earth after nuclear war

Life after a nuclear war revealed: Computer models reveal Earth would suffer a 20-year-long winter and worldwide famine

  • Researchers from Colorado studied the effects of nuclear conflict on Earth
  • They used climate models to predict what would become of the planet
  • Their research looked at the detonation of 100 'small' nuclear warheads
  • In their paper they conclude humanity would have been affected for decades
  • There would be worldwide famine, deadly frosts and huge ozone losses
  • The results would be the death of hundreds of millions or billions
  • They hope their research will be an incentive for superpowers to disarm

Suddenly, the sun is eerily quiet: Where did the sunspots go?
The News - Science-Astronomy
July 19, 2014

A few weeks ago it was teeming with sunspots, as you would expect since we are supposed to be in the middle of solar maximum -- the time in the sun's 11-year cycle when it is the most active.

A nearly spotless sun

But now, there is hardly a sunspot in sight. If you look closely at the image above, taken on July 18 by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, you will see a tiny smidge of brown just right of center where a small sunspot appears to be developing. But just one day before, there truly was nothing. It was a totally spotless day.

USGS: Risk of earthquake increased for half of USA
The News - Natural Disasters
July 17, 2014

A new federal earthquake map dials up the shaking hazard just a bit for about half of the United States and lowers it for nearly a quarter of the nation.

The U.S. Geologic Survey updated Thursday its national seismic hazard maps for the first time since 2008, taking into account research from the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami off the Japanese coast and the surprise 2011 Virginia temblor.

Most of the changes are slight. Project chief Mark Petersen said parts of Washington, Oregon, Utah, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming and Tennessee moved into the top two hazard zones.

Parts of 16 states have the highest risk for earthquakes: Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky and South Carolina.

U.S. Plans for Power-Grid Crippling Sun Storm
The News - Science-Astronomy
July 07, 2014

Corporations and the federal government may not be prepared for a severe geomagnetic storm..

U.S. Plans for Power-Grid Crippling Sun Storm

At Delta Air Lines’ (DAL) operations center in Atlanta, meteorologists do more than monitor the usual wind, rain, and snow. They also keep a close eye out for a less common but potentially more dangerous phenomenon known as space weather. The sun’s eruptions can send billions of tons of superheated, electrically charged gas hurtling through the solar system. When these clouds hit the earth’s magnetic field, they can result in geomagnetic storms that disrupt electric power and communications systems.

Tsunami Warning Issued After 8.0 Magnitude Quake Near Alaska
The News - Natural Disasters
June 23, 2014
8.0 Alaska Quake 6-23-2014

A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Alaska after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake was recorded off of Little Sitkin Island.

Tsunami.gov has issued a warning for coastal areas of Alaska, warning that “significant inundation is possible or is already occurring.” Residents of the area were being warned to move inland, or to higher ground.

The quake was originally recorded as an 7.1 but was quickly upgraded to a 8.0. according to the USGS, in a change from the usual pattern where quakes are downgraded.  An 8.0 quake is exponentially stronger.

The extreme depth of the quake at over 70 miles deep prevented a more widespread Pacific-wide tsunami.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center does warn that some coastal areas in Alaska and the Northwest may experience “non-destructive sea level changes” for several hours.

The earthquake was reported at 11:53 a.m. local time.

Author Claims Earthquakes Predictable, Says Next Big Ones This Summer...
The News - Natural Disasters
May 31, 2014
They are pretty rare in our area, but every few years the Pittsburgh area will feel an earthquake that will shake the ground enough to give us a scare. Mainstream science says that earthquakes cannot be predicted, but David Nabhan author of “Earthquake Prediction: Answers in Plain Slight” says otherwise.

Nabhan is a former teacher in California and now lives in Pittsburgh. He became interested in earthquakes while he was the earthquake preparedness coordinator for the school he worked at. He says he noticed every earthquake happened at dusk or dawn.

“I realized this sort of conscience doesn’t happen in science. These dawn and dusk quakes during new and full moons are the paradigm on the west coast,” he said. “All six great quakes that have struck in Los Angeles that have killed people since the 30s, all of them, dawn or dusk [quakes].

How can earthquakes be predicted? Nabhan says that it is the, “conjoined lunar and solar gravitational tides,” are what cause them.

Secret Weapon? Conspiracy Theories Abound as US Military Closes HAARP
The News - Cover-Up-Conspiracy
May 22, 2014

HAARP in Alaska

The U.S. Air Force has notified Congress that it intends to shut down HAARP, a controversial Alaska-based research facility that studies an energetic and active region of the upper atmosphere.

Conspiracy theorists are abuzz about the news, given that HAARP (short for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) has long been the center of wild speculation that the program is designed to control the weather — or worse. In 2010, Venezuelan leader Huge Chavez claimed that HAARP or a program like it triggered the Haiti earthquake.

For the record, the Haitian quake of 2010 was caused by the slippage of a previously unmapped fault along the border of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates.

Bay Area could face cluster of deadly earthquakes
The News - Natural Disasters
May 19, 2014
San Francisco Bay from space

California's San Francisco Bay Area grew into a metropolis during the eerily quiet earthquake gap following its devastating 1906 temblor. Scientists predict a 63 percent chance of another big quake before 2032, but when the shaking starts, it may not be a single "Big One" as in 1906, according to a new study.

Instead, the Bay Area could face a cluster of deadly earthquakes that deliver a series of rapid punches, researchers report today (May 19) in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

The report is another nail in the coffin for the idea that earthquake faults repeat their behaviors in the same way every time. "The historical record is not sacrosanct," said lead study author David Schwartz, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). "It's really clear that the frequency of different earthquake sizes varies over time."

Could Dangerous Underwater Volcano in Caribbean Cause a US Tsunami?
The News - Natural Disasters
May 15, 2014
PHOTO: View from "Hercules," a 5,000-pound submersible used by Robert Ballard and his team.

A team of scientists is exploring the darkest corners of a huge underwater volcano in the Caribbean in hopes of better understanding the mysteries of earthquakes and tsunamis, ultimately saving lives. Kick'em Jenny is a dangerous and active volcano sitting roughly 6,000 feet below the surface of the Caribbean Sea, and located off the coast of the island of Grenada, south of St. Lucia. Robert Ballard, famous for discovering the Titanic 12,000 feet below the surface of the icy North Atlantic in 1985, set his sights on exploring the Kick'em Jenny to study its eruption history and learn more about how underwater volcanoes can pose a threat.

USA Has Supervolcano Contingency Plan
The News - Disaster Preparedness
May 08, 2014

If the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts then millions of U.S. citizens could end up in Brazil, Australia, or Argentina.

That’s according to the South African news website Praag, which said that the African National Congress was offered $10 billion a year for 10 years if it would build temporary housing for Americans in case of an eruption.

The potential eruption of the supervolcano, one of the biggest in the world, has been a hot topic ever since videos of animals allegedly fleeing the area before an earthquake were posted online. Although the veracity of the claims haven’t been backed up, dozens of bloggers and others have been trying to figure out what, if anything, is going on.

EMP: Could it Start the Next War?
The News - War-Draft
May 06, 2014

American military personnel were doubly surprised when the Japanese attacked the United States Navy, drawing us into World War II.

The first surprise was that the Japanese Navy, which was smaller than the U.S. Navy at the time, would attempt such an attack. The second surprise was that there was no follow-on invasion. With that successful an attack, it seemed certain that the Japanese would land troops and take possession of Hawaii. However, that wasn’t their plan.

The Japanese plan was simply to cripple the U. S. Navy, making the United States strategically irrelevant while they went on to complete their conquest. They needed to keep the big kid on the block out of the fight, so that they could go on to complete their other objectives. Their strategy was excellent, as long as it lasted; but as the admiral commanding their invasion stated, it would only keep the United States tied up for six months. Nevertheless, the Japanese Army and Navy had six months of resounding success.

Rare Earthquake Warning Issued for Oklahoma
The News - Natural Disasters
May 05, 2014

Mile for mile, there are almost as many earthquakes rattling Oklahoma as California this year. This major increase in seismic shaking led to a rare earthquake warning today (May 5) from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

In a joint statement, the agencies said the risk of a damaging earthquake — one larger than magnitude 5.0 — has significantly increased in central Oklahoma.

Geologists don't know when or where the state's next big earthquake will strike, nor will they put a number on the increased risk. "We haven't seen this before in Oklahoma, so we had some concerns about putting a specific number on the chances of it," Robert Williams, a research geophysicist with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program in Golden, Colorado, told Live Science. "But we know from other cases around the world that if you have an increasing number of small earthquakes, the chances of a larger one will go up."

Bus-Size Asteroid Buzzes Earth, Comes Closer Than the Moon
The News - Science-Astronomy
May 04, 2014

A small asteroid about the size of a city bus zipped by Earth at a range closer than the moon early Saturday (May 3), but posed no threat to our planet.

The newly discovered asteroid 2014 HL129 came within 186,000 miles (299,338 kilometers) of Earth when it made its closest approach on Saturday morning, which is close enough to pass between the planet and the orbit of the moon. The average distance between the Earth and moon is about 238,855 miles (384,400 km).

You can watch a video animation of asteroid 2014 HL129's orbit around the sun on Space.com. The asteroid is about 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide, according to NASA's Asteroid Watch project based at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. It made its closest approach to Earth at 4:13 a.m. EDT (0813 GMT).

MERS in the United Stated

The first case in the United States of a deadly virus that surfaced in Saudi Arabia in 2012 has been reported in Indiana, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today (May 2).

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, infection was confirmed in a traveler from Saudi Arabia who journeyed from Riyadh to London, England, and then on to Chicago on April 24, according to the CDC. The traveler then boarded a bus from Chicago to Indiana, where the patient is now hospitalized, and in isolation.

"In this interconnected world we live in, we expected MERS-CoV to make its way to the United States," Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said in a statement. "We have been preparing since 2012 for this possibility."

Civilian World Not Ready For EMP Attack
The News - War-Draft
April 22, 2014
EMP attack power grid
The catastrophic effects of an electromagnetic pulse-caused blackout could be preventable, but experts warn the civilian world is still not ready.

Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the technology to avoid disaster from electromagnetic pulses exists, and upgrading the nation’s electrical grid is financially viable. -- “The problem is not the technology,” Pry said. “We know how to protect against it. It’s not the money, it doesn’t cost that much. The problem is the politics. It always seems to be the politics that gets in the way.”
