Will a solar flare hit Earth in 2012?

Well, an analyst on FOX news has stated in clear terms there theoretically should be a solar storm, increased activity, and a potential solar flare that could DRASTICALLY interfere with Earth.

Dr. Michio Kaku was recently on Fox News providing information regarding the possibility of solar storm or flare at the peak of the solar cycle in 2012, and the serious consequences…

“We made a mistake,” Michio Kaku said, when speaking about industry calculations and predictions about solar flares. Kaku believes the cycle will peak around 2012, and possibly play havoc with Earthling gadgets like Blackberries. "The Internet, Fox news, television, cable, satellite TV” could all get “wiped out around 2012″. Scary prospect.

He goes on to suggest that we need to reinforce our satellites, and create redundant power systems. President Obama has already earmarked billions to be spent on the US power grid, but it remains to be seen if it could be completed (or even started) prior to 2012.

Could you imagine what sort of chaos would ensue if the entire power grid somewhere in the US went down.... and stayed down or got fried?
