproportionate” is the term often employed to describe Israel’s attack
on Lebanon. Illegal and immoral are much more accurate.
The UN Charter was established in part, “to save succeeding generations
from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow
to mankind.” The “scourges” and “untold horrors” must have shifted to a realm
of dim, surreal history because today it seems that international law is viewed
as “quaint,” “irrelevant” or with nothing short of unqualified contempt.
Since July 13, Israel has bombed numerous vital civilian infrastructures
within Lebanon; the airport, water supplies, wheat silos, bridges, gas stations,
power stations and roads. Recently, the bombing expanded to refugee camps
in the North. In addition Lebanon’s ports have been blockaded. So far over
100 Lebanese civilians have been killed. Perhaps nothing illustrates the carnage
more than the 15 dead children extracted from a smoldering mini-bus that
was bombed as it attempted to flee the violence.
During the Nuremberg trials wars of aggression were deemed to be the ultimate
war crime because it encapsulated all of the evil that must follow.
Under the auspices of retrieving two captured IDF soldiers by Hezbollah
or the specious claim of “self-defence” Israel has aggressively waged war
on Lebanon. Such actions are forbidden by the Geneva Conventions which provides
that civilians must not be punished for offenses that they personally did
not commit and that collective penalties, intimidation and penalties against
civilian populations are prohibited.
Israel’s scope of attack also contravenes the UN Charter, which says in
part, “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the
threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence
of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the
United Nations.” Indeed, the resounding global opinion has condemned the Israeli
strike on Lebanon as illegal.
Prime Minister Saniora, in an emotional plea to the UN sought intervention
from the Security Council for an “immediate and comprehensive cease-fire,”
and correctly cited Israel’s actions as, “immoral and illegitimate collective
punishment.”
Of the 15 Security Council members only one voted against interceding to
stop the violence against Lebanon – that member was the United States.
I suppose these international laws are of little concern to the Israeli
leaders whose agenda, it seems, must be broader than simply recovering two
captured soldiers.
To identify that broader agenda one need simply look to Israel’s underwriter,
the United States. It is no coincidence that the United States immediately
placed all blame on Iran and Syria. Remember that Iran and Syria have signed
the “Iran-Syria mutual defence pact” and that for sometime Iran has topped
the US list of evil-doers. That the United States ardently wishes to attack
Iran should come as little surprise to most. This crisis threatens to embroil
Syria and then Iran, thus creating a façade of legitimacy for a US
military attack on Iran. It is reviling to contemplate a scenario where such
horrors could be committed to serve American interests abroad.
In the meantime, the world watches, holding its breath, hoping war doesn’t
spread like wildfire through the Middle-East. The UN was designed to prevent
the untold suffering of another world war, and yet, such institutions are
readily dismissed today. More than ever, we stand on the brink – our weapons
have evolved while the thinking of those that weld them has not. It is a recipe
for disaster.
